Yes, because that "Boyz in the Hood" movie with Ice Cube was just awful, wasn't it? . Just because someone is known for rapping doesn't mean that they can't act. Colors, 8 Mile, and the aforementioned Boyz in the Hood are proof of that.

Or could it be, perhaps, that your virgin image of characters in books couldn't possibly adapt to having a black man, let alone a "street-wise" black man, in a leading role?

If you really did a fair amount of research into biometrics, you would surely realize that retina scanning is not done too often; it's actually iris scanning. You people need to settle down and realize that Star Trek 2 and Demolition Man are just movies.

Retina scanning would require holding very still and getting a laser bounced into your eye. Not much fun, possibly painful, and a lawsuit waiting to happen. Iris scanning uses an infrared camera to look at the iris (and looks for stuff like minute movement, blinking, the shine of liquid, etc that a real human eye would have). The iris has something like 200 degrees of freedom to measure a biometric against.

At least one portion of your comment wasn't total BS: biometrics won't replace passwords, they will complement them. Remember: something you know, something you have, something you are.

This actually brings up an interesting point. Does Windows have less bugs (I know, I know) than these Linux distros? Or are Red Hat and Novell more proactive to fix the bugs they do have? Unfortunately, my guess is most PHBs would think the former.

Yes, but if you're running an unpatched system (Linux, Windows, Mac, or otherwise), don't you deserve what you get?

For people who actually care about security, the toughest part about dealing with Windows is when you first plug the network cable in to the time when you get all of your patches up to date. Most of us get around this by having everything ready on physical media so we don't need to plug it in until we're ready.

Once it's up to a baseline spec, though (for XP-SP2, hotfixes, firewall enabled, antivirus, AdAware/Spybot/MS AntiSpyware, Firefox, TBird, and most importantly not running as an administrator) I would say its security is comparable to my Linux machine.

This is great to know. I moved recently, and went with DirecTV for one reason: dual tuner DirecTiVo. I had a Series 2 standalone that I'd used with Comcast, and while I loved it, the delay in changing channels and a single tuner made me want the DirecTV version.

Now that DirecTV is making noises about dropping TiVo, it's good to know that I'll have a similar option in the future, even if it does mean going back to Comcast.

How big of an honor can it be, anyway? Hitler was it 1938.

Time's Person (nee Man) of the Year originally was not meant to be a "This person did the greatest things this year" award. Rather, it was about who most influenced current events that year...hence why both Hitler and Stalin recieved it.

Many argue that the Person of the Year for 2001 should have been Osama bin Laden, rather than Rudolph Giuliani. No one is going to say that bin Laden is a nice guy...but his actions influenced 2001 more than any single person.

Apparently Time had some pretty big arguments in-house when it came to picking the Person of the 20th Century. Again, if you're choosing Most Influential Person, it probably would have been Hitler, but in these PC days it's not something that most would find accceptable.

No, it won't. Most big name artists...check that, most big name labels won't come anywhere near this with its limited DRM. I can't say I agree with it, but money talks and $DEITY knows that the big 5 are all about money.

I would like to think as you do that bands will skip the middleman and go right to publishing their music online, but that wouldn't just be a radical shift for the music industry...it'd basically be blowing it up and starting it all over again. The promotion machine that is the music industry is what bands need to try to make money, not the selling outlet.

  20. Listen on Tips For A Budding Project Manager? · · Score: 2, Insightful

Listening is probably the most important skill you can develop. You'll be bombarded on all sides: executives, programmers, sales people, marketing, etc. You're going to have to be able to listen to all of them and make decisions. Don't let any one group override and other particular group; you'll be tempted to let your programmers make all of the decisions, but remember that the reason you are there is to develop a product to sell for $$$.

Learn how to communicate effectively in both written and verbal forms. If you're seeing that the schedule is falling behind, don't wait until the last minute to alert the rest of the team to it. Put together a plan (we lost a lot of time because feature X was much more complex than we planned. We can either cut feature Y and hit our date, or add feature Y as planned on slip the date by a month) and present to the other decision makers in a concise fashion. Don't be argumentative...just logical.

Remember again that development does not take place in a vacuum; chances are your manager along with other executives made date and revenue commitments based on the development schedule. If it slips, or features change, they need to know ASAP. They have customers to sell to who need to know what's going to be in the product. They have marketing collateral and website updates that need to get in place. They have sales and tech support people that need to be trained. Your job is to make sure that all of these things can happen. The number 1 goal of any for-profit company is to make money. You need to give both your programmers and the other key stakeholders you work with the ability to do that.
