I'm a father of 4. Our newbie was born at 23 weeks/0 days gestation in December. He isn't due until April 12th. (Doing great, BTW) Birth weight was 1lb 6oz. (now at 2lbs 5oz.)
My son just got transferred out of the NICU at Children's Hospital in MPLS yesterday. He has needed numerous blood products, several surgeries and we still have a long road ahead. The odds are that he will have some developmental problems in the future. We banked his cells. Perhaps they are not going to do us any good today - tomorrow may just help our little man.
You just never know what is going to happen. For me, it is quite worth the investment.
"It seems that the system required the voter to insert a smart card to identify the voter, type in their selected candidate number, then press "ok", check the candidate details on the screen, and then press "ok" again. Some voters did not press "ok" for the second time, but instead removed their smart card from the voting terminal prematurely, causing their ballots not to be cast."
No. This isn't a glitch nor a problem with the machines. 98% of the voters got it right. That means that the directions were pretty clear.
This sounds like a nice feature to keep stupid people from voting.
It "boasts" an amazing amount of ready-for-release software such as Ubuntu and many full-speed emulators
The console is as powerful as the original Xbox and on a par with the Nintendo Wii.
All this, and we are lucky to pre-order???
Lisa: They can't seriously expect us to swallow that tripe. Skinner: Now as a special treat courtesy of our friends at the Meat Council, please help yourself to this tripe.
Anybody that really wants ad blocking can do it now. Most of the people that do want it don't use IE.
All that this changes is control of the ads that are shown in IE. Instead of some 3rd party ad, you will get an ad that is 'blessed' by microsoft (after the advertiser pays a fee to M$).
From Microsoft's decription:
"Have you ever wanted to take your web browsing "off the record"? Perhaps you're using someone else's computer and you don't want them to know which sites you visited. Maybe you need to buy a gift for a loved one without ruining the surprise. Maybe you're at an Internet kiosk and don't want the next person using it to know at which website you bank."
In most civilian jobs you have to sign a paper that states something like "what you do for the company is the company's property". I suspect that most agreements are a bit more stringent than that. When you are in the Armed Forces of the United States, I'd say that those rules apply, even more so.
It appears that this guy took his employer's 'system', redesigned it and then tried to profit from it by having a vendor sell it back to his employer. That stuff would get you fired at my company. I wouldn't expect it to go over well for somebody in the armed forces either.
I'm sorry dude. You did a great job by helping out. But... Your job is to help out. Suing the US Government over something that you produced while working as a government employee isn't going to work.
Fender: [singing] I'm singing in the oil / I'm singing in the oil / After all that work and toil / I'm just slipping in the oil / I know where I've been sent / I'm covered in lubricant... My life has been turned around. From now on, I'm a winner!
$3,200,000,000 isn't chump change. This is an organized effort.
Are these people that good? Is it that hard to follow the trail?
Do the companies care that their consumers are being duped?
No. Really. Have you ever hit up paypal or ebay regarding a fraudulent transaction? Nothing usually ever comes of it. Why think that they will change now?

Without the Bush, I would never have been a father.
Something you probably would never understand.

It appears from the picture in the article that Chewbacca was way ahead of this guy.

The Commerce Department is not the US Chamber of Commerce.
Chamber of Commerce = non-for-profit business federation.
Commerce Department = Federal Government Entity.
As a matter of fact, the Commerce Department OBJECTS to a "Copyright Czar"
It boasts a processor capable of up to 900 MHZ,
It is 'possibly' the world's fastest console.
It "boasts" an amazing amount of ready-for-release software such as Ubuntu and many full-speed emulators

Kaloi Akhilgov is an attorney BTW. I can't remember a time when I heard one tell the truth so soon after something happened.
Beer my friend, just beer and not the cool-aid.

IE8 is supposed to solve all of that? Bullshit.
Who the hell is drinking this cool-aid?
If /. were fair and balanced would each posting as an AC be treated as +1 subscriber?????

Ah... I seem to remember another one as well.
Instead of using shrimp particles, they want to be politically correct and use nanoparticles.

That will be USA 193 (06-057A, #29651). This is it's current orbit:
USA 193
1 29651U 06057A 08022.26925691 0.00105000 00000-0 21306-3 0 07

Lowest point is about 275 km above earth surface currently.
This under the right conditions is an easy to see object: it can reach magnitude
+1 and because of its low orbit is very fast, spectacular to see.

"Last year, the FDA approved the first combined atropine and oxime auto-injector for use by emergency personnel."
I don't know the history, but in 1987(and certainly earlier) the US military had this for the 'troops'. It was in 2 injectors, not one.
atropine and 2 pam chloride (a oxime)

RIP Laika
Glad that I could be part of the winning team!
Thanks for letting me take a whack at the E250.
I was just at the /. party in MN, at Vibrant.
We took a hammer to many pieces of hardware.
It was a good feeling to hit that old E-250.
I'd love to take it to Comcast.
Here is a nice graph that shows sunspot data from 1620 to 2000
http://spaceweather.com/glossary/sunspotnumber.html
We can see that this isn't anything new.
BTW - If you are interested in Auroras, keep watch on the 18th-19th. We are about to get hit with a solar wind stream.

Does anybody remember Google Web Accelerator? This also came out with the 'selling point' that it would help the customer:

Google has your mail. They have your searches. Now they are going for your browsing history.
Add it all together and you have a lot of business intelligence. Time to target consumers and influence opinions?
Smart yes, but still quite scary.
What information are they going to collect next? What are they doing with all the information that they are already collecting?
