I have the Linksys WRT54g. There are currently 3 groups creating custom firmware. The fixes and features are rolled out quite a lot faster than Linksys provides. I feel that I have one of the most powerful wireless routers on the market for around $80 now. The bandwidth management and remote VPN features are sweet. Linksys would have never implemented that.
I always wondered why a few engineers don't create an open source hardware solution. I imaging a wireless router isn't more than a few chips laid down on a board. A group should get together and create an open-source hardware platform and then sell it at a slight margin to make up the manufacturing costs. Then let the software gurus continue to add features. Just make sure that the unit has enough ram and MIPS to process future functions. I'm not sure of the BOM cost for a wireless router, but I'm sure it's pretty cheap. An open source hardware router could probably sell for $20 when massed produced. There are 802.11b routers selling that cheap now.

As a Linux newbie (currently don't have Linux installed, but have used it and plan to install it soon), it would be nice to know which are the most popular packages. Most people would like to have an idea of what the more experienced users use, and thus would like to try it themselves. In addition to knowing the most popular packages, it would probably be a quicker install be having the best ones at the beginning of the installation process instead of having to swap CDs too many times.
Putting together hotmail, MSN, and AOL will create the largest newbie base on the Internet. I can forsee these users contracting tons of viruses and comprimised machines to be used form spamming. Luckiliy, with that many people the spammers will spam them and leave the rest of us alone. However, with all those newbies, it would be a huge chance for Microsoft to propogate thier propaganda to those most nieve.
yeah, sorry there. I commented on my cd-burner that I liked, but I haven't burnt too many cds with my dvd burner yet. Just +R, -R, and the +RW that came with the drive. All at 4x speed
Where did you read that? I though that Lite-On's were pretty good. I've been real happy with my Lite-On 24x CD burner. I don't think I've ever burned a coaster with it.
I just bought a Lite-On LDW-411S dual format drive. I hope I'm not affected by this. I wish I had read the article before hand, but as of now I haven't had any problems with -R, +R, or +RW discs yet.
They should have used a wifi standard. They could have sold to a larger market. Many cities (ie, Verizon in Manhattan) are putting up wifi hot spots. Then you wouldn't be limited to the office. People could also use it around the house if it could patch into the POTS network.
Someone could use it around the house while watching TV to alert the wife that a new cold beer is needed.
I can understand combining a phone, camera, and mp3 player since they are all features that fit into a nice small form factor. I think that this will put a lot of the mp3 players and lower-end digital cameras out of buisness. After all, everyone wants a cell phone, why not get an added feature for just a $$ more. Combining a hand-held game however doesn't really fit the profile though, as with the N-Gage.
Sorry to respond to my own post....
But another good example of RSS feeds are all the custom blocks that Slashdot users can add to create their custom page. Go here and add your custom Slashboxes. Those all seem to work off XML/RSS feeds to provide you custom news.
Hey man, that's not off-topic. I was showing an example of how powerful RSS feeds can be. RSS/XML really does have a place in the future to move news across the Internet easily.
Everytime I change jobs or cubes, I always take my own keyboard and mouse with me. A LOT of people I know eat lunch at their desks. Imagine getting a keyboard or mouse after someone who has been eating ribs or hot wings, licking their fingers and continue typing. Nasty!
I thought the noise cancelling headphones worked because they were right against your ears. I wonder how this fan mod works since the speaker is so far away rom your ears. I would suspect that you could be in the position that the fan noise and echo cancelling waves would combine phase and cause even more noise.
This sounds good, until the low-end people realize they are missing out of many of the important graphics that others are seeing. Sure it would be nice for everyone to be able to run the game, but I think most people would want to fully experience the games. I think this idea would fall apart on online multiplayer games. In a FPS, I would prefer to have as much detail as possible. Of course the low-end machine gamers will be shooting at the moving block instead of seeing a fully rendered opponent.
Why must everyone be involved with music these days? Pepsi, Coke, Starbucks....
What's next? I'm going to get a free song with a Happy Meal? I guess there are a lot of execs out there that think if you don't offer music in one way or another, then you must be doomed. I esitmate that in a few years, we will be back to several high quality music choices.

I agree with this post. I started dealsites.net to make a list of all the popular deal sites. With so much advertising spam, I wanted to list only the sites that I felt were repuatable. You can search deals across multiple sites as well as get a list of sites with a similar theme. This is a niche site and isn't complicated.

It seems like cable providers are clamping down on a lot of things. Wiretapping, hidden bandwidth limits, etc...
I'm sure all this can be applied to DSL users too, but I haven't ever seen it mentioned anywhere.
