  1. The winner's design is missing a lot on Slashdot CSS Redesign Winner Announced · · Score: 3, Insightful

When I look at the winning design by Alex Bendiken, I can't find any portion of it that has been done better than Peter's. The nesting menus on the left aren't nearly as smooth, and the text size is the same as the article text, so everything seems to blend together. I commend Alex for attempting to make teal look trendy again, but he has failed. Peter's color choice, although only slightly lighter, makes all the difference. Differentiating between separate sections of the site is extremely easy as well. It is obvious that Peter put a lot of thought into simulating real-world readership when he designed his layout. As far as content delivery goes, Alex's design floats boxes and dumps content in. Peter's is much more polished, with slight accents between copy shifts. This makes the right things stand out where they should. He even included a lovely box for the new tagging system, which is completely absent from Alex's design. The Slashdot people need to create functionality for users to pick their primary content layout from a list. After all, one of the main advantages of CSS is the ability to completely change the design of a site with just one click from the end user. I guess we can't expect much from a judge who's homepage looks like it's frozen in 1993.

  2. Standards anyone? on Unipage - A PDF Alternative? · · Score: 1

I work at a newspaper. PDF is our standard for archiving any editorial, advertorial and copies of our entire paper. It's an integral part of our workflow. I don't know of any newspaper or magazine that DOESN'T use PDF. I'd say it's almost impossible for an alternative format to take over PDF, at least in the print media market. We've had enough trouble with OpenType support on our systems :)

When the 1st gen minis first came out, there were issues with the headphone jack internals snapping off inside the unit. Apple offered to replace the device for anyone who had purchased it up to 6 months after the launch (I believe). The problem wasn't even found until about 3 months after the launch, too!

Why wouldn't they do this with the nano if it REALLY is an issue (which is seems to be)?

  9. Quark DOES have a future, albeit minute... on Quark CEO Abruptly Resigns · · Score: 1

I work for a very large newspaper owned by the Tribune. Our ad builders who create ads in-house, or generate pickups still rely on Quark heavily. Sure, we have InDesign CS2 in here as well, but it all depends on what formats agencies send us. Sometimes Quark is a great alternative to InDesign when it comes to creating a simple EPS. Anyway, I feel Quark will be in the runnings for a little while longer, but InDesign will eat it up eventually :)

Why is Grandma using Linux a better idea than Grandma using Windows? It's not like she's going to be hosting a web server and organizing her cooking recipes in an Oracle database. I think Windows in its current state is much easier to use, and is the most straightforward to learn for ol' Granny. Therefore, it should be the OS of her choice. 2nd place would go to OSX. If you want to make Linux popular, don't introduce it to the largest computing minority first.
