Another Taikonaut Launch This Week
JPThorne writes "BBC Online is reporting that China will launch a manned space mission sometime between Wednesday and Sunday of this week. Two as yet unnamed Chinese Astronauts will undertake the mission." From the article: "The launch comes almost exactly two years after China's first manned space flight, which made astronaut Yang Liwei a national hero. Unlike the last mission, Xinhua said a live broadcast of the launch would be provided to foreign media. Analysts say the fact the authorities are being more open about this launch may indicate that they are more confident of its success. "

Meanwhile, back in the US, the Republicans claim they want to take us back to space but aren't willing to put their money where their mouth is (though they're quite happy to cut funding for robotic exploration in order to free up the funds!), the Democrats seem to be opposing space exploration on the grounds that the Republicans are for it, and NASA's manned space division doesn't seem to be able to get its act together enough to actually give us a safer orbiter, never mind something that can take us to the Moon or Mars.
Dontcha love partisan politics?
I guess this means that since China can now afford to send (two) ships into space, it doesn't need any more Foreign Aid from the EU, Japan or the US.
With all that pirated NASA software, how hard could it be?
No, but I do love the Pen.is Bird
Meanwhile, back in the US, the Republicans claim they want to take us back to space but aren't willing to put their money where their mouth is
Meanwhile, Democrats cry "foul" on the 104 billion they DID allocate, stating that the money should be used for social programs.
Dontcha love partisan politics?
Doncha love politics?
Taikonaut? Cosmonaut?
Just call them Astro-men.
That would be US Government, Russian government and private enterprise (Bert Rutan's company). So that would make China the fourth.
Q: What is the difference between the Chinese and US space programs.
A: In China tang in an astronaut.
Insert Generic Sig Here:
The whole reason he wants to go back to the moon is so Red China can't control all the green cheese.
The Uncoveror: It's the real news.
Having been back from China, I can tell you that the government is just a paper tiger when it comes to "mankind" missions. This is just a PR move to jumpstart the publics love of the government. Fact is, the people there (at least in Shanghai) see everything as a "government issue" regardless if it's good or bad. I bet that China will land man on the moon a few times and never go back. Basically, it's pure politics and not science. ...been there, done that.
Life is not for the lazy.
Here is one thing I don't understand. Why doesn't NASA cooperate with other countries in exploration, technology etc? Why not get Russia, China and even India involved in design a new space orbiter? When they share costs and brain power wouldn't it be cheaper and faster? What will Democrats have to complain at that point. This lone ranger philosophy has got to stop. It is only hindering us.
Then we will have a real AUSTRONAUT
Can we please decide on a single term for those persons who travel into space? Must we have a unique term for every national space program? Cosmonaut, Astronaut, Taikonaut. Its one thing for speakers of a language to refer to an equivalent English term by their own unique word, but why must we (we being English speakers) adopt a different term? Its silly. We generally do not do this for any other nouns. We don't call a Russian sailor by the Anglicized Russian term for sailer, do we? Sorry. Pet peeve.
Trolls: The high-tech version of those morons that scrawl obscenities in public bathrooms.
Meanwhile, back in Pakistan they wait for aid while China and the US debate who will spend the most resources to control the totally barren lifeless peice of junk orbiting the earth.
their confidence should come from the superior technology they are able to use in all phases of preparation, testing, creation, and launch. Imagine the balls it took to do this in the 60s with the very new rocket technology and very little computing power.
Why is China being so secretive like the bush administration about the launch time?
the ISS has components from many different countries.. ever heard of the russians?
the robotic arm on the shuttle is Canadian
Yang Liwei is a very lucky man.
:)
Rumor has it that the freeze-dried, astronaut kung pao chicken is to die for.
From the Article:
Shenzhou VI, like Shenzhou V, is based on Russia's Soyuz spacecraft, a model developed in the late 1960s.
TFA (The F-ing Article) reads as if they are working with 1960-s era technology. I would suggest that this is biased reporting based on a premise that the Chinese technology is from the 1960's and they're using it now because that's the best they can do.
Instead, I would suggest that they are probably using a derivative of the Soyuz technology updated with modern materials and techniques. The U.S. is using Delta launch vehicles which had their roots in the 1960's as well, but we don't advertise that a rocket was a "Delta-IV, a model developed in the early 1960's" because most of the innards have been updated and redesigned with techniques and materials that are the latest in rocket design.
The Chinese program may not use as advanced a technology as the U.S. Delta and E.U.'s Ariane programs, but that doesn't mean the rocket was designed in the 1960's and they're stuck still using that level of ability.
Space reporting should not be politically biased.

You seem resigned to the fact that the only way into Space in the future is via the benevolence of government. Have you been reading too many Chinese press releases?
I hope the powerful Rethuglicans apply their principles and continue to deregulate space access, paving the way for municipal spaceports and ventures like Armadillo and Space Ship One.
You are right that the democrats are essentially a non-player in the space faring aspirations of America.
The problematic word is "share". It probably sounds a bit too socialist, if not downright communist, for many American politicians to accept.
Besides, such cooperation is quite easily shot down with accusations of such activities being "dangerous to national security".

