Selling music has dominated the industry for centuries, it seems to have done a pretty good job of it.
What? Recording has only been around for what, a little over a century? For the eons prior to that, artists got paid for performing. It worked for so long for a good reason, people like the thrill of a real concert. I go to symphony concerts rather than buy the music because there are telltale nuances in every performance that makes it special.
I have two of their players and one has endured four years of almost daily duty in a blacksmith shop. In warm weather, I have a problem with the headphone wires catching and throwing the player across the shop, invariably slamming into something hard (not many soft things in a blacksmith shop).
Through all of this abuse, it still goes. I just bought a newer larger volume model for myself and another like my old one for my wife - odd she didn't want the grimy beat up old one. The old one still works, but it sits on my desk now as a reminder of how cool a $70 mp3 player can be.
As a blacksmith (and IT worker...go figure), I've found this to be very true. I work for hours with tongs, which effectively extend my grasp up to two feet. The funny part is that I don't really think of it, I just do it. When my sister and I visited the Air and Space museum, they had a "be an astronaut" exercise where you had to use tools made for space. They were basically 2 feet long. People were having all sorts of problems with them, banging around, missing, etc. I had absolutely no issues because I'm used to thinking about 2 feet beyond my hands.
Now, that being said, you do condition yourself in other ways. When you drop things in a blacksmith shop, you watch them fall, you don't try to catch them. This lesson is learned once and never repeated again!:-)
You left out that the Democratic party was formed around a group of conservatives who did not want a change to the status quo...ie, slavery and states rights. The Republican Party of the 1860s was very liberal, fighting for the rights of all people, poor, colored, etc. They were in favor of federal control and felt that the government should help the common man.
What you left out was that the two parties essentially switched place in the 40s and 50s. The Democrats began sliding toward the left, becoming more liberal. This caused a groundswell of conservatives to bolt from the party, forming the Dixiecrats. These people began to fill the ranks of the Republicans as that party drifted to the right. The result was that by the 1980s, the Republican Party was the party of limited federal government (states rights) and business before the common man (slavery?). Democrats took up the torch of liberalism (change...being liberal is about introducing change into the system!!!!!!) and pushed for more social reforms which increased the government.
Something strange is happening now...its the switch all over again, except that people aren't really seeing it. The Neo-Cons are essentially the extreme right heading out on their own again. The Republican party had attracted a large number of middle to lower class people based on the platform of religion and guns (two areas that hold great sway for them) while the Democrats have begun to attract more "conservative" types who want less government and a balanced budget!!! This is a switch happening before our eyes. The real question then become which party will become which. I think that this is why the candidates that are running are so diverse. There is no one overriding issue like there was last time (civil rights) to really divide the parties.
The point is that the current administration is the Dixiecrats, they will support big business is that business treats them with the honor befitting the ruling class, the plantation owners if you will, and they will gladly tell the masses that they are really looking out for them.
Case in point: In the 8 years in office, has Bush done anything to lessen gun control? All they have done is let a bill sunset...no successful attempts to allow more lax laws. How about religion? They talk about it all the time, but when congress and the president were of the same party, they didn't radically change everything and require prayer in schools, 10 commandments everywhere etc.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not with everybody else. I'm just trying to figure out where my vote will go and it doesn't look pretty right now.
Pro-gun, socially conscience, and against intrusive governments....
I ask because the issue with children's toys and wall paint is that children tend to put things in their mouths. That is where lead is harmful. Handling it isn't that dangerous, certainly the small amount need to paint characters onto a keyboard wouldn't harm you even if you ate the keys whole.
Oh, I have two keyboards, one where the characters are almost completely gone and the other pristine. They are the same model. The difference? One is in my office where I don't have food, extranous dirt, etc. The other is in my shop where dirt and dust are ever present. If you want to preserve that new keyboard look...clean your hands before using it and blow the dirt and dust off of the keyboard!
The thing to remember is that these are specs for the car, not the driver. Its an autonomous vehicle, so as long as the tires don't melt, there isn't any reason for it to not perform that well without passengers. The F16 can endure much higher G loads than the pilot, but the computer prevents the plane from doing it.
Now the real physics fun is to calculate the heat from the brakes and the surface contact area needed to bleed off that much kinetic energy.
I'd be happy to see most people, not just activists admit when they are wrong, rather than continue to push forward. I fear that this is why people still support the war in Iraq and Bush. They simply don't want to admit that they backed the wrong horse.
Wow....I had always assumed that it was a fun space adventure story that had pretty lights, cool uniforms, and nifty battles. I didn't realize that it was the stuff of Master's dissertations and comparative lit studies!
I've had my Lexar 1GB Sport go through the wash several times (and the dryer!!!). All of the markings are gone and the rubber cover has been replaced twice, but the little drive still works great. I carry it everyday, everywhere.
Have you ever seen someone who uses an abacus daily? For daily addition, they can perform as fast as you can enter the info into a calculator. Fast and without electricity!
Besides, how often does the average person use a computer for computing? I seldom use the calculator (in fact I find myself using Google more!). If the number is too big to do in my head, I'll resort to a calculator, but usually one on my desk. If I had an abacus, I might be inclined to use it!
The biggest point I can make is: how many really good books can you get for $400? I can bring home a crate of books from a used bookstore for much less. I'll take the real deal, thanks!
Oh, and what are supposed to do when you're trapped on a deserted island? Your ebook will die in a week, while the real book will keep you company long after you loose your mind!
I must say that this is a good example of evolution. Just think, 20 years ago, this basement dweller was often identified by three traits: Cheez-Its, Mountain Dew, and mono-chromatic CRTs. Then along came the color CRT, but no change in the diet. Today the descendants (if you could call them that...there are very few examples of reproduction in this species) still engorge on Cheez-Its and Mountain Dew, but have evolved to use LCDs. Amazing...what will be next....
Well stated, but I would like to challenge the convention that it doesn't make you an "ist". I would wager that many of these people would self identify as enthusiasts.

"Eye Que"?
Was doing fine until hurdle six when I has to stop because seven eight nine! Sheesh....
Eh...I wouldn't recommend lighting up with his car's cigarette lighter....
No Kidding...Creative is amazing.

Awesome. Simply.....awesome. Thank you....
For what its worth, the captcha is boatload. These things rock!

1.3m = 4ft and change. Wow, that is a small bridge. Perhaps that the problem over there, you guys keep hitting your heads going to get a pint!
Actually, they'll just call Mr. Ying as a witness for the defense and everything will balance out.
The Headphones!!! They Do Nothing!!!
