2.) playstation creates more revenue for sony than all of its other departments and subsidiaries COMBINED. piracy not only wasn't a concern for sony, they encouraged it because to generate greater hardware sales.
Um, I'm not quite sure you realise how this business works...For the most part Sony actually LOSES money on hardware. They make all their money on licensing, every time someone puts out a playstation game, they have to give Sony a chunk of the proceeds, thus piracy hurts sony, it doesn't help it.
Yeah, that is why I would only pay for CORRECT stuff, people would try to game the system, just like they try to game every other system, eventually(one hopes) the cheaters fall out and the only ones left are the ones who are actually providing a wanted service.
Who said Apple was really just a hardware company? I don't think so -- they are a computer company, and that means hardware and software, at least as far as they're concerned. And the synergy is simply amazing.
Actually, the charge most levied against them here is that they make great software but they make really overpriced hardware, and they should port the software to x86.
I personally disagree(for lots of reasons, their laptops are esp. nice), but everyone has a different viewpoint.
is porn!
Suppose today I want to see shaved asian hardcore action. Now provided that metadata searches are integrated into the OS(like they will be in Tiger), all I need to do is a quick metadata search on my hard drive and boom, there is what I am looking for.
I mean provided there was a decent standard(a porn standards body would rule!) and good regex capabilities built into the OS, I would be willing to pay for porn. I know that there are comments built into the jpeg standard, but there are all sorts of porn file formats, it would be helpful to have a universal standard across them. It saves time, beats trying to search on google and going through a lot of crap just to get to something good. I am a man on the run, I have places to go, I can't be bogged down by my porn. Plus, think of the people that get to catagorize this stuff(well, the fun stuff anyway, not goatse), what an awesome job that would be!
I should probably post AC, but I figure this post is bound to earn me at least one fan and/or freak.
Peter wants a new vcr for Christmas because of what happened to his old one.
They flashback to Peter standing by his tv with a football game on and pushes a button on his vcr, then cops come busting through the door and ask if he has permission from both CBS and the NFL. Peter sheepishly admits that he only has permission from the NFL, and the police then proceed to destroy his VCR.
Truth is stranger than fiction it seems
Seems to me that they are spending more money developing all these technologies than they stand to gain by knocking out piracy. I mean, you average Joe probably isn't going to go to the internet to look for his favorite show that just came out on DVD. Most times I won't either, if it's worth watching, it's worth supporting, esp. if they throw in lots of extras like commentaries and whatnot. Are they worried that people will pirate sportscasts? What is the fun of watching a game that has already been played? Chances are the people trading these would not be buying a copy anyway, so I think they are managing to piss off consumers and lose money simulatneously.
Your ignorance could have easily been cured if you read the article and saw the pictures that show 4 separate monitors for each user.
I think you mean, "pictures that show 4 seperate monitors, one for each user", you way would have 16 monitors:P
I wonder what, if any, heat issues would come from running 4 video cards, and the cpu at relatively full power, in a seemingly normal sized case. I would imagine it would get pretty toasty(or very loud with all the fans running, think of the poor power supply!)
I would be interested to see how they handle it!
get them all to talk Java '
Eh? I'm not sure what you mean by "talk Java"...Java is a programming language, not an inter-device interface. I think what would be preferred we be some type of open communications standard.
Yes, Java runs on a lot of devices, but that doesn't mean that 2 devices running Java will be able to understand eachother....
For me anyway, one of the main draws of having a console over just playing PC games is that it's very easy to get a few friends over and we can all play at the same time(well, the situation has changed slightly with the PC, but very few games take advantage of the fact that you can have 4 usb gamepads plugged in at the same time). We can all gather around in someone's living room, drink, eat pizza, game, and chat and generally have a great time. There is still nothing like seeing the face of your friend after his monkey has bounced off a goal. You don't get that in online games, it's very impersonal to me. You can do voice, but it's just not the same; plus you have to contend with latency, you have to contend with cheaters, you have to contend with immature players.
The only game I will play online is Warcraft, and usually I only do that when I have my laptop at a friends house and we can be on the same team in the same room.
That is why I am glad Nintendo, for the most part, has shyed away from online gaming(glad they didn't totally avoid it though, or else there would be no gamecube linux:)
Obviously, Acclaim was a poorly managed company(who would actually make Olsen twins games!), so it might actually be a good thing if they went under. If they go under, their creditors will probably want to sell any assets that the company has of value, and that may very well include works in progress and trademarks so other, better managed companies can hopefully do some interesting things with all the stuff Acclaim has made over the years.
Elgato makes other, more affordable models that hook up through USB or firewire. While you may not be able to make the highest quality recordings(which would require some cpu power to avoid loss), you can still get decent quality. If you have a powermac g4, you can also look at this, which has the added advantage that you can play console games on it, well you theoretically can with the external devices, but because there is a 1.5 second delay from when the source comes in to when it displays(which doesn't matter much for tv) playing games might not be much fun.
1) India has less income that the Europe and US per capita, but lots more people. If India has a choice, it makes sense for them to go with OS (which requires more labor but less money) than with proprietary solutions such as MS (which require more money but (perhaps?) less labor).
I'm not saying that Windows is better or anything, but your logic is seriously flawed. There are very few jobs were adding a bunch of people actually increases efficiency. In order to actually get things you want to have as few people working on it as possible, less beuracracy, less chance of office politics coming into play, and less time spent delegating things and more time just getting them done. There is not a linear relationship between number of people working on something and how quickly it gets done.
As the old addage goes, too many cooks spoil the broth.