From a technical aspect China is in somewhere between Gemini and Apollo. An individual with enough money could do the same thing. The reality of this endeavor does not really justify any fears of space/technology domination by China.
It good, however, for the general public to see this kind of headline. It reminds them that space exists and that the U.S. doesn't run the show up there anymore. Hopefully this leads to funding...
Thank you Dave Raggett
Because each wants to colonise space on their own terms.
A spokesman for the Chinese space program had this to say about a trip to the moon.
How ya like dat?
If the Chinese go to the moon, I don't think it will be just a publicity stunt-I expect they'll develop a real economic presence there. Stuff like a Lunar space elevator could be a highly profitable enterprise.
This may be what is needed to show just how short-sighted the folks running the US these days really are.
Whats amazing is how long it took, since China has had a rocketry program since the 1950s, and Beijing fired its first satellite into orbit in 1970.
+1 funny, -2 overrated. Life isn't fair.
Two as yet unnamed Chinese Astronauts will undertake the mission.
I guess this depends on which two they can pull away from the chat rooms and online games.
If a baby duck is a "duckling," why would anyone want to eat "dumplings?"
just a PR move to jumpstart the publics love of the government ... land man on the moon a few times and never go back ... pure politics and not science.
Amazing how even governments with philosophies as different as the US and China play the space card the same. Manned spaceflight is about giving the public something to cheer for - a human face on a program that is most efficiently done with robots loaded with tools that the average person doesn't understand.
But this Rottweiler not only is snarling and frothing at the mouth; it also went to Harvard.
So... They are not going to really launch two people into space? All talk, no do? Oooooo Kayyyyyyy....
You sound jealous... I suppose all the maiming of Nazis in WWII was just more money down the shitter...
But you hate me and my country for winning that fight. You hate to see us flex our muscles, even when we do so righteously, because your own muscles are flacid.
Wake up, history shows us that disdain for weapons leads to suffering. You think 6 billion people will just agree to be nice and sing kum-bai-yah? Thats the stuff that mental disorders are made of.
Also reported on the People's Daily Online. Including an interesting story about how they aren't experimenting with "space mutation breeding".
Aww, and I was so looking forward to the catchphrases that would've spawned.
Like Teddy with an elephant gun.
The funding is there, it just goes towards funding the killing and maiming of innocent civilians in countries like Afghanistan and Iraq.
Right, because we all know the innocent civilians are the primary targets.
Only on Slashdot does this get modded as insightful rather than flamebait.
Where have you been?
" On October 15, 2003 Yang Liwei became China's first astronaut on the Shenzhou 5 spacecraft."
"Flight 15P of SpaceShipOne was the first privately-funded human spaceflight. It took place on June 21, 2004."
From the Wikipedia article, needless to say.
Spot the democrat! ROFL.....
history also shows that weapons in the hands of the arrogant leads to tyranny and destruction
the USA was founded on the principles you degenerate, btw.
The US has enough problems of its own to take care of. Perhaps you have not noticed, but New Orleans is still a mess (though getting better it will take years to recover). Sure it would be nice to help everyone in trouble, but there is only so much that can be done - even when you are as large in the world as the US is, your abilities are limited.
I bet that China will land man on the moon a few times and never go back. Basically, it's pure politics and not science. ...been there, done that.
Just like the US...
If we'd been interested in going to the moon for the sake of exploration and science instead of just getting there before the Russians did, we'd probably still be there.
Only Democrats care about victims of a natrual disaster?
Looks like someome just shot himself in the foot!
Going to the Moon may be just a PR stunt (it pretty much was when the US did it), but the technologies and expertise gained from that are enormous, and China is taking its rightful place as the third space power. It's a few decades behind, but moving fast, and say what you like, the Kremlin and the White House will very much be watching when a Taikonaut steps off the land on to the surface of the Moon.

And our system of democracy has built in mechanisms to prevent tyrany... its called voting and impeachment.
So, if you studied much history, you would find it highly unusual for democracies to go to war with one another...
And the track record of the USA is outstanding. Other people who try to argue that the USA is evil, cannot demonstrate with specific examples other nations that have a better model, a more successful model, a model that has less suffering and more freedom built into its foreign policy.
Have a nice day.
We're usually willing to collaborate, but only as the senior partner. The Canadian arm on the mostly-domestic shuttle, the ESA's Huygens probe on the Cassini spacecraft, etc.
Meanwhile, back in Pakistan they wait for aid while China and the US debate who will spend the most resources to control the totally barren lifeless peice of junk orbiting the earth. anyone waiting for aid should get up off their asses and make their life better for themselves. One day all these African countries are going to stop fighting themselves and start actually producing products and then Indonesia and Mexico will be in real trouble... :)
Speaking of Nazis, don't forget that the American space program was the work of Nazis captured during WWII. The Saturn V rocket was designed under the direction of Wernher von Braun, you know.

