As an end user, I can pretty much count on my applications always being in "c:\program files\*insert app/company name here*\", and the configuration files, log files, icons, will all be in the applications folder. Not spread throughout the file system. That was my initial point with that specific example.
I am sure I have said this before in previous stories of similar nature, but in the even I didnt, or no one was paying attention...
Linux is a nice kernel. It can be used to make a nice Operating System, but the fact of the matter is, even as a computer programmer, I DO NOT WANT a Unix as my desktop system. The people that do, I question their sanity. Rather then worrying about X, and GNOME/KDE to pull users in, I think for Linux to be part of a friendly, usable operating system, things like the ambiguities in the file system (/bin,/usr/bin,/usr/local/bin, etc... try explaining that to a "computer retard"®). This is just one example of the types of things "geeks" ignore that really really really are stumbling blocks for a desktop.
This is all, of course, opinion. I now feel compelled to prove what kind of OS that Linux can be used to make... other then "yet another unix ".
Wired USB devices tend to be able to suck necessary power from the USB port (v2.0 anyway)... unless we have made leaps forward in Tesla reseach, these devices wont be as wireless as you would thinks initially.
I said nothing about reinventing the wheel. But the fact that it is a dependany that is NOT guarenteed packaged with the operating system by default, you have to consider it as a liability of the application using it.
While it is impressive to write something like this in such a small binary, the "Application" as a whole is MUCH larger. The obvious dependancy on DirectX alone makes the entire app > 20MB.
This reminds me of an old made-for-TV movie called "Knight 4000", based on the old, wonderful, TV series, Knight Rider.
Some woman gets shot in the head, and for some completely random reason, they take a Microchip from the old "KITT" car, and put it in her head, and magically, she is all better.
I just remember thinking how absurd that was, now only to see it actually happening.
Cmon... look at MS word. Every new version tries harder and harder to do more for you. What you end up with is a frankestein monster that beats you with a car, when all you wanted was a ride to the mall. Maybe this is why I use notepad as my main editor.
*MY* old PCs are a bunch of pentiums... usually socket 5's even. Does this guy even remember the state of MP3's in the days of these machines? The ONLY player that would be able to play an MP3 in realtime, on "my old machines" would be winplay3 (yes... ugh)... at that would still be dodgy.
That is complete garbage-speak. I will not kil another human being, not based on moral reasons, but because I don't want to die, or worse, be locked up for life. If it was only 10-20 years, guarenteed, there are a few people I would gladly put a few holes in, for that price.
I liked Real Audio streams back when the Real Audio plugin was an embedded object in the webpage. Same holds true for windows media. I consider this to be a step in the WRONG direction... I dont want a whole app suite firing up, spamming me, just to listen to some audio.
My Rant is done.

No, but I DO wonder what a PHB is. Not everyone speaks in acronyms.
Even if this is an april fools joke, it wouldn't be so bad to get a list of places that give free samples of things like free condoms, free lube, free sex toys. Honestly.
I could be completely wrong, but in physics class, I seem to remember doing an experiment, to indicate the frequency of the power coming out of the wall was 60Hz.
Can you even download Sun's Linux? If you can, I am completely list as to how/where. Support for linux on my sparc32 is bleak... something officially from Sun would be nice.
Intuit, as well as H&R Block I think, offer an online version of their software. For turbotax.com, visit http://www.webturbotax.com
It's free to use, you simply pay for submission. You always know you are working off of their latest "updates", and no DRM will get in the way. It is Non-IE browser friendly too... and you don't have to buy an upgrade every year.
While everyone will be in favor of this, I am going to go against the grain and voice my opinion.
Just like with Microsoft, forcing X company to offer Y product is rediculous on the most fundamental level. Imagine your dream of opening up a donut shop, dedicated to cream filled donuts. This is a dream you have had forever, because no one appreciates the wonderfulness of these juicy delights, so no donut shop has any REAL selection. Your whole point of being in business is to realize your dream, and, as an added bonus, make a living from it.
NOW imagine that none of the cops like cream filled donuts, but you have the only donut shop in town. Imagine the city passing law that all donut shops HAD to serve X% of their donuts to be regular glazed, holed, donuts. What then? This KILLS the purpose of YOU being in business.
While that scenario is far fetched, it's obvious the connection to these sorts of ideas.
Rather then forcing cable companies, etc to change what they sell, give incentive, help out, whatever the little guys to compete. In the end, if the customer wants A la carte, then in a proper capatilist environment, it WILL happen. We just need to make it not so painful to fight against the big guy.
I was eagerly waiting to watch the stream on NasaTV, but the Windows Media version had no sound.... then I did the unthinkable. I clicked the real player stream link. The horror that came after... real player popped open after sucking up the rest of my free resources, popped up a spam window, made sure its little bit of spyware lauched on startup, then wanted me to "register" before I even got to watch... needless to say, I didnt.
What ever happened to MPEG1 as a low-band streaming format?
You forget that the idea of these devices, are to do one thing, and do it well. To keep things efficient and cheap, they design the device to be built from well engineered specifications.
You CAN (And they do) make more general hardware devices, driven by software, but ultimately the need for that extra juice is all cost that will be passed to you, the consumer.
I, for one, dont wants a "do everything" device that is overcost and underpowered. I just want an mp3 player that is affordable, that plays Mp3's really good.

Because DirectX 8 is NOT guarenteed to be on every supported windows version.

6502! If they use one of those on their graphic card, I am sure we could hack it to assist in some NES emulation

I just really hope no distro's of mine get overzelous and change /usr/X11R6 to /usr/X11R6.7
Y is already used as a name for this project

Strange... I am using exactally that, and it works just peachy for me.

You wouldn't be saying that, if they didn't cancel Knight Rider.
How many times have I told a cop "I didn't know that was illegal..." when I got busted. You know what they always told me? "Ignorance is no excuse"
