    I posit that texting and driving is a worse offense... a drunk driver is going to do their best to pay attention to the road and their decision to drive was made while impaired. A texting driver is making a completely sober choice to not pay attention to the road or others around them

    But the risk is still smaller than when using *.local which was never supposed to work.

    The better solution would be for you to buy yourself a cheap domain, even if you only ever use it internally. Make it your default domain, and you'll never have to explicitly enter it anywhere. The computer automatically appends it where needed. This is something you can most likely set up on your DHCP server.


    What exactly is the risk? This is how DNS should work. Not every network is globally accessible, and neither should their namesake

    And everything at *.localhost would automatically translate to 127.0.0.1, without /etc/hosts or dnsmasq workarounds

    Cmon, we aren't talking some crazy complicated configuration here. DNSMasq: add "address=/localhost/127.0.0.1" to your config file. Boom. Done.

You also can donate to the likes of Wikipedia or EFF with Bitcoin. Then you have places like Gyft or even CardCash where you can buy gift cards. There are plenty of places to spend Bitcoin

  15. It has happened before. Microsoft will choose backward compatibility over security at any day of the week. There was a exploitable flaw in NT4 with DCOM that they wouldn't patch because it would fundamentally change how things worked. Your option is to keep it, or move to something else. Same with this SMB1 crap. If you need it, it is there. But it is old and decrepit and not even MS wants to touch it. Move on.

    The app itself should work fine. However, there is a part of MSPaint that is long forgotten... it is an embeddable OLE object. If you want to use that bit, there are some registry entries you'd probably have to move over as well

    I consider that totally different. The discounted pickup is because A) they didn't have to use valuable shelf space in the store, and B) It got shipped on a truck bound for the store, using up space in the truck that would normally not get filled.