But what saddens me most out of your post is that it shows a lack of vision. The universe is a place of nearly unlimited promise. Our solar system alone holds innumerable wonders. Why shouldn't we allocate the resources to go to the Moon, Mars and beyond? The side benefits that have come out of the space program in material technologies, medicine, computers and hell, even cookware, have been enormous. That's the brilliance of such a massive R&D program, all sorts of benefits accrue. Develop some new material that can protect astronauts from months in interplanetary space from radiation, and by golly, maybe you've got a way of making smaller, safer nuclear reactors. The data processing requirements may lead to better encryption algorithms, more reliable communications protocols and smaller, faster and more intelligent computers.

Like the rest of the world has realized for at least five years now, your supposed "system of democracy" has failed. That's why you're mired in Iraq and Afghanistan. That's why there was rampant voting fraud during your last two elections. You speak of democracy, yet you know nothing of it.

That is only if your definition of tyranny matches that the crowd voting. If my value system is different (i.e. freedom of speech that is constantly being attacked by right wingers and left wingers alike, freedom from foreign interference, etc) then you have defacto tyranny.
Democracy may promote stability is many instances (in many others they degenerate and fail), but the authoritarianism is simply shifted to the collective consciousness upon itself.
And the track record of the USA is outstanding. Other people who try to argue that the USA is evil, cannot demonstrate with specific examples other nations that have a better model, a more successful model, a model that has less suffering and more freedom built into its foreign policy.
I wasn't defending the track record of other countries. As someone in the USA, I believe we can do better. Just becuase we weren't AS BAD as Saddam Hussein was towards his people does not mean we can simply live to a standard such as ours that encourages constant terrorism against innocents.

Hmm, but really, what have we got from all the space research investment put into so far?
BZZZZ. Wrong! Another loser!
-America's congress (House of Representatives + Senate) authorized the President to invade Iraq and Afghanistan.
-America's courts (Supreme) has overseen the process.
-America's people have voted and will vote again in 2006 and again in 2008 and again in 2010.
So, which constitution do you have in your country? Care to name your country? I have a really big suspicion that your country sucks!
People like you will throw out any conspiracy theory and lap it up just to be fucktards.

-A court with a Prosecutor / Judge / Grand Jury
-A peer-reviewed science team (like forensic scientists)
-An open debate among the american people
See you later, fucktard.
IMO when it comes to manned missions to the moon or Mars, the science and technology part is easy compared to the political part, even if a single nation is involved.
IOW, we're technologically capable, just not politically capable/inclined.
No, manned space is not for the public. Manned spaceflight is government spending to keep sectors of the aerospace industry alive and to provide dollars to engineers and to further materials and rocket science.
Its similar to the trickle system of continously building large warships, fighters and rebuilding tanks, the Federal Government has to keep spending money to keep those sectors afloat for when they are really needed like from a protracted war.
Like I said, your system failed. The rest of the world knows it. Perhaps you'll wake up to the truth someday, instead of hiding in your little fantasy world.

Now, go back to your hole!
The problematic word is "share". It probably sounds a bit too socialist, if not downright communist, for many American politicians to accept.

The British have been sharing their most advanced tech for a good century now
'Chinese officials say they want to land an unmanned probe on the moon by 2010, and also build a space station.'
this reminded me of the quote:
"That's no moon, its a space station."
Many insights to the moon could be gained from a new and sophistacated moon probe, I am not as sure about the benefits of the space station other than for scientific experiments and spacedocking practice.
The question now is: Should the US, Russia, EU, Japan and China all be obligated to share individual research and information acquired from each mission in the hopes to further the overall objective of creating reliable space travel?
Also, once some country lands on the moon, can they just claim it as territory and start building on it in any fashion?

BWAHAHAHAHAHA!!!
Why doesn't NASA cooperate with other countries in exploration, technology etc?
To some degree they do. The ISS is funded and developed by multiple countries. The Cassini-Huygens probe was a co-operation between NASA and the ESA.
Why not get Russia, China and even India involved in design a new space orbiter? When they share costs and brain power wouldn't it be cheaper and faster?
It likely would be cheaper, but the problem is how politicians view federal dollars being spent. If money isn't spent in someones district, it might as well not matter. Who's going to build the orbiter? Who gets the money? The US wouldn't be too happy about pumping a big chunk of money for manned space exploration into another country. Manned space exploration is mostly about pork and not about science.
AccountKiller
If we'd been interested in going to the moon for the sake of exploration and science instead of just getting there before the Russians did, we'd probably still be there.
Or maybe we'd never have gotten there at all. Politicians aren't known for spending money for the sake of exploration and science, but since it was billed as a must to beat the damn dirty Reds to the moon, no cost was considered too high.
Personally I think it also had a lot to do with the fact of JFK being assassinated. Going to the moon was a pet project of his, and his popularity after his assassination was so high that killing the project became unthinkable.
All movements for social change begin as missions, evolve into businesses, and end up as rackets.
Nazis in WWII
Wow, we see the Nazi Card already? I didn't even see trumps break!
What a horseload of false equivalency we have here - comparing America's current actions to those in WWII (a war which it mostly sat out while Nazi Germany rolled over Europe, and only joined after Japan forced our hand, by the way). Germany, a nation with several million men in its armed forces and among the best, if not the best, technology in the world, plus a massive industrial base. Compared to Iraqi insurgents, at 30-60k strong, whose best weapon is a large ball of explosives triggered by a cell phone. A war in which most of the world supported the (belated) US response, compared to one in which most of the world opposes the preemptive US response. Seriously, give me a
Back on topic, look at China: even with its human rights violations and state censorship, the world *still* views them as a more suitable world leader than America. So, whether you cheer for them or not, realize that the rest of the world is (at least in comparison to America). The rest of the world views our elective wars against small groups on trumped up evidence that lead to suffering for tens of millions and spread instability, creating breeding grounds for terrorists, as an atrocity, plus our willingness to toss aside human rights abroad because of a view of absolute self-righteousness, in addition to our disdain for international cooperation to be a much greater threat to world peace.
Like it or not, that is how we're viewed here, and it's a strong enough view that even China looks better by comparison to the rest of the world.

