The largest companies don't want to high full time anymore, so they just go through temp agencies (*COUGH*MICROSOFT*COUGH*). So, once the temp hits a certain date, they're terminated and replaced by another temp (and the original temp is invited back after a certain period of time). So, with this, we just look at the cycle of temps going in/out of the tech industry. These are the "openings", which are just being filled by the same cycle of people.
So, I personally don't follow performance numbers too much these days, but I just went and did a comparison of this "new" system against my current desktop (most components are 4-5 years old inside)
So, the thing barely tops my "ancient" (by today's standards) desktop computer for CPU performance. It has half the RAM (even my old 10" netbook has 8GB DDR3)
Really, I think I'll just label this article as another #Slashvertisement.
My team is spread all over the world. We've managed to do quite well using a combination of Google+ Hangouts (with their various interaction plugins) and Trello.
We use G+ for those real-time drawing and thinking sessions, and then once we get all of our thoughts organized and shared with one another, we push it out to Trello for long term storage and project management tracking.
While everyone else is bitching about ads being displayed (hey, adblock targets the CONTAINER, not the AD itself, so it is still blocked, just like static images were before!)...
I'm extremely THANKFUL for this! Seriously, can we not count the number of end-user exploits that have been transmitted through Flash advertising on some of the worlds largest and most visited web sites!? Adobe and the Flash platform have a horrendously bad reputation in the security market. As someone who has to constantly fix other people's computers, this is a much MUCH welcomed change!!

Those of us interested in DSLR cameras are at the point of diminishing returns. I didn't buy a new DSLR or any new glass in 2014, and hardly got anything new in 2013. Why? Because the longevity of the equipment keeps increasing. I'm currently shooting with a 5D Mark II, and all but the most absolute extreme conditions does this camera perform nearly perfectly. The same goes for the lens collection in my bag, they cover more than 99% of the conditions that I'm shooting it. It is very rare where I'm feeling like the equipment is the limiting factor to the point where I want to invest the money to replace it.
These are tools. They don't follow the same mindset as other consumer electronics that work on annual cycles. When was the last time you thought about replacing your hammer because there is a newer model built with a slightly different design? That's exactly how many of us feel in the photography world right now.
Does this mean the Google Fiber free tier will be upgraded from 5mbps to 25mbps? They were just above the line before, and now well below it. (granted, if I lived in a Google Fiber area, you would bet your ass off I'd have the gigabit connection!)
"One Pop-Down RJ45 Network port" ??? Pop-down? Does that mean it isn't just a normal port you plug in, but is one of those spring loaded ports that pop out? Ya'know, the things horrible notorious for breaking?
I guess it doesn't matter. Googled the chipset, first result: "Realtek r8169 not working in CentOS" - Sounds good to me!
"Three USB 3.0 ports" - I would seriously pay MORE for more USB ports, even if they are 2.0 ports. I hate having to travel with a USB hub just because manufactures don't want to shove out more than 3 ports these days. At least desktops are better in that they generally ship with 10+ now right on the back of the motherboard, before adding the USB headers for front devices.
"802.11n WiFi (ath9k)" - Doesn't say if it is 2.4GHz only or 5GHz compatible, or if it is multi-channel or not.
So, it is a cool concept, I guess, but I think things need to be tweeked a tad to be more universally usable.
DD-WRT that can be installed on the 8MB flash of a desktop router has a web server... if you consider that to be "bloat", then I don't even know what sort of performance/storage requirements you're looking for!
Why does testing NEED to happen on the same system? Why do you need all these high end laptops just to code? How much of your budget are you sinking into this?
For my development studio, we have one single centralized VMWare server that is beefy as fuck for all of our application and database testing. We simply either remote desktop or samba/nfs share into each of our environments that we need to work in.
This keeps things clean and centralized for all of us, allows us to work from ANY machine (such as the 1.6GHz Celeron I'm using to post this right now), and not have to worry a single bit about performance on an individual machine basis. Whenever we need more resources, we simply upgrade the centralized server environment and everyone benefits, without the need to reconfigure each end users machine, or outright replace them (because who the hell has the ability to upgrade laptops these days?)
So does Google Talk and Facebook Messenger and countless other chat systems. Way to go article. Next you'll be telling us that the NSA uses the same operating systems as hackers (OMG LINUXESSES N SHIT)
Sweet! Now I'll need to get SSL keys for all of my web basic administration consoles on my already secured private LAN, or else management will yell at me. This sounds GREAT!

I've worked in some where something as simple as a typo in spelling or grammar is classification for submitting a bug report to developers.
User Interface and User Experience should definitely be classified as bugs.
