  1. Re:obl. privacy concern. on From Archive.org, Free Multimedia Hosting for Life · · Score: 3, Insightful

That would suck, but not for privacy reasons. When you put your stuff up there, it's for everyone to see, anyway - doesn't get any less private than that.

  2. Only government work... on FBI's New Info-Sharing Software Project Fails · · Score: 1

The prototype's main feature allows users to prepare documents and forward them in a usable form. Eventually, the FBI expects to have software with added features for managing records, evidence and other documents, along with the ability for users to collaborate on documents and share information online.

Only the government could spend half a billion on that, and still not have it work...The article has limited detail about the software, but I can't see how it could possibly warrant such a development cost.

I don't have any more money for you, and if you make me start spending it on new hardware for your ridiculous new standards, then I won't have any left to buy your IP with.

Maybe I lose a CD I like, and I want to hear it again. Or maybe I buy a CD with copy protection on it but I want to listen to it on my MP3 player (especially since the old stereo I have cannot play most copy protected CDs). Perhaps I found a great album on vinyl, but I have no means of converting it to digital format. 99% of the time that's why I'm downloading music from a P2P network. IANAL, and I don't know what the legal implications of that are. But let's talk in ethical terms: I think very few people would disagree that morally, what I'm doing is perfectly fine - I just want to listen to the music I paid for, and I want to listen to it my way. So, morally, is it right for them to infect peoples' computers when, morally, those people aren't necessarily doing anything wrong?

  6. Re:You think the US laws are stupid?? on Guy Game Results in Lawsuits and Injunction · · Score: 2, Insightful

Actually, you're mistaken. Our laws are less consistent. In my home state, Pennsylvania, it would be legal for me (as an 18 year old) to have sex with a 16 year old girl, but not to photograph her. In the state where I go to school, New York, it's illegal for me to have sex with an 18 year old. In some places it's legal to look at pornography at 18, in others not until you're 21. Everything varies from state to state.

That Google was censoring important search results that should indisputably be in the public domain was a pretty bold assertion to make. It deserved to be corrected immediately where everyone could see it. Of course, as they say, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure - hey editors, why don't you just lay off the sensationalism and avoid making wild accusations on weak premises?

  11. Re:isnt there something deeply ironic on IGDA Indie SIG To Aid Independent Developer · · Score: 1, Informative

No, there really isn't. This isn't even a case of RTFA, just RTFDescription - indie just means self-published. The product is games that aren't swayed by the same influences as commercial ones, which allows them to be experimental and to address niches that mainstream games ignore (see: Uplink). The purpose of this organization is to provide indie developers with resources that will help them create quality games - it doesn't strip them of their creative independence.

  15. B is supposed to be a full semester? on First Java AP Computer Science Exam Complete · · Score: 0

I took the AB version - it wasn't very difficult. What struck me as really funny was that, although the "B" part is supposed to be a full semester of class, it was very little - we had to know how to "design" classes, and a very small amount of DS&A (hash tables, binary trees, and qsort, but not a 2-3-4 tree, graph, or path-finding algorithm to be found). According to the policy of the school that I'm going to I'll be able to skip a year of intro CS courses if I get a 5, but I'll want to check the curriculum and make sure the AP was actually as comprehensive as it's supposed to be before jumping ahead.

Not really. You're suggesting that the industry will actually be able to free its products of security holes. I contest that software will always have security problems, hackers will always find exploits.

Extending the liability of software companies wouldn't result in a couple of quick lawsuits and then "Gee, you know, we've really been slacking off, let's just be perfect so this doesn't happen again." Instead, it would open up a steady and continuous stream of lawsuits (especially in such a litigious nation), and though I'm sure MS would be able to take a hit to its profits, its smaller competitors would most probably not.