Excuse me? When millions of American children recite the pledge of allegiance, do they say: "I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the DEMOCRACY for which it stands."? I think not.
As to your comment that democracies don't usually go to war with each other: I bet you can't name one country before the past 200 years that was a democracy.
And in case you haven't noticed, the U.S is in serious financial trouble, with a humongous deficit and a very weak economy.
Oh sure, the U.S used to be a great country. That was before some nuts started making it into a democracy. Now look where it is. Then they got a great idea, "Hey, lets go spread democracy to the whole world.". Mr. Bush started with Iraq, look at how successful that has been.
Have a nice day to you too.
Go back to sleep, douchebag.
Your (chest thump) "best country in the world" is like being the "prettiest waitress at Dennys".
A lot. But there is a difference now. When Russia and US first went to space, the discoveries and engineering feats were unknown at the time. Now days, if China or India are after the research, they can just buy copies of the reports from both Russia and US now.
Why tread over the same tracks?
Life is not for the lazy.
Benevolence, nothing. I'm talking about cold, hard cash. It takes a whole heap of money to get anywhere near the moon, and it's going to take more people with Bill Gates-level fortunes willing to sink a lot of money into a project that will take years to realize any kind of return on investment. I'm sure in a decade we (as in Earth) will have a thriving commercial space program in low earth orbit (like the zillions of commercial satellites we have already). But the resources to go to the Moon or Mars? I don't see the business world going there anytime soon.
Hmm, but really, what have we got from all the space research investment put into so far?
Dude, it's called a military-industrial complex.
If the world is just a Denny's, then I'd like to see you go to the IHOP across town, biotch...
What is the point of colonizing other planets when we are struggling to survive on a planet we are designed to live on? When you can't even properly distribute food and water and shelter to people on earth, what makes you think we can do it across planets? I have plenty of vision, but all the problems we face on earth arn't going to suddenly disappear because we can travel space.
Again, you think we are in financial trouble??!?!?!?!?
11 trillion GDP. YEAH! How troubling!!!!! ROFL ROFL ROFL
We can sell FORT KNOX in a flash for how much cash??!?!??! What do the FORT KNOX of the EU look like? Japans Fort KNOX? China's? Who has more gold?
We could sell Alaska drilling rights for how much cash?!?!?! How about the whole state?
And our real-estate. Baby, we gots the real estate. Sea to shining sea. We could sell 1 billion acres of national forest and be rich beyond our wildest dreams.
The fact is, we've been playing this game with one hand tied behind our back. If you want us to unload both barrels on the world, we will be richer than you can ever fathom.
America, as a poor country. Thats like **Batshit** levels of crazy...
Dude, this is oversimplification. US (and Russia) spent billions if not trillions of dollars into space research, NASA will just handover the blueprint for a fee? Considering some of these research are confidental and maybe related to security to their country.
And cutting space exploration isn't going to make those problems disappear either. The reality is that many of those problems are either the result of political instability or environmental problems. Space travel at least offers the promise of innovations, and perhaps broadening our collective horizons, and generally, those are what contribute to the well being of humanity.
The world's burning. Moped Jesus spotted on I50. Details at 11.
Agreed, the moon is no hop-skip-jump from low-earth orbit. But just a few innovations can lead to explosive growth. 10 years for commercial moon trips is too soon. 20 years is not.
According to http://www.oosa.unvienna.org/treat/ost/ost.html/, they can't. Then again, just wait until someone finds some energy source on the moon or other useful raw material. Then watch the gold rush.
Those who can, do. Those who can't, sue.
if you studied much history, you would find it highly unusual for democracies to go to war with one another...
That's not such a simple issue. There's correlation, but there's also correlation between peace and wealth of nations, their historic geographic isolation from one another, the rise of the cold war's stabilizing influence during the peak period of democritization, and a number of factors, suggesting that the correlation is not the causation.
track record of the USA is astrounding
On what count?
But this Rottweiler not only is snarling and frothing at the mouth; it also went to Harvard.
Wanna bet China reaches the moon before we go back
Yes, I would. If China succeeds in there next mission they will equal the result of Gemini 4. That puts them only 40 years behind. Remember that they got a jump start too by buying Russion Soyuz spacecraft. Their booster is similar to a Proton. When China produces a real innovation I'll take notice. In the meantime they are also rans.
Meanwhile, back in the US, the Republicans claim they want to take us back to space but aren't willing to put their money where their mouth is (though they're quite happy to cut funding for robotic exploration in order to free up the funds!)
What??? NASA's budget continues to grow in real terms. Robotic exploration of the solar system has never been in better shape. You have the wildly successful Cassini. We have two excellent orbiters circling Mars with a 3rd more powerful one on the way. The Mars rovers are arguably the most successful robotic exploration mission in history! There is another huge rover headed there in 2009, a new Lunar Orbiter... What are you talking about?
and NASA's manned space division doesn't seem to be able to get its act together enough to actually give us a safer orbiter, never mind something that can take us to the Moon or Mars.
NASA has proposed a very workable and exciting exploration plan with the CEV. The major launch components are already there. Where is the risk in its design? NASA kept the wheels on the shuttle program admirably. Nobody can make it safe. The CEV goes back to what works. Real skepticism is healthy. Your nihilism is not.

