  1. How hard is it to pull over? on Text-Messaging Behind the Wheel · · Score: 1

I, too, prefer to text over calling for quick messages. But, in the (rare) instances when I feel the need to text while driving, I just pull off the road. At the very least, I wait until I'm at a stop light-- and if the light changes before I can send the message, I toss my phone to the side and proceed to the next place I can pull over. What could possibly be so urgent that it needs to be sent while the vehicle is in motion?

If you are a bit aloof, and difficult...they for the most part won't leave you alone. Speaking as a chick who is generally pretty aloof, this applies to guys as well. I tend to be somewhat apathetic and/or emotionally detached when meeting new people, and I've run into guys who think I'm playing "hard to get" or pursue me just for the "thrill of the hunt." Telling some guys politely that I'm not interested just made them try harder.

Rejection can be a pretty big blow to the ego, and (in my theory) some people are so insecure or narcissistic that they become somewhat obsessive trying to avoid or repair that blow. Also, people in general seem to have a tendency to want what they can't have, to the point where they feel they'll get some sort of emotional gratification out of obtaining the unobtainable.

I get annoyed when people say "just go out and meet someone" like it's so incredibly easy. Some of us do socialize, quite a lot, in the real world, and yet all our preferred-sex friends are either with someone already or engaged or what-have-you.

Well said. I have a pretty large group of friends, and get out quite a bit. However, all of my friends, and their friends' friends, are engaged or already married. Despite generalized "wisdom" from xkcd cartoons about dating pools growing until middle age, I find that most everyone I meet is already in a serious relationship. Instead of hunting for the rare single guy (with whom I might not even be compatible) in an ocean of couples, I've decided to make my life a lot easier by looking in places where I know the men I meet will be single.

That's correct. A lot of people on these sites seem to go on auto-pilot and message any quasi-attractive guy/gal they see, then decide later if that person's personality and interests align with their own.

Not that I blame them-- online dating is an inherently visual medium-- but it does worsen the SNR of my inbox quite a bit.

Having used Match, eHarmony, and Yahoo! personals in the past, I'd have to say that OKCupid! (un: aloriainspring) is the best of the bunch. It doesn't hurt that it's free, either. As a female on these dating sites (zomg I know,) I can attest to the fact that I get more messages than I can go through in a reasonable amount, which makes singling out the people I'd like to talk to pretty difficult. I've even gotten some hurt messages to the tune of "I messaged you twice last week and you never responded, you could at least say no thanks." One simple way of solving this problem is allowing users to set some simple filters to restrict who can send messages directly. If you want to hear from everyone, great. I, for one, don't really want to date someone who lives four hours away from me who is older than my father. Just putting those messages in another folder would be a great help. It would also be great if there was a higher demand for girl nerds (outside of Slashdot, that is.)

I'm a nerdy chick (info. assurance,) and I've met many men and women alike who still think being into "nerdy" things means you fall into the typical negative nerd stereotype. Try showing ALL people that scientists, mathematicians, and engineers don't all sit in their parents' basements eating doritos and obsessing over their interest to the point of having no social life.

Perhaps the gender ratio would be more balanced if the population in general believed that a person can be a techie and still be "cool".

Now, I honestly couldn't care less if my nano has scratches, since it's in a case in my back pocket most of the day and it still does what it is supposed to do. I certainly don't feel like this is a lawsuit-worthy problem, but I can understand why people are upset. When people pay $250 (not a trivial amount of money for most people) for a product that claims to be pocketable, they certainly don't expect to see visible dings and scratches after a week. The glossy black plastic on my year old cell phone looks less scratched than some of my friends' nanos, and I can't say any of them have been abusive to their new toys.

True, if the phone calls are few and far between. If the phones are ringing off the hooks for days, then maybe the congressperson might take notice, but wouldn't a single day of calls be forgotten after weeks of relative silence? I'd think a steady stream of daily calls would be much more memorable, and much less likely leave a negative impression. Remember that the person answering the phone is probably some underpaid staff, and as another poster said, it's bad idea to piss off the congressperson's staff.
