the idea is hardly new - I permanently mounted a pair of 18-volt, 5-watt amorphous solar cells on the rear parcel-shelf to top up the battery when its parked and subsidise the electricity used when running.
the car is a diesel Ford Mondeo (Mercury Mystique in USA) so I don't get any traction power from my solar cells, but it makes starting up a lot easier and does cause a measurable improvement in fuel economy.
However: given that 10 watts of solar power cost me £80 (UK GBP) I have some reservations about whether really useful amounts of power can be generated without dramaticallly increasing the cost of the car.. and with an electric car unlike my old diesel lump, isn't there a risk that the extra weight of solar cells would cancel out the gains ?
Apple are masters at PR. they had the world media reporting on the fact that they intended to announce a new future product. That is sheer class
Unlike the product. I use a Nokia phone as I took a decision a while ago that i would never buy a mobile phone which had no memory card slot - as the ability to remove the memory card from a dead handset can be a godsend in case of hardware damage. Also the upgradeability is a benefit, if my 16gb MicroSD card is too small in a few yeards I can probably get 32gb for it.
iPhone sheep should have done the same. failing to stick to your requirements ends with vendor lockin.
I store my most valuable 20-gb or so online in S3 via JungleDisk (a software client that provides a WebDAV local front-end to S3 and a web-hosted WebDAV and http access)
For the peace of mind, about 4 dollars a month (including upload/download charges) isnt bad. I find it worthwhile especially as my Nokia phone can directly access Jungledisk's online webdav server
I won't drop Jungledisk, but I'll use this too. Multiple redundancy can never be a bad thing except possibly in a marriage.
I have never been to a Best Buy (their first stores in my home country open later this year) but if we assume they are like PCWorld, they probably sell PCs with stuff preinstalled and auto-running (IE, the updater for Realplayer which runs at boot)
their agreements with the software companies would prevent the tune-up techies from removing the autostarts like most of us geeks would, so all they can do is delete temp files, update programs to the latest release (therefore, often, bigger files being autostarted) and defrag
PC Sellers have major conflicts of interest between what the support guys would do given free reign, and what marketing and legal require, contractually.
The price of participation in the peace process seems to be preconditions (accept existence of israel and permanent israeli oversight, lose your ancestral lands forever, lose East Jerusalem,..) that are unacceptable to just about everyone who isnt Israeli.
A peace process with preconditions that favour one party over another is no peace process at all. We Brits found that out in Northern Ireland. It didnt work cos we set preconditions that were unacceptable to our enemies. After a lot of shuffling round, soul-searching, delays, angry speeches, and a backing-down, we've got somewhat further along the line
Well given that they're just down the street from a state with a serious racial prejudice problem and nuclear weapons, I can hardly blame them for that. As far as I''m concerned either both Israel and Iran should have nukes, or neither should. Imbalances in that part of the world usually lead to genocide
Every update on that page gives the Rover's daily power generation in watt-hours. Its plummeting. I found that a fascinating insight into the seasons on an alien planet.
Wouldnt the problem be the inverse of that on earth? IE you need oxygen to do anything useful with methane in the same way you need a flammable or reactive substance to do anything useful with oxygen.. ?
Yes, the Droid has a slide-out one that cant be used comfortably from any angle (I tried it). Its perfectly clear that the parent poster is talking about a phone with a proper keyboard on it, like a Nokia E71 or a Blackberry 8320.
The HTC Salsa seems to fit the bill nicely but wont be out for a while
And to those of us who have been hoping for a new desktop paradigm and some real progress, that came as a big disappointment. Personally my hope for the future of Linux rests on Android, now.
.... if you downloaded the source and made your own version of ChromeOS (PlatinumOS?) that synchs and authenticates against your own server instead of theirs..)
the attempts Apple makes to maintain control of devices they have sold are not dissimilar to the fanaticism shown by some of the more unbalanced elements of the user-base. Beyond the pale.
If their selling strategy for the iPhone was more in line with their competitors, and it could be bought unlocked / without lockdowns on application installation, off-the-shelf as most rivals can, we probably wouldnt need the jailbreaking scene and nor would the virus be spreading this way.
While truth is an absolute defence against the charge of libel, the right of the individual mentioned is to bring a court case (not necessarily to win it - although justice is a tricky thing).
even when in the right it is an unfortunate situation to be the defendant in a civil court case.
In the UK its fairly easy to get sued for making written statements about people unless you are scrupulously accurate, and having looked at the blog in question he's taken a fair few risks..
Probably the traditional British tolerance for ecentricity is the only thing preventing the targets of his jibes from crucifying him in a civil court...
I have been using a Nokia N79 for a few weeks now and I have to say I have yet to find a mobile-computing task it can't do..
Google maps works well with the internal GPS, WiFi and Bluetooth both work flawlessly, I can use it as a mobile 3G hotspot through JoikuSpot, the browser is Webkit based and pretty good (not the best but loads better than Opera Mini on my last phone!)
Its light, easy to use, seems reliable and doesnt suck battery life. Good enough for me... Only obvious downside is it doesnt have the app ecosystem that iPhone has, theres plenty out there but perhaps not the same level of overall polish (although being able to install any app I liike, any way I like, is a massive plus compared to the Apple App Store's rules and regulations.)
I recently bought a smartphone after only ever having semi-dumb java Sony Ericsson handsets, and after ages of looking for a relatively open system which supports full Bluetooth and Wifi and has a hardware keypad instead of a touchscreen , i settled on a Nokia N79 running Symbian S60.
The system might be outshadowed in the media by new Android stuff, iPhones and RIM/Blackberry's media presence, but its actually very good.. install apps directly, jump between diffrent connection types, do anything you like cos just about al the expected features are fully supported....
I might have landed on Symbian by default rather than through choice, but its already impressed me, and another OSS option in the markets never a bad thing.
I think you'll find that the idea of an Amiga article in 2009 was the joke.... or indeed that AmigaOS itself is.
Its about as relevant to us or this site as a new release of the Amstrad CPC464 firmware.... or restarting production of the Zilog Z80. yesterdays technology, amply replaced.
Given that WiFi routers in urban areas with DSL backhaul can take a lot more data than 3G, maybe AT&T shouldnt consider their network as solely GSM-based.... and start getting iPhone and any other WiFi smartphone users to use wireless networks more..

Maybe they have 2 counter-rotating flywheels
Given that the carriers distribute the SIMs for their networks, not hard for them to prevent it !

I removed an expired copy of Kaspersky AV from a Vista laptop yesterday, did a wndows-update and installed free AVG. On rebooting it black-screened.
in that instance another forced reboot brought the system back as normal - I have no explanation

You say 20,000 routers as if it is a lot. In a nation of 300mil people, it is a tiny number.