China keeps progressing in all aspects at light speed and introduced tons of jealous, fears and misunderstanding from others. Remember China was the world No.1 economy power spanned over at least 1500 years in the past. It became terrible pathetic since Chinese held same attitude as some you guys now when Western ascended in last 300 years - laugh, suspicious and ignorant. Will history repeat itself? I'm pretty sure it will if the policy makers hold same attitude as some posts here.
So while China doesn't have the US exactly by the proverbial economic balls, it has a big chunk of it. Lets just say that it would be more likley that China could control the US policy by threat of economics than threat of force. Main reason why US would be hard pressed to actually raise a finger to stop an invasion of Taiwan and why the US would never invade Iran over its nuclear program because China would object (Iran's second biggest oil consumer is China after Japan and has already threatened to veto any move to sanction Iran in the UN Security council).
"I am the king of the Romans, and am superior to rules of grammar!"
-Sigismund, Holy Roman Emperor (1368-1437)
Since the US allows outsourcing of IT work for pennies on the dollar, maybe NASA should start out sourcing this to China and save us all some money.
Sorry. Pet peeve.
No need to apologize... it's really racism by Americans and you should object. If you read elsewhere on this site and others, you'll see that Chinese people refer to their astronauts as "astronauts." It's only Americans that use a different term for astronauts from other countries, and that's just to maintain the us vs them attitude, aka racism.
The best term to use is American/Chinese/Russian astronaut, just like you'd say American/Chinese/Russian doctor or pilot or accountant.
Absolute GDP values are worthless (although if you want to compare, the EU was at 11.65 trillion in 2004). Per capita is better, but doesn't account for wealth distribution. Median income is the most meaningful number income-wise, but still doesn't factor in cost of living, and ignores how bad those who suffer the most (the poor) compare across nations. Happiness would seem a pretty good method to look at, although you get some unexpected results (such as, of all places, Nigeria being the top of the list, followed by a number of Latin American countries) because people value different things in their life differently. You can also look at economic growth, or free time.
GDP: US and EU are about on par
Growth: Very similar, although both are growing rather slowly compared to the "up and comers" (Europe had been catching up since the end of WWII, where it was left in shambles, but has slowed in recent years). China, for example, is taking off like there's no tomorrow.
Per-Capita (average) income: US is about 40% higher on average than western Europe (heavily skewed by our extremely wealthy upper class); most western European nations have average incomes similar to Arkansas and Mississippi.
Median income: US is about 10-20% higher on average than western Europe
Bottom 10% income: Western europe is about 10-20% higher on average
Free time: Essentially all of Europe works significantly less hours than the US
Overall, I'd say it's pretty close; it depends on what your priorities as an individual are.
But this Rottweiler not only is snarling and frothing at the mouth; it also went to Harvard.

