Great idea! Oil for Food, Sex for Food, Sex for IP numbers.

Seriously, even though the complaint that ICANN is too US-centric is justified, turning anything over to the UN is ridiculous. They've messed up so much. Dutch peacekeepers looking the other way in Bosnia, etc.

After years wanting a quiet PC I found a really easy way--I bought Dell Optiplex GX 270 SD. Dell has engineered the box to be quiet. It has a proprietary heatsink assembly over a Pentium IV as well as quiet Maxtor drive. I keep it on my desk and it's almost silent.

Also, it can be had really cheap from Dell Outlet

And you can send it back if it's too noisy--USA ONLY!!

The P2P distribution method is so compelling that it will win out -- even if it's illegal right now.

For Americans this might not be case. Let's keep in mind the way drug research is supported. Americans subsidize medicines for the entire world through high drug prices as well as the NIH grants that go to researchers in American universities. In the rest of the world the same medicines are available at much lower cost. In a parallel way, MPAA may keep US citizens from using P2P, but the rest of us will get it for free.

Even though Amazon will ship old Bogart films practically anywhere in the world, the fact is that any Bogart film ever made can be easily downloaded on eMule by anyone on the Internet. As someone in Eastern Europe right now, I am certain the P2P global availability will break the back of MPAA/RIAA.

  8. Perelman and the prize on Russian May Have Solved Poincare Conjecture · · Score: 5, Interesting

Perelman was unemployed for 10 years while he worked on the problem. His last job was in the States in the early 90s, where he saved enough money to live in Russia for the whole time he worked.

So think about his perspective: he's a complete loner who was ignored by the mathematical community for 10 years! Now that he's going to be a "certified" genius (with the $1M prize) why exactly should he care.

Also, it's worth pointing out that like Wiles (who solved the Fermat Conjecture), Perelman's work develops a theory that has the Poincare conjecture as a corollary which is interesting but not of central importance.

There is one item on the opposition's agenda, however, that Mr Badawi seems likely to neglect. So far, he has barely mentioned, let alone dismantled, the various repressive measures that Dr Mahathir employed to dampen dissent. The government still controls the airwaves, potential critics have difficulty obtaining newspaper licences, opposition politicians are jailed without trial, protest rallies are banned. As one activist points out, when the government's critics are cowed, the corruption and inefficiency Mr Badawi says he is battling are sure to thrive.

When Mrs. Tawny Huxton opened her son Timmy's bedroom door, she was shocked to see his innocent white hiney nestled into the new 7ft Jar Jar Binks doll she had bought him for his birthday. Lately, many Americans have suffered similar incidents. Young children are being seduced by the character of George Lucas' latest Star Wars Movie.
