What bugged me most about the iPod is the not inconsiderable additional outlay I would have to make on cables, adaptors, etc.
What the heck are you talking about? The iPod comes with the firewire cable, USB 2.0 cable, AC adpter, and headphones. You keep the headphones on your ears, and use either firewire or USB for connecting to the computer. That's IT. What not inconsiderable outlay on cables and adapters are you talking about? Methinks you know very little about iPods.
In my mind at least, the iPOd was dead.
See above. There is nothing wrong with the iPod. You walk over to the computer and plug in the firewire cable.
Over the last two months, I have picked up two Creative Nomad Muvo TX FM players - they are only 256 MB each - I actually like that because it gives me a constant chance to decide my daily playlist on my computer
You can decide your playlist on the iPod as well, except you wouldn't have to re-upload every day;)
Furthermore, The player itself converts effortlessly into a USB drive for those urgent file copy needs. Also, it plays FM, looks slick, has a single-button interface and the wife loves it - two players for $160 total.
Single button interface? See click wheel.
Finally, WMP 10 killed my constant usage of iTunes as well mainly because of the Sync List feature.
Windows Media Player 10. Over iTunes. *snicker*
The news that Apple is willing to turn off features in its iTunes, a la 4.7, is not surprising
What are you talking about? iTunes 4.7 adds Photo orginization for the iPod Photo.
and I, for one, am glad I do not have an iPod.
So am I. You obviously don't know enough about iPods to use one, no matter how simple the interface.
Sorry for being a bit rude, but this post was so know-it-all and anti-iPod that I got annoyed.
I'd expect that this has more to do with Intel than with Microsoft.
Intel has hit a brick wall. They're having a hard time increasing processor speeds. At some point, they'll realize that the best way to get a processing speed boost is to slap a second core in the processor and call it a Pentium 5 or Pentium 4 Ultra or something like that, and sell it in high end desktops like Alienware.
Guess what happens if Microsoft charges per core? Intel won't be too happy with them...
"Are there no existing spyware programs for *N*X and Macs? The market is up for grabs! I better get cracking on developing some new spyware!"
Well, I think you were TRYING to be sarcastic, but actually, there ARE no existing spyware programs for Macs;)
" Hell, what reason would M$ have to port Windows to a platform where they know that no one will buy there product."
Actually, I see some good reasons for M$ to port Windows to PPC.
Consider. Person A wants Person B to get a Mac. Person B already has a Windows PC and has therefore paid for a Windows license. Person B is worried that all his programs he already owns will be useless. Person A says, "Well, if that's all you're worried about, buy Windows XP-PPC, and you can run your Windows programs when it's necessary".
Person B buys a Mac, then person B buys ANOTHER Windows license. Bam, Microsoft now has made twice as much money as they would have if the person had kept with his Windows computer.
Additionally, people get it for less when they get Windows XP with a PC they buy. Since a Mac would come with OS X, they'd have to buy XP PPC seperately, and as a result have to buy it for $200 or $300, also giving extra profits to Microsoft.
When people hear they can still run Windows on Macs, more people will buy Macs and run Windows on them, meaning more people will buy second copies of Windows. Micro$oft doesn't care what hardware you use, as long as you're paying for and using Windows on it.
"Remember, Intel sells products to millions and millions of people, most of which do not realize that MHz does not equal performance. One of my friends was just complaining the other day how this laptop he wanted with a Pentium M cost more than the Pentium 4 but ran half as fast. Marketing rules all, and when you're trying to crank out a profit, you do what you need to do to sell your product."
That's nothing. I had a friend tell me how the Athlon 64's are nice, but he wants a Pentium 4 because the Athlon 64's are way too slow. They're only 2.4 GHz!
Again, did anyone think about binaries? Windows/x86 binaries wouldn't run on Windows/PPC. Now, they could add on an emulation layer, and since the entire OS and API's wouldn't be emulated, it'd be a heckuvalot faster than Virtual PC.
If they could make it fast enough and use the graphics card...fast enough that a 2 GHz G4 can emulate at LEAST a 1 GHz P3, or a dual 2.5 G5 can at least outrun a 3 GHz Pentium 4, and can use the graphics card, it might be worth switching, since you could play most Windows games and run most programs (even ones that use the graphics card).
Additionally, it'd have to be able to dual boot with OS X without a ton of work.
"Who the hell modded this bollocks insightful, window transparency, shadows, and various other pretty effects all existed prior to quartz extreme.
Everything still works without quartz extreme, as many of the machines still officially supported by OS X are not QE capable.
Please someone with a brain mod this down to -1 Troll where it should be."
Are you blind? Maybe you didn't read my post? I said that it uses QE to SPEED IT UP, and if QE wasn't there, it would DECREASE PERFORMANCE.
This is 100% TRUE. Sorry if I'm being harsh, but I dislike being called a Troll when I make a correct statement.
Yes, EVERYTHING STILL WORKS. I have a G3 with no graphics card. But, it works SLOWER. That was the point of my post- if CherryOS does not use the graphics card, all the graphical effects will SLOW IT DOWN even further. And it is not full hardware support as they claim.
