I recently built a system for the kids to use. It was going to be mainly used for web browsing, email, dvd playback and word processing (homework).
I get most of my components from ebuyer and I originally wanted a fairly inexpensive Athlon XP2500+ cpu. However, as I gradually put the separate items into the cart, the damn XP2500 went out of stock, and the higher rated chips cost more than I wanted to spend.
So reluctantly, I added a 2500 sempron instead, while worrying about the reduced onboard cache (256 instead of 512k )
I built the system, and installed SUSE 9.1 via an FTP install.

Well, the damn thing was slow as f**k. The browser kept hanging (firefox) and the screen refresh was slow and the whole system felt bad. Admittedly, I am using the onboard graphics on the MSI micro atx mboard, but even so, it was sharing 64MB ram of the 512 available.
    Seriously not impressed !

Anyway, as a last resort, I tried installing FC2 instead of SUSE yesterday. What a difference !

The systems feels right now, no problems with the browser and the systems responds as it should for its capabilities. I guess what I'm saying is, that unless you want a dedicated fps gaming machine then the semprons are fine. And I didn't even use the fastest available chip. 15. Cue the BBC on EFF Begins Digital Television Liberation Project · · Score: 1

As you may or may not know, in the UK we have a thing called a "TV Licence". This currently costs around 120 UKP per year, and it 'allows' you to have television receiving equipment on your property, and certain portable devices (assuming they are not being used at the same time as the fixed devices).

This "TV Licence" is ostensibly needed to pay for the upkeep of the BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation). There are no adverts* on the BBC channels, and you are 'free' to watch any BBC channel.

However, if you do not watch BBC channels at all, just the commercially funded channels, you still require the "TV Licence". If you do not watch terrestrial tv at all, but have cable or satellite (which you must pay the provider for directly) then you STILL need a "TV Licence" !

My irritation at this state of affairs has been growing for some time, especially, as the BBC raises funds by selling its programming to commercial companies, who use it on satellite/cable and non-BBC channels. I am fed up with seeing BBC made programs on Discovery Channel, (it seems I have paid twice). The BBC also has a thriving DVD/Video market running, which further reduces the need for a "TV Licence".

BTW, the "TV Licence" is enforcable by law, with a penalty of 1000 UKP, for non-compliance, or jail !

This really pisses me off, when we get the same recycled crap, charged for twice, and then threatened with jail if we don't comply.

The reason this is so close to my mind at the moment, is I got an ominous letter last week saying : To the current occupier, we see you don't have a "TV Licence", either get one or we'll be round and then you'll be for it ! (It all works off post/zip codes, so if your address doesn't register as having a "TV Licence", whether you have a tv or not, you get a letter. Oh, and they do come round to check. Where was I ? Oh yeah, the reason this is so close to my mind is that I had to get a "TV Licence" pretty quick, before they came round, and found all the DVD rips lining the walls, with empty cases under the bed, and various ripping utils filling the computer !

Extortion I call it ! It's not like I watch the damn tv, its not even connected to power, as I have a tv card in the pc which I use to record F1.

I'm don't see why the music industry should be protected from natural evolution by the law. So what if they lose money and go broke ?

There was a thing called the dotcom boom a little while ago, lots of computer techs and businesses went under, but nobody passed a law demanding that we all had to buy their products to keep them afloat. Here in the UK, we used to have miners, and weavers and all sorts of other craftsmen. They are mostly gone now, and people have moved into other areas.

I respect musicians who get out on the road and entertain people, which is their primary function, not to spend 3 years in a studio on a piece of crap, then expect the world to pay for it for ever. How much is a recording artist worth in real terms anyway ? Certainly not the millions they currently end up with.

It is extremely arrogant of us to expect that we can somehow influence the climate of something as massive and well established as a planet, in a little over 200 years.
As mentioned in other posts, the area around the Tigris / Euphrates used to be very fertile, in fact it was the birthplace of civilisation.
I see no problem with trying to understand the processes going on with climate change, but take issue with the disaster scenario being promulgated. We are not radically changing the climate and we can not stop climate change.

As an aside, which method of energy production is more environmentally sound ?

b)Creating energy from atoms using a process that is not even found naturally in stars ?

If nuclear fission was the natural way of energy production, then why aren't there natural processes using it. Fire is used in nature in lots of ways. Something the Australians have learned over the years, and now they understand that to prevent a natural process from occurring, only leads to problems when there is a huge shift back towards the norm later. (natural outback fires clear undergrowth on a regular basis, meaning there are regular small fires. Preventing those fires from happening leads to a build up of undergrowth then huge fires later to restore the balance)

Its about time we started researching in terms of how nature intends to do things instead of how we expect nature to do things our way, then call it a disaster when we realise its not playing to our gameplan.

I am constantly amazed that we are more concerned with reducing CO2 emmisions from cars / industry ,yet we allow the Amazon rainforest to be burned down, which both reduces natural CO2 uptake and creates more CO2, while reducing the output of oxygen !
The governments are making stupid decisions everywhere you look. I had first hand experience of the British environment agency, while involved in the "capping" of a full rubbish tip. Great amounts of time and expense were involved in covering the thing over with plastic sheeting and clay liners in order to ensure that nothing could escape to the surface. Err, excuse me, what about the stuff going through the subsoil and into water supplies. The site concerned was an old quarry, that was filled with rubbish in approx 20 years. There are far older rubbish disposal sites that burn the trash and are only a few inches deep in ash. I realise that we can't go burning all refuse, like plastics etc, but that is mainly due to the effect on the breathable atmosphere. The burning in and of itself is not the problem.
I could go on but IANAC.
