    Sniff sniff ...

    Can any one here smell fear?

    Billy starts to get all emotional about IE exploits, loosing business to open source and now starts to make "leader type" predictions 1Bilion desktops / DVD get old etc.
    These are statements that we normally hear from polititions in hopes of re-election. Is he counting him self out already? Is he really that scared? Why is it that all he does is *talk* but never *DO* anything?

    As we already probably know if M$ really did have any hard advantage other than contracts for people to use thier product then we would not hear all the whining and complaining that they are finding that not only is their ship sprung a leak but it is dissapearing as well.

    Well Billy evrey CEO / exec already sees what is going on it's time to move on buddy or actually DO something!!

    Lets try to take it for granted that Microsoft is a multi-billion dollar company and is not as stupid as all foretell them to be. Now Explorer is as possibly entrenched into the OS as they could possibly get it. Now as many posting here will know an OS does not REQUIRE a browser being stuck into it it is a design Microsoft descided would be best for them. Now this also stops you from using the hardware you purchaced properly when IE uses 100% CPU utilization and over 256MB resource while its chasing its tail. After a while you might say I wanna toss it completely. But can you really? They make it so complicated and even once its gone there is no guarentee that you will not be hounded by problems. If they believe that IE is so modular why is it you cant select to remove or uninstall from a menu *ANYWHERE* in the OS? If it is truely so innovative and superior I will try something else see how wrong I was and call the geek down the street to get it back.

    Customers as a whole feel that when purchasing a product from a large reputable company that they are getting the best and that the side effects of viruses / malware / popups etc are just an unavoidable circumstance.

    Now instep with the vehicle metaphors if you spent $30K on a new car that you had to change the tires evrey 10KM beacause of problems with the car, but you didn't mind because evreyone else is changing their tires right beside you. Now some geek with a new type of car flys by you while you get the tire iron out you say why, they tell you it will cost you more and you have to be a mechanic to use it any way and only terrorists use cars that are not made by Microsoft anyway ;)

    Thats all it was. I actually saw the movie last night and thats what it was all about. Do I like Bush? No. Do I think that Bush was responsible for all the stuff Moore said he had the ability to partake in? No. One though he did use factual events and brought to light front and centre the corrupt in the US gov. Maybe it was Bush but I chose to belive that Bush is an iddiot and a puppet that was hand picked to take the fall of descisions of others. I don't even think that Bush can tie his shoes with out giving him self 10 minuites of practice each morning. But then again it was a good film and I found very thought provoking and for once worth the money I paid for it.

    It's probably is just me but a movie or display like this that challenges the gov. that it does is a welcome change and I hope to see more movies like it. Not necessarily from Moore but anyone who has an opinion so we may have the chance to make our own.

    Do you think that maybe M$ has been weary of doing anything major because if they break compatibility then all those developers that have to goto the drawing board might jump ship to avoid huge API licencing costs?
    Maybe even go Open Source?
    Don't forget M$ is making money comming and going. From those who buy the OS and those who are 'privilaged' to write anything more extensible then solitaire. I would drop VB for Java / C / Perl etc any day and have 100x more control and knowledge what ERROR#ABC123 is actually caused by then trudging through a knowlege base to find that you don't have access to the API that caused the problem.

    Just a thought....

  8. Always keep your copy of XP uptodate! on How To Avoid Viruses At Windows Install Time? · · Score: 1
    • Copy the entire "I386" to a local directory
    • download the updates via this link Network Install
    • "Slipstream" the service pack to your local copy
    • Dump it onto a CD with a bootable image that you make so the XP install will boot right
    OR

    Get a copy of the 911 CD compiler (Linux based!!) to make an image and will even start you off with install scripts that will give you hands off operation!

    PS The 911 CD will ask you for your info (Computer name, Key, etc before the install all you have to do is type it in and your ready to go!

    Really?? lets look at programming shall we...
    You sit at your computer and your company hires you to write a new version of notepad as you are just a peon and realy have no insite or creativity you add a button or key combo that would allow you to save and style with out using the mouse, that is not creativity that is pretty much blue collar work.

    Now you have some one who is working on their own and come a truely innovative idea that *no one* before has thought/implimented/produced does that mean because it should be impossible for this person to copyright the work. Just because *NOW* you see it you can try to mimic it that it makes this one persons contribution any less spectacular?

    Well sir you are NOT an artist a programmer OR someone who should be determining the rights of others

    Can some one please explain one thing... Most of these viruses / malware etc are based on windows bugs which we all know take a while to release. So will M$ Antivirus release an update for a problem that should just be patched?
    Sounds like a lot of tail chasing to me and of course in any corp- passing the buck will be the soup du jour.
    This is perfect timing for me to finally switch completely to a linux based pc and watch all you win32 bums suffer. You thought that it was tough getting a straight answer out of tech support now???

    That Microsoft is compiling an even bigger list, legal one at that too. This list will show evrey one who has ever written "Hello World" about innovation. From now on *no one* will be able to make the same mistakes as M$ or well they will sue you.

    The great thing about this is that it will not stop people from coding or collaborating on a job it will just make evreyone aware of what they can't do and do something else. With as far as we've come do we really want to reinvent the icon and desktop. Not really. Slowly but surely M$ doesn't even realize what they are doing. The feel they are "protecting" their "investments" but what they are really doing is influencing something people have wanted since they mastered the SINGLE click ;)

    This does sound like it would make sence, we all hate kiddy porn right? But wait we hate kiddy porn because it is wrong, right? Well then if we can block 1 wrong thing then why not block other "wrong" sites, or sites they can prove someone thinks is wrong. For this type of thing I am leaning more and more towards a public consensus. If evreyone had an obligation to respong to an email with a simple yes or no answer to see how it would effect thier customer base then if warez or other is deemed that the majority do not want it then so be it. They should be able to vote and change thier minds at anytime. When ever the consensus reaches a predetermined point the policies change.

