Linux should take a page from microsoft on this one. They keep repeating over and over, they want ease of use! Everyone in the Linux community has been repeating that very same message!
Take from this article what you will, but be aware that if you try and provide many of the same services that microsoft is providing people won't have the arguement "but I need it to do this", and so, I must say, it should be fairly easy to set up a "central management Linux server" that can manage applications across a multitude of linux servers (That should be a key point in open-source!).
Just my own views.. Now please proceed to start bashing microsoft again..
Honestly, that'd be funny.. I have a sense of humour, and I can take a joke. I guess you missed the jist of that email, RELAX, enjoy life, don't take these things so seriously!
So don't'cha wanna go first, eh? I hain't gonna get upset. You have'ta 'mit d'oh, it r funny that a burglar could sue a home-owner!
Okay, let's start with the first sentence, guess what, I don't receive any porn to my email account, by your logic, that means that it doesn't exist, so what the hell are you talking about?
Second line: Porn is mmmm yummy. If you don't like it, simple stop forwarding those stupid joke/chain letters, stop having your friends send them to you with your name in the cc: list (have them add it as bcc if you just can't miss their humour), stop subscribing to news groups (or setup an email specifically for high risk activities), etc. I could go on, but I'll leave the rest for you to figure out, but FYI, I've sent and received over 30,000 emails in my lifetime, and never once received unsolicited porn. (unfortunate as it may be!)
And your last line, DAMN, say WTF? What the heck are you talking about? As for anonimity if you feel that way, why don't you search/. using your real name instead of coyote oww? Obviously there is some need for anonimity.
HAha, that reminds me of the time, me and four other friends got hammered (we were 15 at the time), and decided it would be funny to go to the science center. I'll never forget that old lady in line turns to us and started yelling "Crack heads!! Get OUT OF HERE! This place is for CHILDREN!", and one guy looks at her all serious "But, I _love_ science! *burp*" then puked all over the floor! Those were the days! (once a geek, always a geek.)
That's really strange, I used to work on a helpdesk and our helpdesk email never received any spam (it was on our homepage as well). Not that I am trying to say your wrong, I totally believe you, I just wonder why your helpdesk (only 5 of you?) and our helpdesk (~30) would be so different?
Even some of the most computer illiterate people I know, know they can create hotmail accounts for free.. I simple told them to set up those accounts and use them for signing up to any newsgroups, chainmail, etc. they want to send (anything at all that's "questionable" in their mind) and that generally helps prevent spam from showing up in their treasured work/isp accounts. Maybe the government should host a website about fighting spam, think that would help fight the problem? I dunno, just trying to throw idea's out!
That's funny because my email account has never received pornographic material, nor anything about a Nigerian scam either. I did receive a couple chain letters (you mentioned you've got 2), but after politely asking my ex-gf to stop sending them, she did, and I never got any others. My current email statistics are: 16,231 Received, 24,321 Sent, quite a large number I'd say. Oh yeah, I've never received stock tips in my email either (except from my broker). So I guess since this is my personal experience it must be the same for everybody right? So why is everyone complaining then? Why was everyone complaining 5 years ago about the amount of junk mail they receive? I mean, you've made it very clear that junk mail, simply doesn't exist?! Maybe because it's moved to electronic medium? In that case, isn't it more environmentally friendly? (I remember that being a huge argument against junk mail myself), so maybe your just anti-environment?
I don't like spam, but people are so damn aggressive and bitchy these days. RELAX!! Learn how to joke around again. Life is short, enjoy it. In Canada we all joke about the constant frivolous lawsuits that happen in the USA (burglar sue's homeowner after falling threw roof), creating laws, and sueing everyone into bankruptcy isn't the answer. You want to set up a spam filter, great! But don't get so worked up because someone wants to make your penis bigger.
There is also a cost to the sender of spam.. It's called bandwidth, time, resources, etc, and it can be just as expensive as hand delievery. Everyone is quoting this 40 cent per package price, but that's meaningless since most of the junkmail I get is hand delievered.. (You pay some kids 5 cent a house to drop it off, for example)..
IMHO spam is very much user fault. Even my specially created spam email accounts get hardly any spam, my house gets hardly any junkmail (except, as I said, the junkmail that's hand-delievered, because obviously, they don't need an address to send it to you). And what about junk phone calls? Aren't they the cheapest medium?? Face it, as long as people subscribe with there ISP email accounts (or work email accounts) to dumb ass promotions, give out their business card to every raffle they see, etc. etc. the problem will never be solved.
Maybe one solution would be whenever you get spam, and your thinking about buying a product, make _SURE_ you go to the competitors that aren't spamming..
And your post suggests a lack of knowledge of history.. Do you think the economy has always been strong? What do you think happened before computers/cars were available, and these jobs that you speak of didn't exist? Your just a troll buddy..
You'll never find it in this economy. What I can suggest is to find something you really ENJOY doing (i.e. programming/games/support/whatever), and work hard to get that job, and then sit tight and wait for the economy to pick up. At least then you'll get some enjoyment out of your job. If possible look for something with a future for moving to a place where you want to go (or pay scale you want to go) so when the economy picks up, at least you'll be first in line..
The arguement can be made that persistent connections are more secure since they don't have to exchange keys as often, and was a secure channel is established it's less likely to get "hi-jacked" although I find these arguements futile. I've never heard of a major attack taking place because of keys being comprimised (although I will admit, theoritically it is possible) there is just too much to it, for it to work (time(outs) being the key factor).
There are other bonuses for always-up from a credit card stand-point, such as response times are quicker, since you don't have to establish a session. Also, maintence is easier, you can access the POS at any time since it is always connected. EOD Polling times are better since you can poll at any time. Email works in real-time, (this is of course for chain-based retailers), trickle polling can be elimated (the most hated polling by any network tech. that has had to deal with it!). Price modifications can be done real-time, customer based loyality programs work _much_ better (I've heard of some dumb-ass programs where you could buy a store card in one store and it won't work in another until the EOD polling has been completed), etc.. I'm sure there are many other reasons I'm missing, but you get the idea..