According to various Chinese news sources, the launch will take place at 9:30AM 10/12 China time. Which is today.
As stated, the Shenzou capsule is based on the Russian Soyuz (the most robust and reliable craft ever) - this means, interestingly that China have the technological potential to dock with the ISS. But would the US would ever allow them? Politically, no, but it is an INTERNATIONAL space station, and arguably given Russian have been keeping it alive for the past two years, they should. be presured into it. Maybe after the US have pulled out, China could go up there.
And if Bush had been assassinated shortly after putting forth the challange to return to the moon, the money will be flowing to NASA. NASA would be struggling to find ways to spend all the money and the American people would be looking forward to the first foot prints on Mars.
Right now, it would be my guess that China stands the best chance at a run for the moon. They are actively launching ships (slowly but actively). They are not tied to the ISS like we have left the Russians (because we can't get a ship off the ground). Their people are behind the program (after all if they aren't behind it then they aren't behind the government and they will land in prison or worse). I would love to see us back on the moon and then on to Mars, but I don't believe that it will happen until the majority of American people really want it to happen. And the majority of the American people are not interested in furthering our research, and investing in our future, they are interested in spending NOW! and self indulgence. BTW, I am an American and somewhat am preaching to myself in the comments above. I have no desire for Bush to be assassinated, but that would have made a trip to Mars much more likely. Now, the fact that he made that statement has warn off most Americans and it really doesn't make a difference outside of a few cities that are heavily involved in space research.
I have no sig, does anyone have one to spare?
"Astronaut" is a stupid term since it means "star sailor."
Recently, the furthest anyone has been is less than about 300 miles above the earth's surface, hardly anywhere near the Moon let alone the Sun or any other star. Not only that, but to sail one requires air (or an atmosphere at least).
I for one, recommend the politically-correct and more accurate term Space Human In Transit or SHIT for short.
I hear that the Chinese are going to send a couple of SHITs into space tomorrow.
Well done.
Stick Men
Why doesn't NASA cooperate with other countries in exploration, technology etc?
Because the last time someone thought that, we ended up with the International Space Station. No thanks.
Seriously, having to deal with the red tape and bureaucracy of one nation's government, and making sure all the state constituencies get the proper allotment of pork-barrel spending, is enough. Problems tend to increase exponentially with the number of governments involved.
And yet, you still can't name a country that's better.
Slow down, cowboy! It has been 4 hours since you last posted. You must wait another few hours.
This is rich...
First the liberals tell me how evil the rich USA is, then they tell me how poor we really are, and how were all too stupid to know how poor we are!
Oh good god... get a life. You are not going to change my belief that the USA is the wealthiest country in the world no matter how hard you thrash and tub-thump this slashdot thread.
Its pathetic.
Absolute GDP values are worthless? OK, then I guess Mexico is a "better" nation than anything in Europe. After all, GDP is worthless. Right?
America has over 5 Million people with at least a million bucks. Millions of Millionaires. Europe is not this way. No no no... you have to be a Schroeder to get your choder.
You think Americans are all suffering and writhing in the streets? You are an idiot. Happiness is a good method? You are fucking insane! This is a cop-out because happiness cannot be measured in dollars LIKE FUCKING DOLLARS CAN.
Nigerians have the "highest happiness quotient in the world"? Liberalism is a mental disorder my friend. You have crossed the line into batshit levels of stupidity and desperation.
You are so full of shit it stinks on this board. I'm hereby declaring Europe to be the most unhappy, unsuccessful, loathesom nation on the planet. Since we are using feelings as our metrics instead of actual quantifiable numbers.
I now declare Japan to be the happiest. And even they have more fucking dollars than eurosluts living in false realities...
The English word is astronaut. What they say in China is their business. But it makes no sense whatsoever to coin another English word to mean "astronaut from China."
sulli
RTFJ.
I'll give the straight answer: no.
The reason is simple: China is still many years from building a launch vehicle capable of flying a manned mission to the Moon. While the Americans can adapt Space Shuttle hardware for Moon missions, I don't know of any other nation that have the proven hardware to fly Moon missions.
The Chinese could ask for Russian help, but alas, the Energia launcher program was dismantled a long time ago and it's a major unknown how well can you assemble a spacecraft for a Moon mission with the components launched by the Proton booster, Russia's largest current operational launch vehicle.
Its not a popularity contest. Just because most of the world wants to be ruled by communists does not mean that I will want to steer my country in the direction to appease world opinion.
... NOT!
honestly, are you that stupid?
Most of the world wants the US to be less wealthy. Of fucking course they do. Why should I go along with that? You are insane.
Most of the world does not want me to have children. Again, why would I give a fuck?
Most of the world does not want me to own a gun or buy an SUV. So, what, you want me to be a good liberal and do what the lemming herd says? OK,
Rather, I will do the opposite. I will make this country even more powerful and myself as sophisticated as possible. Rest of the world be damned...
I respect competition, like china, but the pussies who sit on the sidelines have no relevance.

Ooorr, they could just wipe China with the "Save Taiwan " excuse. If China is "dead", then there will be no one to pay the debt to. US Military is way more powerfull than China's.
Hold now - where did you get me calling the US "Rich" or "Poor"? Oh, that's right, you just made it up. Quit that.
... you have crossed the line
Absolute GDP values are worthless?
Yes, they are. How do people live in Bangladesh (GDP=275B$) compared to Luxembourg (GDP=27B$)? GDP is a worthless number on its own.
America has over 5 million people with at least a million bucks
7.5 million actually, as of 2004. Of course, the average American household had $84,454 in *debt* 2004, as well as $473,456 of government debt (their share). The bottom 20% of Americans make an average of 16k$/yr. It's the 7.5 million millionaies that make the 55 million people in this latter category appear better off than they are when you look at simplistic economic figures like you are wont to do.
Nigeria
Read it yourself. I already pointed out the weaknesses in such a study - such as the fact that different people use different standards for happiness. If you have any new ones to contribute, do so, but your gripe shouldn't be with me for pointing out what data is out there. Unless, of course, you have an aversion to data that doesn't fit into your worldview, which is seeming to be more and more the case with each post.
since we're using our feelings to be metrics
The only person here doing that is you. I'm presenting numbers, and referencing when requested. Need anything else referenced while I'm at it?

Bullshit (sorry), spaceshuttle can only fly 300 kilometers high, nothing of that will aid in going to the moon, which btw is a thousand times farther...

