That wouldn't do any good if people have no idea of what mozilla, opera and safari are (and even if you include text explaining it, doubt most people would read it anyway). The way I'd see it more feasable is if they included two options, a "install default apps" that would install MSIE (of course I'd rather firefox be the default... but it's MS, let's be realistic there), their mail app and so on, this one set as default so people that are used to next-next-next aren't bothered, and a "install custon apps" that would ask you which ones you want for each task.

Of course, the ideal would be for people to do informed choices, but we all know that's not going to happen anytime soon for most of the non geek crowd...

    I guess YMMV.

I have no idea about speed in general (chrome feels just as fast as FF for me on that sense), but at least on the javascript front the difference is noticeable, at least on some pages. Biggest example I can think of right now is digg.com. You open a discussion there set to expand all threads and I see noticeable slowdown on firefox (digg.com even warns you of that if you set it to expand all threads). On chrome it works instantly with no slowdown at all.

An while I haven't actually seen javascript hanging the browser (that I know offhand, though I'm highly suspicious of one last night), I've lost count of the times where flash has done it (on linux, where I do most of my internet browsing).

I still do most of my browsing on FF, but honestly I see lots of potential for chrome... and as they say, the more competition, the better for the consumers... :)

US or UK news sources, probably not... but it would be a treasure for venezuelan news sources, specially the ones mostly controlled by the oposition like Globovision, El Nacional or El Universal. Heck, if wikileaks wasn't saying they would publish it later anyway, I'd even see the venezuelan government or some of the pro chavez media bidding on it to prevent them being public.

I think you have the words "content" and "platform" confused.

However, what's the content without a platform?... what's a platform without content on it?... I think both go hand in hand in this case.

There might have been lots of ways to put video on the internet before, both open and closed, all with advantages and disadvantages. Flash (in the case of video with sites like youtube, at least) helped create a platform for videos where it's lightweight AND (I think the most important) easy enough that people without technical inclination could upload and watch videos without having to hunt and download codecs for it (note that in most cases upgrading flash means just visiting a site and restarting the browser).

There might have been better ways, or more practical.. but the implementation is what wins in these cases, not the ideas alone, and in this particular case, Flash turned out to be the best tool for the job at the moment.

However, I do hate it when it comes to excess of flash in websites navigations, except in some cases where the actual flash is the message (like some artistic websites) and not the way to get the message.

Preinstalled being the key word here.

Where I work we create videos for different companies, and usually we have to send some of them over email or websites for the clients to aprove... and it's a nightmare. MPEG is great as long as it's something under 30 secs or it won't go trough most email servers. WMV is the one we use the most... except for some clients that are using macs.. and others that are using linux... most formats require something to be installed in one way or another, and unless people work with video or are tech oriented, the safest is to assume it won't be installed (heck, even tech oriented people don't have the freedom to install video codecs on work computers).

Flash video becamse the de facto standard because it just works, you grab any computer and you can have a hich percentage of certainty that it'll work, and it'll load fairly fast (much faster than MPEG1 that seems to be the most universal format out there, at least)

I guess it's kinda like in game when you want someone to craft you something/enchant an item... you give the materials, and then if you don't know the person it's a leap of faith that they won't just run away with them and ignore you (which is why when I've done it, and so far has gone good all the time, I tip generously)... and at least on the european side, according to forums, the GM's see it as "working as intended".
