Ubuntu was designed to be a simplistic distro for those migrating from MSWindows, so I don't find it surprising if they don't bother with any special configurations. However, I don't think this is the case here.
Though, if a hardware manufacturer won't give out specs, then it is not as if anyone in the Linux community can do much about it. If the manufacturer doesn't bother to release specs to Microsoft, and you have to download "some obscure third party hacked Matrox drivers," would you say it was Microsoft's fault? As for Matrox, it seems they don't care about development for Linux on the P650. Read this and suck it. Only Matrox can supply specs or drivers for what it creates. Sometimes people are able to reverse engineer ways to use hardware without specs. Sometimes the manufacturer uses standard interfaces, so drivers can still be made without specs, but who in their right mind would expect someone to magically be able to do this all the time?

In some ways this is a good point. Distros intended to have desktop users should probably include options to use low latency kernels. I don't see how it would be too difficult to include a few kernels compiled for different uses.
High latency (100Hz), no preemption for server / intensive cpu jobs.
300 Hz with Voluntary Kernel Preemption for gamer / media playing. I noticed videos were not jumpy at all with this setting. The default would sometimes cause mplayer to stall for a several frames, then play them all at once. I didn't think about this or consciously notice it on video before I did this, but I really can tell now.
One with the lowest latency setting and complete preemption, etc for more time critical and reaction sensitive work such as music and running robots and such.
All a distro maintainer needs to do is compile them with a few minor option adjustments each time, then either put each kernel in a separate package or just install them all and config the bootloader to run the correct one. Not a huge amount of work, relatively.
As for an app which takes in MIDI and plays sounds, would Zynaddsubfx be it? I seem to remember seeing that feature when playing with it, though I have no MIDI devices, so I couldn't use it or say if it worked...

Actually I wasn't to excited about buying them, but I was sort of pressured (long story), and it was a cheap deal anyway--I think I paid $50 for about 40 or 50 cartridges and two consoles...
If I could run them on an emulator, instead of the system you have to connect to the TV, then I would probably actually play them instead of letting them collect dust. Actually, some of them are N64, and I don't have that console.

It looks like it isn't locked down, so you can write your own games for the device too. (Maybe it'll encourage me to finally work at it.)

All of which will use alsa on any modern Linux system--even oss. Phonon and pulse audio seem to just be the renamed projects for arts and esd.
Jack is a specialized system for professionals. It has cool features such as being able to route sound between lots of applications, but for normal people who just listen to music, watch videos, etc, or even record audio, it isn't needed. A sound engineer may need it, a sound hobbiest may like to play with it, but it is a bit complicated for anyone else.
If you don't like applications who use all those other sound systems, then you will have to complain to the application developers who insist on using them. Or possibly your distro, since many applications who use sound systems often give a complier choice for multiple ones. This isn't a linux problem, this is an application (and possibly distro) problem. Would you complain about mswindows if some application developers used a broken third party sound system?
My linux system has a pretty nice wavetable audio board, but to be honest if I want to play something I just use timidity since I've given up on trying to get the hardware to actually work right.
Lack of programs in linux which use hardware midi support does piss me off, though I don't think I have a computer which will even do fm synthesis midi audio. My main desktop (admittedly a piece of crap) only has a second limited PCM output for "software" based midi, though it isn't needed because alsa emulates as many outputs I want.
My friend's ms windows system won't play midis either. Wmp doesn't seem to do it anymore. I think the problem is midi files are not used much anymore, so almost nobody supports them.
