Everybody jumped up screaming that they didn't want to pay taxes to treat sick bastards. After all, it's a lot cheaper to spend money on cops, courts, prisons, therapy for abused children, etc. And in the end we will eventually pay therapy for the sick bastards, but only after they have committed the crimes.

    Human stupidity is boundless.

Back to the subject, why not prohibiting all violent movies? After all, they may trigger violent behavior in psycho people. And have you noticed the huge amount of violence in Literature? That bastard Shakespeare has it coming!

Even the governments in the whole globe passively participate in the embargo because they are constantly blackmailed by American government and get chicken. EU countries have businesses with Cuba but the private companies are weary of doing any business because they don't want to piss off the Americans. And our politicians are a bunch of wusses that won't do anything about it. That's how you starve an intelligent, creative, colourful, proud nation.

  17. Re:Question--why do conservatives donate more? on The Drive For Altruism Is Hardwired · · Score: 2, Insightful

IANA Economist but here go my € 0,02.

It's far more efficient to have a properly managed welfare system than to have a system where people are unprotected and dependent on the generosity of the fortunate.

Compare the USA with rich European countries or Canada, which have a welfare system. The poor are much better protected in the latter than the former, despite all the private money that goes to social works. And we are only talking about rich countries.

Altruism is hardwired in the brain most likely because it provides a competitive advantage, evolution made the rest. Being physically inferior to most large animals, the humans had a need to work for each other to survive. Without altruism, we would never have evolved into intelligent beings and have a society, culture and science.

This should be considered attentively by the ones advocating reckless capitalism is the key for progress (in Continental Europe those are called neo-liberals or ultra-liberals). Opposite to the beliefs of the "fashionable" economists, a society based only upon individualism and selfishness is bound to decay into barbarism.

Clarification: The word "liberal" has a different meaning for Anglo-Saxons. In Continental Europe, a liberal is a right-wing guy that advocates free market. Left-wingers here are called "socialists", or the like.

This is total bullshit. Someone hiring illegal immigrants is committing a crime, if the immigrants are in the database, what's the difference?

If the government was serious about stopping immigration they would crack down not on the immigrants but on the companies hiring them, but of course, they don't want to stop their friends from making big bucks. The immigrants wouldn't come if nobody could hire them.

The same hypocrisy happens here in the EU. The right-wing politicians score big time with the public opinion yelling against immigration, but the fact is, the ones that benefit the most from illegally hiring immigrants are the supporters of those parties, I mean corporations. It's not that they hire them directly, but they outsource to small companies employing people with low wages, no labor rights and that can be deported at any time if they become "inconvenient". And, let's face it, they do the dirty jobs that European or American citizens don't want to do.

One thing makes me shiver, if our rulers are so incompetent to stop illegal immigration and (apparently) can't find and punish the companies that break the law by hiring illegal immigrants, how are we supposed to believe they will be more competent at stopping terrorists from entering our countries and do whatever they please? Why is it that this "war on terror" sounds like bullshit to me?
