I think geeks have similarities to lawyers because justifying the constant delays of projects to our bosses and customers involves the usage of a great amount of bullshit.
I only use rechargeable batteries. They can be recharged 1000 times before they die, so they are extremely cheaper than the traditional ones.
Also, the ability to use the same battery for years and years makes it a lot more environmentally friendly. Just imagine, for a particular gadget you have, how many times you have thrown batteries away. The environmental cost per Wh is a complete nonsense.
They would have the right to defend themselves if the tablatures were taken from their books and published on the Internet for free. But anybody can just sit down with a guitar and a PC and create a tablature on his own. That's not their concern and they shouldn't claim rights on work that was done by others.
I have used OLGA a lot. The tablatures there are pretty low-quality, but just to get some hints I find them good enough. I have bought score books because I needed high-quality scores and the publishers offer those.
Well, actually committing a crime is illegal, but encouraging the committal of a crime is also illegal. Drawings or computer-made pictures of kiddie porn are to be viewed by highly disturbed people with the potential to actually harm kids. Maybe such images could be banned for these reasons and not violate the right of free-speech.
The whole point of having a society is that people with better luck can compensate for the ones being less lucky, so there is some balance and welfare for everyone. You can't choose your own genes.
Under your point of view, segregation is OK, because the difference between black and white is genetic.
Actually, I think it's the opposite. Radicals attract radicals. I think he will mistreat the Muslims so bad that the Kuran-waving fanatic freaks will gain a lot.
Don't worry, it's all the same bullshit on both sides of the Atlantic. I strongly suspect France will now happily support your president to spend all your hard-earned cash in stupid wars.
I use Linux exclusively at home. My wife, who is very far from being a computer geek, uses it for her everyday tasks, and she almost never notices the difference.
So, for the majority of people, what's so special about Windows that will give them soooo much competitive advantage if they learn it instead of other platform?
I don't think they're on the wagon. There are several reasons for Microsoft hating open source:
Open source encourages open standards and interoperability. Microsoft encourages the monoculture.
Open source levels everybody. The algorithms and methods are available to everyone, you cease to have an advantage based on secrecy and have to compete on the same level as anyone, and be really good to stand out.
Open source frees software. They may like BSD-like licenses because they allow them to steal code, but most of the open-source licenses won't allow that, and it must be really annoying, all that 1st quality, freebie code that they just can't use.
In most countries in the EU, people can say just about anything they want, like in the US. Inciting others to commit crimes is a crime, like in the US.
There are some exceptions, like in France where there are special laws to protect the Jews. You will be arrested in France if you deny that the Holocaust existed.
In some countries, there are even extremist right-wing parties. In my particular country, the fascist ideology is forbidden, because we had a fascist dictatorship for 48 years that ended in '74. But, in my opinion, the prohibition of fascism wouldn't be necessary, because many of the things that constitute fascism would be made crimes by other laws, like race supremacy or encouraging the use of violence. The same for left-wing extremists, and by the way, extremists of any kind.
I don't like the idea of the nazi scum being able to propagate their bullshit freely. But maybe it would be better to just let them speak. They would lose much of their strength if people just ignore them, making them look silly.
About being a bastion of civil rights, your affirmation sounds just like anti-Europe senseless bashing. Just look at the vast majority of countries in the World, and you'll find that the freedom enjoyed in Europe, US, Canada and a few others is not the rule, but the exception. My people only knew what freedom was exactly 33 years and 1 day ago. And it feels fucking gooooood!
Don't worry, here in Europe the Micro$oft brainwash is even stronger. I could tell you the horrors of working in an environment dominated by the M$ drones, but don't have the time now.
Fortunately, I got transfered to a team that works mostly in Unix/Linux and Java. But when I talk to friends of mine who also work in the IT industry I feel like an alien.
I guess it's because the new demands for Vista compatibility. M$ will not allow drivers to be installed if they are not signed. To be signed, they must comply to a lot of DRM shit, and hardware must support it.
Since most of the sheep out there will eventually use Vista, the hardware manufacturers don't have any interest in keeping 2 lines of products so they go happily after the Gates demands.
M$ demands even go further. They demand that the hardware specs be kept secret, to avoid the creation of open-source drivers. In the end, this will hurt us and also the hardware manufacturers, because they will have to support hardware that is more complicated and also they will be even more at the mercy of Micro$oft. But I guess this will only get worse until some governments step in and stop all this monopolistic madness.
Of course they are working. They are educating themselves to become valid citizens in the future. Being educated is hard work, often a lot harder than many of the jobs I know of.
Considering students a burden is a huge mistake that many of our rulers commit often, with harsh consequences.
Here in Europe, most people live in apartments, and the ground stories usually have shops, cafés, small offices and other utilities. One of the things I found really strange in the US is that I had to get into my car to go for a coffe or a beer, to buy groceries, etc., because the residential areas and commercial areas are completely separate and spaced apart. Where I live, I can do most of that by foot.
I loved all the space and quietude in the US suburbs, but there are some disadvantages to that approach, too. Maybe there can be a compromise that allows people to live in peace and quiet without becoming slaves to the automobile.
I saw a mixture of the two approaches in Berlin, Germany, wide streets with lots of trees, short apartment blocks (I hate tall buildings) shops and services nearby AND, last but not least, people riding bikes for short distances. But I'm afraid it only works in flat cities.
That would be incredibly stupid. Cuban cigars are a luxury product worldwide. With the price of a box of cigars, they can buy a lot of food and medicine they couldn't produce themselves.
How can the EU fight Micro$oft if puppet governments like mine (Portugal) make huge deals with the Devil, totally disregarding reports by experts advising free software? As a part of a "technological shock" to "develop the country", the Portuguese government signed an agreement to use Micro$soft software in the government computers for the next years (like we needed more). In exchange, M$ will "offer" free training for thousands of government and private workers, students, unemployed, etc., creating one more generation of locked-in drones.
How come a country with so many economical problems has so much money to give to Micro$oft, while the wealthy countries like Germany and Spain are looking closely at open software? This just makes me sick.

Well, as far as I know, it's not the artists the ones making all the fuss...

"Vista" means "sight", both in Spanish and Portuguese.

That's weird, in my country it's a doctor that makes the ultrasound scan.
So, what you defend is the law of the jungle.

I'm more familiar with the "I can do it in 2 weeks". One of my co-workers got stuck for a year on a project that started with that sentence.

Don't hold your breath. China and India are finally reaching 0 growth, but Africa will be responsible for growth of population in the next decades.

Absolutely right!
How come this is news? Just tell them to fuck off.
That would be incredibly stupid. Cuban cigars are a luxury product worldwide. With the price of a box of cigars, they can buy a lot of food and medicine they couldn't produce themselves.
Here comes the war between privately owned knowledge and shared knowledge, private research and state-funded research, etc.
Beware, you may be called a liberal.
Yeah, chewing the bone and laying back is a good way to stay poor forever.

He would pay for the score. The score is a recording. Just not the kind you're used to.