"Hmm, but really, what have we got from all the space research investment put into so far?" Come on, man! VELCRO! No, really, what do you mean when you ask what did we get out of it? Others have pointed out some of the material aspects, but when asking this question what you are really asking is what is the value of knowledge. My parents didn't get a free toaster when we put someone on the moon but all the research and experience gained by actually doing it is still very real. Also, exploration has always been one of the strongest drives in human history. For politicians space travel may just be propoganda but for many people it is a real and meaningful desire.
I will put this as simple as humanly possible: YOU ARE A FUCKING MORON! That is all.
How do people live in Bangladesh (GDP=275B$) compared to Luxembourg (GDP=27B$)? I would reckon that in a head to head match up, Bangladesh would be 10x more likely to win an all-out war with Luxembourg.
GDP matters. GDP matters. With $0 GDP and 10,000,000 people, you cannot defend against a single nuclear strike by 100 people with enough GDP to buy a nuke.
7.5 million actually, as of 2004. Excellent! We are very rich indeed. Oh and that pesky debt figure you raise? Worthless, its mainly comprised of mortgage debt... so anyone with 84k in debt likely has a house, and also likely has far more equity than debt.
The bottom 20% of Americans make an average of 16k$/yr. Wow, thats like what a good euroslut makes... What pray tell does the bottom 20% of europe make? Care to take a look? I bet its pretty awful..
Nigeria : you can't be happy when you are dead. No matter how "happy" you claim they are, if they cannot defend themselves against invasion, infection, or corruption, all the happiness in the world is worthless after they die at age 35. No thanks, schmuck. I like clean drinking water. It makes me ***HAPPY***
Fucking genius.
Didn't I just say "adapt Space Shuttle hardware"?
If you read NASA's web page on their future manned space program, they are adapting a lot of the launch hardware from the Space Shuttle program--though of course not the Space Shuttle itself--for the future missions.
But back to the point. China is still a poor country. While the lives of hundreds of millions of Chinese people have improved greatly over the last couple of decades, there are still large parts of China which are very poor. Nearly one-third of all children in some provinces are malnourished, for instance.
Despite all that, I don't really object to China's space program. It's still a very small part of the government's budget, and it's a hell of a lot more benign way of boosting national pride than invading other countries, the traditional way governments stoke nationalism.
Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from a rigged demo
--Andy Finkel (J. Klass?)
Indeed, NASA is currently adapting hardware that puts stuff in orbit, the Chinese also have different rockets to put stuff in orbit, and are actively developing larger rockets.
:)
My bet is on China. Russia is currently the leading space power, but they lack money. China has money and will surpass the russians soon. The US is no longer in the game, because the US spends all it's resources on lawyers and internal politics.

Also, once some country lands on the moon, can they just claim it as territory and start building on it in any fashion?
Sure they can, it's how the world has always worked. Just get a piece of land and more guns than the other people wanting the land.
This is a good thing, no matter how you slice it. If this provokes another space race, the Western world will have to put its money where its mouth is regarding space exploration, and great scientific advancements could be made by both sides. Having just one superpower does lead to some degree of stagnation.
I'll take the chances of China going to the Moon more seriously when they start building larger launch pads to accommodate large-sized boosters. Given that imagery from commercially-available imaging satellites and our NRO spysats hasn't seen any major construction activity for bigger launch pads at China's major launch facilities lately, I still can't take China's vision of going to the Moon seriously just yet.
It's not just the US. How happy would any government be about chipping in more money than they get back as concrete contracts? Not very unless they thought they were making up the difference in technology transfer. However, it's unlikely that an internation partnership to do 'X' would designate task 'Y' to the entity that has the least amount of know-how in that task (fill in appropriate values of 'X' and 'Y').
On the one hand, they say Bush is a drooling moron who's led around by Cheney, Rove, or $RANDOM_EVIL_RETHUGLICAN. On the other hand, they say he (1) figured out how to collapse two skyscrapers and make it look like someone else did it, (2) figured out how to control the weather to get tsunamis and hurricanes to wreak havoc on people he allegedly doesn't like, and (3) figured out how to generate seismic activity that leads to earthquakes.
That popping sound you just heard is the sound of a liberal's head exploding when it could no longer handle the cognitive dissonance brought about by trying to reconcile the above assertions.
20 January 2017: the End of an Error.
The fact that China is sending men to space is something that should be recognized, and honored as a great achievement for the chinese people.
The red chinese government however, is also using this as a means to let the world know that they can reach anywhere they want too on earth, with whatever sort of payload they desire, including nuclear weapons (which was the real reason US and Russia had such a competitive space race, in the beginning of it all).
The fact that they are now focusing on these technologies so rapidly, is a clear sign of preperation for war, or at least to give that perception.
A nuclear war with China may not happen by 2008 (I'll be surprised if bush doesn't get drunk some night and start launching nukes, lol), but it will happen eventually.
Don't be alarmed, just be aware.
Cheers!

But where would Wal Mart get their goods from? If people couldn't shop at Wal Mart then civilization as we know it would collapse resulting in the US going into anarchy.
Though seriously, we could force China out of Tawain, South Korea, Afghanistan, India or where ever they invade (by no means could the US ever occupy mainland China without going through another Vietnam War, but 100x worse), but we'd most likely see our economy tank with the lack of cheap goods coming from China. Although we might have to rely on internal manufacturing or India if they survived the war.