Apple Delays New iMac
·
· Score: 1
The people at WWDC (or paying attention to news about it) aren't generally an iMac market. It was a better place to focus on Tiger.
Yeah, but they will have to DEVELOP for the iMacs, so I think they would be interested. I mean, giving the consumer desktop more power would allow developers some more room to create interesting things. It's obviously more relevant than Myst 4 which was shown at the keynote
I personally think that Steve wanted to show it at the WWDC, but because of supply shortages or prototype problems or something could not. There were some things that I think had to be stretched out to make up for the lack of an iMac to display(Myst 4, the huge amount of time they took to show off the new graphics thing in Tiger). But based on Steve's searches for spotlight(birthday, iMac, Paris) I would be willing to bet that he is going to unveil it at the Mac even in Paris(cannot remember it's name)
Knoppix
You can use linux disk partitioning tools to achieve the same thing, it's bootable off a cd without having to install anything, and well, it beats windows!
it is interesting that you cannot buy a G5 at apple's online store in China, but you can buy it in Japan and Germany. It's not like Apple doesn't ship it's latest products there either, you can buy the latest eMac and powerbook revisions, but no G5...
Think about all the random stuff you could put out on that playlist. The Girl with the Vagina Made of Glass comes to mind(great song btw).
And we can only imagine what would happen if the GNAA got to control the playlist....
Riiiiiiight, because instead of running, bitching about the system on/. will make all those problems go away won't they?
(since you are the one that is trolling while calling me a troll, I will give you a free lesson)
What about the Green Party
Or the reform party(they don't have a nice little list of people in offices like the greens on their website), or the Southern Seperation party if that is your thing.
Yeah, it's not going to be easy, but, correct me if I am mistaken, it doesn't say in the constitution that you are guarenteed a right to win an elected office.
Oh I'm sorry, what am I thinking, doing stuff, I'll just go back to complaining on slashdot, that will solve everything!
Sorry, but so many jokes about them stopping the "Pittsburgh Pirates" at the gate just entered my head when I read this.

All macs are capable of running Linux, check out yellowdog or debian, they have mac distros.
Yeah, that is why I would only pay for CORRECT stuff, people would try to game the system, just like they try to game every other system, eventually(one hopes) the cheaters fall out and the only ones left are the ones who are actually providing a wanted service.
If your pc is fast(and i mean fast!) you could mess around with it in pear pc, though I dunno how stable/responsive it would be...

That obvious huh?
I guess even moreso in that I watch but, have yet to participate in it.

Heh, well, technically from 1910 to 1945 Korea was a Japanese colony...
Now that would be the ultimate in very difficult to implement pointlessness!
