Don't forget data in RAM is seldomly compressed. Being in RAM it is in the ideal location to be compressed especially with todays processors the south bus would likely still be just as saturated as RAM -> HDD.
The funny thing is evreyone complains about security but really out of the small fraction of people with the skill/know-how to intercept and decode your message most of them (gov) have given themselves the right to do it. Having a default encryption just makes it easier for "Eve" to get your message cause not only can plain text be ruled out but all other forms of encryption as well. Your message could be brute forced over a bot-net in no time. It's kinda like making an entrance secure by making a massive steel door with a moat around it but a single key lock and no guards. Once the lock is picked its all free game.
Having a variety of encryptions even if some are weak will add much more time before a message is decoded, but only more time that is all. As always if the right person wants your data and your not prepared for them, well its gone. But making sure that evrey one in the country / world has the locks made from the same smith is not the best way to go.
As far as the next big thing I think its not going to change until we do. Communication between humans has always been saught after and evrey way we can communicate in our evreyday life so far has been transposed to an "over the wire" equivalent. An example of this is voice(talking), text(short one sided thoughts) and video (voice inflections + body language). When either these converge (single pictures that convey a message) or lead us to another form of mutual understanding we are just working on the bare principals for now.
In the instance of VOIP in Canada the regulatory board CRTC made manditory pricing schemes because of companies like Bell Canada would be able to offer the service at such low price (introductory of course) as well as brand recodnition they would be able wipe out customers relation with other providers then adjust prices accordingly.
Now keeping in mind VOIP is a service and not a physical product so these events are not completely parallel but in terms of "preditory pricing" being laughable, its not really.
But wouldn't AMD be taking Intel's only real ally? With ATI out of the picture would Nvidia play nice with Intel?
I think the next generation would be a CPU + GPU kinda like FPU's of the 90's. Killing the entire bus would offer amazing performance but it also involves a very close partnership. Now that GPU's are really gaining popularity and die size is really small/efficient maybe getting rid of the Graphics Card as we know it would be benificial from a power consumption point of view as well?
The one reason I think Google is where they are to day is because they are able to see one point in all the chaos that we call the internet. There is a real want behind evrey search. What we have to be willing to accept is that possibly what you call "dogs" is something we may in a way desire. It may keep us watching or keep our eyes open.
As evreything evolves it comes down to intensions. Does the guy on the corner really want you to believe it is a real Rollex watch or will he tell you its a Rolodex watch?
Either way as most geeks know, its called a database we can easily blackball anyone we want really.
PS. No little old ladys were harmed or robbed in the making of this post....
The funny thing is the school employees are just using the possibility that the individual child may be attending their school to use that to further punishment to the child. If the child does something like you mention according to this the school will report this to the parents, which is not really a bad thing, but should the school have any other part in the matter? Should they be able to punish the child at thier own descression? Example being, on his blog Johnny recalls a time where he carved his name in a public bench, the school get the tip and lets the parents know. Being a public bench does the school being involved have the right to apply policies and procedures against Johnny? Should they(the school) be responsible for ensuring or suggesting the parents carry out a predetermined course of action?
Now that they are a whisle blower are they taking on the responsibility of policing? How about if an action is brought to their attention and swept under the rug so-to-speak and the kid runs through the school with a sub machine gun a week later?
All I am trying to say is you cannot be a gate keeper in any sence unless you can account for evreything that passes through it, watching a child getting punsihed for a funny picture of their teacher or a silly comment about another kid would be quite sad indeed.
It should be manditory to install their own software. Damn man they work on the OS for a living, a majority will touch all aspects of the OS evrey day. What if you worked for a web design firm but werent allowed to view the JavaScript in it? Would that make sence to you?
If they did it would be just as a joke or a publiciy stunt anyway, with the brain power they employ, they would come up with an exploit to get them access just as quick as entering the admin pass. Like common it is Windows...
Why not blame the receptionist for wasted hours of work? One could argue the temp's intentions were to kill a bit of time or tap their foot while sorting files, likely did not know about malicious software being installed. The company that sold the cd (Sony) did know about the software its intension. Why not blame/charge the temp for possibly violating company policies and Sony for cleaning the computer? Many companies and IT wouldn't really consider playing a CD a mass grievance as most audio cd's are playable at the hardware level and take up minimal system resources. The idea of using the little guy as a scape goat doesn't appeal to me personally, YMMV and each party if is going to be put on the rack then they should be responsible for their contribution.