Interesting way to answer the question! "How do people live?" -> Bangladesh would win in a war". Do you always answer questions that way? If I were to ask you "What is the capital of Wisconsin?" would you answer "I hate redneck cheese farmers."? If I were to ask you "What is the largest mammal on Earth?" would you answer "Humans could beat up all of the other animals."? I mean, seriously, I find the "answer a different question" strategy cute, but it doesn't contribute to the conversation.
If what you care about is *military power* instead of quality of life (which is what the discussion was about at that point), then GDP isn't the figure you want either. Armed forces budgets would be much closer to what you want, although that, too, isn't everything, as a country with a long history of armed forces neglect will do poorly compared to one that has a long tradition of armed forces funding. You can get a pretty good overall forces assessment here.
Next time, before you change the subject, announce that you're going to do so, okay?
We are very rich indeed. Oh and that pesky debt figure you raise? Worthless, its mainly comprised of mortgage debt... so anyone with 84k in debt likely has a house, and also likely has far more equity than debt.
False. That is cumulative assets plus debt. Need a reference? The average American has a lot of negative money. The average american also has almost 9,000 dollars in credit card debt (median is 1,900 - note again how averages skew reality?).
The bottom 20% of Americans make an average of 16k$/yr. Wow, thats like what a good euroslut makes... What pray tell does the bottom 20% of europe make? Care to take a look? I bet its pretty awful..
Dear God, you know nothing on this subject - why are you even debating it? I don't know from what cave you've been living in, but even the average income between the US and Western Europe isn't *that* different; the US median is only marginally higher, and the European poor are better off. Didn't I already mention this? For example, the bottom 10% of Americans average 13,301$/yr (2002). In the same time the same percentiles of the dutch were averaging $14,849, the Swedes $14,457, the Germans $13,678 and the Finns $14,495. Only in Britain were the poor relevantly worse off than the US (sorry, I don't have numbers for Italy and France, but they're probably similar to the rest of mainland Europe; Britain has economic policies more similar to the US)
Nigeria : you can't be happy when you are dead.
The dead don't get surveyed. The living know their risks of death, and weigh it. People in Nigeria, contrary to what you may believe, do have brains and are aware of the concept of mortality.
I like clean drinking water. It makes me ***HAPPY***
The survey was *NOT* whether people in America, if they moved to various countries, would be happy. The survey was whether the people who live there are happy. Heck, there's an entire religion (Buddhism) whose central tenant is reaching inner bliss through *giving up* your posessions. Happiness varies incredibly from person to person, and society to society.
I, nor the authors of the study, are asking you to give up your posessions and move to Nigeria. If you did so, you'd probably be miserable. That doesn't change the fact that the people over there are happy, of their own accord.

Well if China is 40 years beind then they will have a man on the moon in about five years, right?
Also, did I mention that China has NUCLEAR WEAPONS? I can't stress this enough people. Having a war against a nation that has a few thousand Nukes isn't a good idea, no matter how big your military is. and the US military has been weakened by the whole Iraq mess.
I want to highlight the sometimes subtle bias in science reporting presuming all-new == much-better.

Uh... you do realize that Fort Knox is used to back your currency. Selling it would devalue your dollar.
Selling land to who, exactly? You do realize, that the state would veto this right away. Realistically speaking, there's no one in your entire democracy that would allow this. You're not going to be rich, but instead, the world will think you have gone wacko, thus further devaluing the dollar.
I think you're somewhat delusioned as to what money is. It's backed by the sanity and restraint of your governments and the people's faith in it. Should you ever become part of the government, I assure you that the dollar will plummet.
Actually, I expect that by the time the Chinese make it to the Moon they will find neo(Con)artist GOP real estate developers already there, ready and waiting for them. They will have flashy 6 color real estate brochures already printed up, with all the fine print in Chinese and English.

Once you are in orbit around the Earth, you are halfway to anywhere in the solar system...
Also, just to remind: the first American manned spaceflight was in 1961 (Freedom 7) - or even later, in 1962, if you only consider orbital flights (Friendship 7). Moon landing happened in 1969 (Apollo 11) - that's just 8 years! So, if Chinese go at the same pace, we can see them on the moon somewhere around 2012...

Uh, no. Don't forget that China has "pegged" the Yuan to the dollar at a very low rare. As China increases the value of the Yuan (it started to do this earlier this year), the cost of goods produced there will increase (in comparison to the US Dollar). The increase cost of goods, will undoubtedly result in some economic slow-down in China's economy. Too much of a slow down would probably put China in some serious economic (and political) trouble.
The bad news is that China's economy is now big enough that a slow down in China would probably impact every other country in the world.
The international community is sending a lot of aid, but it appears that Pakistan's congenital disunity is a bigger problem than anything else.
The biggest problem seems to me the lack of infrastructure in the area. All the aid in the world does nothing if you can't get it to where it's needed when it's needed.

If a planet is colonized, the food and water will be produced there, no?
I have plenty of vision, but all the problems we face on earth arn't going to suddenly disappear because we can travel space.
In fact, one of the stronger motivations to "travel space" is to escape the problems here. =)
