"The study compared two teams of experienced IT administrators running Windows Server 2000 and Novell SUSE Enterprise Linux 8, then monitored their progress as they upgraded to Windows Server 2003 and Novell SUSE Enterprise Linux 9."
But the PDF says:
"Specifically, for the database server role, we considered three configurations; Microsoft
SQL Server 2000 on Windows Server 2003, Oracle 10g on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3
and MySQL on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3. In order to produce a meaningful
comparison of platforms, the systems studied were manually installed and their
configurations were verified."
Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 is the only Linux distribution listed in the PDF. Also the fact that "the systems studied were manually installed" is probably why the upgrade was problematic. If you want your upgrade to be easy, install from the distribution, not manually. I also wonder why they did not test MySQL and Oracle 10g on windows. There are windows versions of these software packages. When you are comparing systems running different software, you are not just doing an OS comparison. You are also comparing the software packages. They might just as well have compared Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 running Oracle 10g to Windows Server 2003 running Microsoft Access 2003.
"I guess what I'm really asking is how do you live with yourself knowing you're primarily responsible for continuing the habits of poor lonely nerds who cry themselves to sleep at night clutching a picture of Princess Leia and moaning like a wookie?"
D00d! They were doing that long before SWG came along. At least now they have something to look forward to. Sure it is all virtual. But these poor wretches were never going to have more than a virtual life anyway.
Same here. I really do not understand staements like "This is no longer the company I founded 13 years ago." Of course it isn't. It is Novel. Novel is an old corporation with a well known corporate culture. Mantel knew that when he sold the company. If he had any illusions, he was just deluding himself. I think the most telling quote in the article is "I'm very confident the Novell management will find a competent successor very quickly. After all, there are lots of extremely skilled people over there in the Ximian division." Sounds to me like corporate infighting and Mantel lost.
"The downside, piracy, websites that spew hate and all the rest.
I'm just curious if some group on the UN level asserts much stronger control over the net, it is such an obvious place to control things, could see a ton of impacts."
This is probably flame bait, but, considering how little control the UN has over its member nations and operatives, I suspect that the Internet under UN control would have more piracy, websites that spew hate and all the rest, not less.
"The brand "Linux" should stand for an entire operating system not just a kernel. There should be only one true Linux and perhaps many derivatives that should have their own brand and name."
I am not sure I agree with this. It is almost as if the author does not understand Linux distributions, but I see an interesting idea here. I think the wider adoption of the Linux Standard Base (LSB) would improve user experiences. It would make installing and compiling software that is not part of your distribution much easier. Since Linus owns the trademark for Linux, he could make LSB compliance required for the use of the Linux trademark. This would not force distributions to comply, but it would encourage more of them to. Also it would make it easier for end users, because then you would know that if it said Linux, it would be LSB compliant.
I really understand about your online identity. I have two names that I use online. One is for gaming and the other is for everything else. I have been online using them since '91 and used them prior to that on BBS's. When I log into a new system, they are the first names I try to choose. In fact my name here is the one I use 'every where else.' If you google my name you find me. I have email addresses on several major mail servers just to keep other people from using that name. I am VERY attached to my names and do not want anyone else using them. Interestingly my gaming name, Babba Lou, would break WoW naming policy as well since Babba could be considered an honorific. Anyway, just my two cents.
"I promise you there are more than a few Netware shops out there who continue to be Netware shops primarly because of Groupwise."
Yeah I always liked groupwise. In fact Novell just sent me a demo copy of Groupwise for Linux. I have been looking forward to playing with it next time I am home.

"I was wondering if any of you could name other Internet services that predate the web and still exist today."
OK Here is (I think) the complete list from the article:
Task: Add an entry in the addressbook
Task: Make an account on this computer for your friend
Task: Add a birthday reminder to the calendar
Task: Change the wallpaper
Task: Change the fonts on the computer
Task: Please correct your computer's date/time
Task: Create a playlist
Task: Crop the photo of the cat
Task: Email "A Tale of Two Cities" to arthur@ximian.com
Task: Upload your photos to your website
Task: Figure out if the computer is online
Task: Find all the music by Bach
Task: Edit the note that you made for yourself
Task: Find out if the computer is online
Task: Find the document "A Tale of Two Cities" on the computer
Task: See if you have enough free disk space for a new game
Task: Import the photos from the camera to the computer
Task: Please login to the computer
Task: Make the photo of the car brighter
Task: Make a shortcut on the desktop for the addressbook program
Task: Make a new photo tag
Task: Make a note for yourself
Task: Play the selected song
Task: Remove some songs from the playlist
Task: Please rotate the photo of the cat
Task: Assign the "People" tag to all photos with people in them
Task: Turn the volume down
Task: Turn off the login music
I found it interesting that eight out of twelve succesfully completed the "Find out if the computer is online" task. I also wonder if these users could complete all these tasks in Widows.
" It's right for Microsoft to be interested in security. It's wrong for them to attempt to profit from it."
The problem is if they give it away. If Microsoft begins giving away their security suite, then Symantec will probably go the way of Stac Electronics and Netscape.
"Something needs to be done. Even with the source, half the time I have to make all sorts of include changes."
I will probably get modded flamebait, but I agree.
I just went throught the process of adding Bugzilla to my installation of Fedora Core 3. I run Fedora because that is the default Linux installed by my provider and anything else would more than double my costs. I just checked the LSB Certified Distribution List, and sure enough Fedora is not on it. I tried upgrading my system using Yum, but the versions installed with Yum were not current enough for my purposes. Every piece of source I had to download to get Bugzilla installed had to be configured with a switch pointing to a non-standard install directory.
This really surprised me, because the LSB has been around for a long time. I thought all major distributions had become compliant several releases ago. I especially expected Fedora, which many people consider the standard for Linux, to be compliant.
Well after visiting their web site and not finding any Linux drivers for their existing cards, and not even any mention of Linux nywhere on their site, I wouldn't hold my breath.
" The article says that the study shows Linux to be cheaper than either Microsoft or Sun. Gee, I wonder why AIX wasn't included as a Unix variant?"
I am a big Linux advocate, but I feel about this study the same as I do about the Microsoft studies saying Windose TCO is lower than Linux. IBM has a vested interest in Linux adoption so of course any study they publish is going to be pro-Linux.
You know it always annoys me when I see these two words confused. As I was taught, a psychopath cannot hide his mental illness. A psychopath is the person who crashes into McDonalds and starts shooting. Sociopaths are serial killers that manage to hide their predilections for years without getting caught.

Yeah tell me about it. There is a huge nostalgia factor here. I wrote my first program on an Atari 800. I was 15 at the time.
I think I'll wait until the full release is available via online update.

I was wondering the same thing about Pella Windows. When is Microsoft going to yank their name?

"The popular open source Apache Web browser takes a similar approach to features."
Does it support tabbed browsing?
The only reason Oracle would buy Microsoft is to dismantle it.