    Now don't get me wrong some things just aren't voted on like cost to access the service billing methods supported by the provider, things like that if you dont like go to the "other guys" but for access I feel that you should be able come to a conclusion amongst your peers who are all using the same connection. Or is that a bad thing?

    I'm not saying the procedure is flawed one way or the other but I am saying in the long run it won't work, lets for a minuite think how that will effect us.

    From now on no one will die. Those who are in power will stay in power those who control will remain in control, no new ideas more violence as the only way new people can get heard or positions is by brutally murdering those above them. Want your kids to get a job and be successfull? How? You want a raise? How? As people get older they retire to make room for the new but now they will be able to work for ever. How are people going to move up, get fired? Then what once all the jobs are taken, they are all gone.

    And if you don't have a job you will unemployed for life most likely you won't be able to commit suicide because they will just make you a new wrist / heart/ neck... whatever and throw you back on the streets.

    You may have the choice to choose wheather you want to do this or not but who will?

    You can try to mess with mother nature as much as you want but just as physists must judge thier actions with great care so they dont go splitting atoms in public places for kicks because they know that the consequences no matter how good they seem on paper may really fuck things up. We are scared of death that is pretty relevant beacause of this type of research but we must also evaluate the consequence of avoiding it as well.

    How about using the firmware to make phony devices? About a week after MS launches the latest DRM based firmware its habbits and procedures *will* be cracked. One could then mimick that behaviour to circumvent authentication and possibly crack the system.

    One could get at the EFI by "booting" off a USB etc device and then passing it off to the MBR. That would circumvent the DMCA(sp?)? Hope they realize that before it gets launched!

    I think that suits like this are good.

    Only for the reason that the lower end of the gene pool gets spotted and we as a society can adjust. Those of use that have taken a class or gone to school (most of us) basicly understand that the purpose of taking the courses / classes etc is so that the teacher / prof / school can certify that we know what they have taught us to a percentage degree (90%,50%).

    This kid is freely admiting that he has done nothing and has been avoiding the ciriculum since day 1? Will that make his future employers more trusing in thier descision to hire him?

    If I was able to I would allow him back into the course on the one condition that on his transscript it would show that he has actively plagerized and admited to it. Let him pay for the remainder of his courses. Thank him for bringing it to thier attention and send him into the world with his stupidity following him all the way.

    The one question I have is, using all the resources in the world can an operating system be written an run that is not vulnerable to viruses? Now I do seriously mean *all* the resources, ie unlimited manpower/budget/R&D etc.

    If not then we will be putting up with this for ever so we mine as well start putting them away now. Other wise I would feel that it would be the responsibility of the manufacturer and let them keep trying to put a square peg into a round hole till they get it right.

    In that sence I think the people who write viruses should be paid for their work because they are now helping us to innovate and refine our code. As for all us admins, this is what we are paid for get over it, if some loud mouth kid didnt send out "Supper l337 killer" version 1.0 some one with a brain would do it and screw us royally with out anyone knowing.

    It sounds like they want something where they will just send you a couple of scraps into a machine and evreything is typed up for them (no secretary needed) Use one of the profs as a test pilot that seems cool and see if you can get in with the tech spirit and get evreything inputed directly onto touch scree / stylus set up on his desk??

    This will also be able to show him upfront what the system can and can't be recognized and can be fixed immediately or before he descided to "submit" the page into the main file system / backup.

    It would take up a little more time if you want to do it right and write a program from scratch (get marks for it?) but a good idea would to get both sides to come to a happy medium (prof vs computer) make it so it weens him from using over exaggerated bad penmanship and put in a couple of hours desiging a descent ui for formulas that are variable (lambda, pi etc) friendly and will understand on which side of the divisor evreything belongs. It would be even kinda cool if it could solve the probs too, as it went along.

    Because I am not sure what program you are in this may/may not be feasible.

    an alternative would be to ask your profs if they buddy with the math/comp si profs and donate some eager brains for possible standings within the course ;) that way no money and the profs are working you. They will like your idea !!

    Well depending on your budget and how quick you want this over with you can call the cell carriers in your area and as an employee of one myself I know that they would love to talk to you. Call around and see what solutions they have it could be having cell phones connected to a router for service but i am pretty sure you could squeeze out a couple Mb/s. I'm not sure what youre intentions are (ie bandwidth required) but if you want happy campers a caching proxy mite be worth reading up on ;)

    Where is this man/woman that Linus has wronged? Why has this person not found them to dispute their stolen property? Why is it that since day one it has been availible to all to review and dissect why has that person not realized the similarity from thier work to Linux? Even in grade 9 english classes when preparing a paper that would challenge current views you are required to back up your sources. Or did they just rent this guy from the National Enquirer?

    How do you rate computers? by how much they can pull?

    All joking aside these computers have been pulled together in such a tight system that they can make almost 90% effiency. All that it takes once they get to 100% is money to throw at it.

    Oh ya and if a room full of chevettes were cabled up and were set to tow your corvette it would get draged along way before they felt the drag ;)

    This works on all kids of levels... The whole idea of the X-Box is to let you play over priced games. Now not only can we still play the over priced games but we can also use it as a PC with good graphics hardware for the low low price of $150USD (found from a selection of online stores), uses your TV as a monitor whole bunch of generic ports and your ready to rock. Looks nicer then a vanilla box and cheaper than AlianWare. How can anyone go wrong?