Why do I hear Tragically Hip playing in the background?? lol..
D&D was the shit, back during the hay-days of BBSing AD&D was played online soo much, what ever happened to that online play? Did FPS kill it? If anyone knows a good website/telnet host that still hosts AD&D games I'd love to hear about it!
I hear next year they will be overclocked the chip in my cell phone so I can emulate pac-man on it, concidentally, pac-man era = good economy, does this mean we should be seeing the NYSE sky-rocketing soon?:P
Umm, I never said it was? (Although if you consider key exchanges, based on VPN software it could be more vulnerable, but I would never try and make that argument.) I said that persistent was used more and more because it was easier (quicker) to diagnose a connection problem, if any node drops, you instantly know there is an issue.
Actually they can tell the temperature of the past 2000-5000 years depending on which scientist you talk too. Tree's have rings which grow with age, and can tell you a lot about the climate of that year, that's one method, another are rocks/lava, the cooling and formation can tell you a lot about the environment and with carbon testing you can tell when the lava formed. There are many other methods as well.
I have no idea about BGP, or the decisions made, but I can speak from the credit card standpoint. It used to be that credit card transactions (not a-sync, TCP only.), would connect, send transaction, wait 10-30 seconds, then disconnect. This has changed over the past 5 years or so for many vendors, who have now switched to an "always up" state. The reason before was bandwidth was an expensive commodity, but with the prices now, it's better to have a connection stay always online so that as soon as there is a connection issue it can be detected by the host server, the thinking there is you can correct many incidents before the customer/store is even aware there is an issue. Security is not a concern for either of the formats as the link must be encrypted, and private.
TTL = Time to Live and yes, it's based on hops, if you take a packet and forward it to a router it has a TTL to get to the next hop, so if you intercept it and start to re-code it, then the TTL would expire. (Unless your data, from Star Trek that is..).

You should be modded up just for your dilbert quote, that was my favourite strip:
"I heard Mauve has more RAM".

That was classic and is 100% right-on my old PHB..

No it's not, I don't manage any routers anymore. :P
Actually many vendors use the internet for communications, by private I meant either a private network or tunneling protocol (VPN).
And if a router is routing traffic between to end points it can't be targeted to close the session? What about a NAT router..? Proxy??
