    By the summer of 2005, the United States will have an underwater network of robots monitoring the nations fresh water supply.

    The article only mentions a project to monitor the Seneca River, some connected lakes, and an existing system that monitors part of the water supply for New York City. That's not quite "the nation's fresh water supply," although it is certainly a promising technology.

  11. Pedantry at its finest on The Logic Behind Metric Paper Sizes · · Score: 1

    For what it's worth, metric paper isn't actually the same shape, either. It just comes a lot closer than non-metric paper does.

    Example:
    A4 = 210x297
    297 / 210 = 1.41428571429

    A5 = 148x210
    210 / 148 = 1.41891891892

    Furthermore, none of these has a ratio equal to the square root of 2, since that's impossible using integer lengths for the sides. Still a better standard for paper sizes than what we're using in the U.S., though.

    Apparently this is some new use of the word "ready" with which I am not familiar. Neat technology, no doubt, but it doesn't really look like it's ready for prime time just yet.

  18. Re:CS has very little to do with math on Math And The Computer Science Major · · Score: 1
    You can learn CS without any math at all. CS is about finding algorithms, which has more in common with cooking than calculating.

    I think what you're forgetting is that the biggest thing you take away from a (good) math education isn't a set of equations and formulas, but is an ability to set up structured arguments and proofs.

    You say that CS is about finding algorithms. What exactly are you doing with them once you've found them? It sure would be handy if you could, for example, prove that algorithm A is always faster than algorithm B, or demonstrate that algorithm C doesn't handle certain situations, instead of just guessing or trusting your gut. That's exactly where a solid understanding of mathematics comes in.

    How about firing the genius who lets laptops connect directly to the internal network? It's a laptop, the whole point is that it's portable. It should be assumed that it will be taken somewhere else and connected to untrusted networks. At your facility, you should connect laptops to a purgatorial network between firewalls, so that they're protected from the outside world but don't have unrestricted access to everything on the inside. It's just common sense.

    When you're done with that, the main Legend of Zelda site has some (less detailed) walkthroughs for all the other Zelda games (except WindWaker and Link to the Past/Four Swords, since Nintendo is currently selling guidebooks for those).