Then again if I sent you a WMF while the sploit was around and you viewed it in your web browser what part of the situation should you be accountable for?
Thats actually a good idea. Imagine the audience anyone could capture just by walking down the street. You could advertise your company and of course there will be those who will complain about other companies. But the coolest thing is you are almost gaurenteed a steady audience (of course some areas will be monitored more closely then others by the public).
You don't like the way your phone carrier treated you? Walk down the street with a big sign showing your opinion. Maybe it will be a bit diffrent then evreyone expected...
Geeze buddy its a game. When you drop a wired controller what does it do laying there that is intended? Have you passed boards or cleared levels by dropping a wired controller?
I don't see the big deal here. The reason why evreyone hasn't switched already is because of legacy hardware (POTS). If VOIP gets big then evreyone will be using IP which likely means it will be sent via a common network (umm INet). People don't use Google Talk beause you can't call *anyone* for free. Once enough people learn to use IP services and impliment it in their homes (router, handsets) then your provider is as simple as a menu selection, eventually completely free services will emerge. WIFI cell phones, PDA's, home phones, have all the same benifits, they don't rely on ma Bell, et al to run them. Now maybe evreyone will run them...
True, you could set up a phoney Mic driver that encrypts the actual audio and sends it out as wav format(or whatever) client would strip the headders and unencrypt using key that could be send via IM or other client - server negotiation. This way everything that is overheard is really just noise. Possibly even come up with an encryption followed by an algorythim that would make it sound like regular audible sounds (speach, music, telemarketing). Again the ease-dropping still occurs but either noise occurs with encryption or possibly SPAM like conversation is sent where data is manipulated to seem like pre-set conversations if possible. Higly compressable matrix's would be a good solution. To break it down VOIP is just sending 1's and 0's like evreything else as long as there is a constant agreement between both sides it will work. I guess we just have to do it...
I noticed headding was "build your own computer counter". Could it be there will be people there to assemble the system as you pick out the parts. It really wouldn't be that difficult, all the Motherboards could be pre-mounted on a platter which could be easily attached to the outer casing or an internal frame of course. You point out what you want, almost like ordering a cheeseburger. Most semi-knowlegeable know that each part actually installs very quickly and easily if the parts are known. Laptops are tricky of course, but Walmart's pull could possibly make a universal body or frame that all manufacturers could base a design.
Maybe Wallmart could do for hardware what OSS is doing for software?
I think the most valuable asset is the ability to write code that runs on any system. Sun's Java language started the ideal, now if any programming language could be compiled to speak 'Java' then regardless of the syntax it would run on the machine with a JVM. This would truly be write once run anywhere.
Common do you really think you could take over a company and all of the previous owners clients will be magically kissing *your* ass.
It's like going for computer help to the guy down the street after your longtime buddy moves out, you will approach with caution. I think IBM has prepared Lenovo for this and don't think they will give up now.
They have the task of not only proving they are just as good but better, tech support, quality, benchmarks, tech review mags/sites. This may take a while but if they come in strong and have equipment that can challenge PowerBooks, et al then the company will do very well in the next lets say 5 years.
I don't see why evrey one here is up in arms that because a multimillion dollar company changed hands and we are not knocking down the new guys door in droves. Like you don't expect people to have a little reserve especially since in the west we never really had a direct interaction with the east. Most of our products are assembled and made in Asia but how many have ever approached that same company with questions and requests? Sure people are weary but it is up to Lenovo to overcome that, if they do I think it will give the west an insight into their culture and will help China to lose some of the stigma that has affected the country overall maybe even open the door for other companies getting into the west.
One thing that always gets me is that they (large companies) want some legal backdoor into your computer.
I think more people would be comfortable with it if there was a client installed that monitored the network for something comprable to Windows Update(tm) where it would let you know something is going on that is effecting the network and give you the tools (patch, instructions, etc) to get it fixed. All the while leaving your system online. As a choice the ISP could block traffic associated with the virus, malware, spyware, et al, or just slow it down.