I mean seriously, what happens if you get a virus or experience some kind of major crash in your brain? This brings true meaning to the phrase, "Blue Screen of Death".
Reading the article, it says that it claims full hardware support, and lists: " It also includes full hardware support: hard drive, CPU, RAM, FireWire, USB, PCI, PCMCIA bus, Ethernet networking and modem."
No graphics card listed. Usually, that's not a big problem, BUT, Mac OS X uses Quartz Extreme to render all the windows in 3d with shadows and fancy coloring. No graphics card = horrid windowing performance.
So does this use graphics card? Because if it doesn't, we're going to have choppy windows jumping around, performance loss when you move the mouse over the dock, choppy Expose, etc. And graphics card isn't listed.
crap, I meant THINK about binaries instead of Thing. lol.
Anyway:
"1) The installer supports fat-binaries (binaries for more than one architecture inside one installer package), inherited from NeXT."
Yes, *but* this still makes any earlier Mac OS X programs completely incompatible, such as Photoshop, Final Cut, etc, until the companies recompile them and offer fat binary editions.
Uh...did anyone think about BINARIES? x86 binaries won't run on PowerPC processors, and PowerPC binaries won't run on x86. If Mac OS X ran on x86, it wouldn't be able to run any PPC-compiled programs (basicly, EVERY MAC PROGRAM IN EXISTANCE), nor would it run windows programs due to lack of API's. Basicly, it wouldn't run ANYTHING whatsoever. It would suck.
Why are they picking on Apple's proprietary DRM and open format? Microsoft uses a proprietary DRM AND proprietary format. So does Sony. And there's no other major DRMed formats other than those three. AAC is the least of the three evils, since it's the only one with an open format! (WMA, Sony's format that I forgot the name of, and AAC) Why not pick on Microsoft FIRST, or Sony, then Apple? Why single out Apple?
Most music stores are WMA- one is AAC- and they pick on the AAC one? Did Microsoft bribe them or something?
Mac OS X is the bigger thread, of course. Or, that is, it WILL be. Why? XBox 2 will run on a G5. That's a PowerPC processor. It shouldn't be hard at all to get Mac OS X running on that.
" People have been predicting the death of MacOS and Apple for almost 2 decades now. That "wizard" over at PCMag, John Dvorak, has been doing so for almost that long, and look at where that prediction has gone."
Uh...this year is the twentieth anniversary of MacOS. I don't think they were predicting the death of MacOS and Apple 2 decades ago...unless they were predicting the death of MacOS the instant it came out. lol
Though your point is correct (above is just a nitpick)- people have been predicting the death of MacOS for a while, and Apple's stocks have been shooting through the roof since OS X came out. lol.
Interesting. Hopefully, they'll either be based on:
A) After Return of the Jedi- in this case, following the X-wing series (liberation of Coruscant and all) and the Thrawn trilogy (yay!) by Zahn. The problem with this is that the actors are way too old to play Luke and Wedge and Han and Leia and Lando.
B) New Jedi Order. Some of the best books in all of Star Wars. The character shields are GONE- Chewbacca dies, along with a number of Expanded Universe characters throughout the year. The especially useful part is that it takes place 25 years after Return of the Jedi, meaning they could use Mark Hamill and he'd fit right in;) The problem is twofold- 1) It'd be very, very easy to screw it up and make it really bad, and 2) To the people who haven't read the books in between, it'd look really silly- they finish the Clone Wars to have a Galactic Civil War, then after that go straight to the Yuuzhan Vong Invasion. One enemy for another.
"But is it doomed much like Nintendo's previous hardware? PS/2 and XBox are royally kicking Nintendo's ass at the sport that Nintendo once ruled."
Actually, XBox is losing to Nintendo. The GameCube sold more units and Nintendo raked in more profits than the XBox. But yeah, the PS2 is beating the GameCube and XBox put together.
Not only that, but Nintendo still rules the handheld market. The GameBoy Advance SP is utterly unrivaled. And the only competitor to the Nintendo DS- the PSP- costs twice as much ($300), and requires you to buy the same games you might already have on playstation 2 on minidisks. I predict Nintendo will remain in dominance in the handheld market.
" I, for one, still find the best games ever to be ones that came on the NES and SNES. Final Fantasy series up until 6 (3 in the US), etc. FF aside, Nintendo is still home to some of the best RPGs ever made. Lets hope the DS does the same."
I expect it will. I hope we see a Zelda DS:)
...looks like a $25 price drop. And its good PictoChat is bundled- it looks like it'd be a tad fun to fiddle with, but not worth any money, so no one would buy it if it wasn't.
One question: Didn't they already have a ship date? GameStop has been giving out reservations for the DS for a month.
What bugged me most about the iPod is the not inconsiderable additional outlay I would have to make on cables, adaptors, etc.

"That one's so easy even a kid can do it."
Actually, that's true. I've seen a kid use this exploit. *snicker*
The Ethernet connector costs extra. The GameCube WITHOUT ethernet is $99. So the ethernet adapter knocks the price over the limit.
Plus CD's won't fit in it...
They really should use the actors from Smallville. It sorta sucks to have the movie and the show have completely different actors.
I'd expect that this has more to do with Intel than with Microsoft.

OpenGL 2.0 sounds fun. Can't wait to see it in Mac OS X.

Forget DirectX 9!