The only thing I can think of that would make companies want to fix your problems for you and without you knowing is that they can charge for such a service and really as much as they want or when they want, because you don't know. Then it becomes a monthly charge because people will inevitably get a massive bill for all the remote fixing that went on. The thing that really sucks is that it will be illegal to refuse it, therefore it will be almost manditory to have a firewall, antivirus/spyware to offset the cost.
Our defense contractors can stay fed by selling new shit to our military, while unloading old technology on other nations. There's plenty of wars out there to keep all of them rich; there's no requirememnt to start new ones.
You believe that eh? It's like saying WallMart doesn't need to make anymore money they have enough already. Microsoft doesn't need any more advertising their market is big enough. Pull your head out of your ass man, when you have this much money it's no longer about having enough money to afford an object of your chosing, do you think these guys are saving up for a bigger pool in their backyard? If they can make more they will do evreything they can to make that happen.
field-testing new soldiers" is rather pointless, as human nature rarely changes. Training is standardized and does not decrease in effectivness. Therefore the only thing to be gained by sending soldiers to war is the development of new tactics and doctrine. However, those things tend to change from conflict to conflict anyway, so starting wars just to develop new tactics is also rather pointless.
You really have your head up your ass on this one, but let me break it down for you anyway. A Pitbull is a type of dog, this dog is known to be agressive by nature and used in dog-fights around the world. Now you may think that these people just get a dog drop it in a ring with another and let em go? No. They beat it, make it angry, provoke it, even after all this it's still not ready you know what they do? They take a little fluffy puppy and make the pitbull rip it apart, now it has the taste of blood and the confidence to kill. Now it makes the first move, now it is battle-hardened, blood and killing no longer scares it or slows it down it just wants more. This is what is happening in Iraq a country with millions of active soilders being told how wars are fought, shooting rounds of ammo in preperation for the one that will kill the other guy. After a while no amount of screaming or preperation can improve their skills as killers they have to actually kill 'a fluffy little dog'. A war they cannot lose a foe that cannot bring the wind out of their sails. They have to see their friends die as well as their enemies and the innocent. Now they go back to the millions and become heros and bring the millions of unready up to a new level, get them frothing at the mouth just waiting for 'fluffy' to rear their head up again. Now have a real core to your army. If you think uncle Sam can pick your scrawny, pale ass give him a gun and your gonna let the frags go like Quake, you would likely shit yourself before you got your first shot off and possibly go into shock when you get real brains splattered all over you.
Now I guess you think you know something really well but look over what was just said....
Why is it evrey time MS comes up with something potientally cool it just doesn't seem as cool once I see it? I mean I downloaded XGL and thought it was awesome, rough but awesome. Now when I see screen shots of diagonal windows stacked and rough pixelated edges I just get dissapointed and move on....
This is all good with todays horsepower but what kind of company is going to upgrade a system like this in the famous 18 month period.
If Mores law holds true Suns revenue will half evrey 18 months, so the question is, is this permanent? Will they find new things to burn clocks? Or will they try to corner the market and still try to charge $1 according to a 2GHz machine.
The only way I could see this working is if they charge by clock rather than time and charge very little, this way you pay the same amount in 3 years but you get the result in 1/4 the time.
How about a punchcard? A manual rig can be easily set up, put your vote card on the machine and press the button (mechanical?) each valid choice has a valid shape cut out, the pattern removed from the card is dynamic and can change (size, rotation) according to time lets say. Each card would be subtily diffrent that can be counted by hand but since the orientation is diffrent it can be tracked to the time and poling area it was made, any 2 the same would be invaid. And it would still be easy to make a scantron like system to automatically count the ballots. Heck with this you could even double the cards giving a reciept to the voter as no 2 identical votes will be counted evreyone goes home happy. Thats about as open and failsafe as it gets, Eh?
Don't forget data in RAM is seldomly compressed. Being in RAM it is in the ideal location to be compressed especially with todays processors the south bus would likely still be just as saturated as RAM -> HDD.

Keep up the good work!!!
I wonder if there is more money to be made in the DRM and quality or the cost of the machine required to transcode it?

Did it really matter who was voted for ?
