Nice try shifting the argument there. What strikes me, is the similarity to the Matrix argument. What use is a developer friendly SDK, if you are prevented from running the code on the device you're writing for ? Sure, $99 (+ Mac) doesn't sound much, but the issue is not money, it's access to the networking api for the apps you want to create. I don't care how fucking bling and shiny the SDK is if I can only write hello world (locally) using it. Yet again, form over function for apple.
And from a recent discussion about the differences between US and European work practices, it was generally agreed that the Europeans get the same amount of work done in 8 hours, that it takes the US 10 hours to do. Yet the US employees slack off while they're at work and then bitch about working long hours. Not to mention the cost of paying for all the infrastructure while the employees are slacking off. Not just the net, but AC, maintenance, sewerage, lighting etc. Business exists to make money, not provide a social club with optional work. You get lunch breaks, use them to buy your gifts online or browse slashdot. Don't expect the employer to pick up the tab. Just another sign of the entitlement society.
Android is not "a phone" it is the OS.
If it has bluetooth, why do you need a headphone jack ?
Who said it can't play movies ? All I saw was can't record video (yet).
Why can't it tether ?
Why is is locked to a carrier (like the iphone) ?
Because the company making the phone had to release it that way. Nothing to do with Android. Blame the carrier for that.
Apple has tried to be clever with the iphone, making a smartphone appear to be a PDA. The crucial word is appear. It still lags a decent PDA by miles. Often compared against windows mobile (which has 2 flavours, PDA and smartphone) it still does not allow the owners of the device to add their own programs, or even change provider. I am not an MS apologist, but the free market for apps is massive and open for WM, while the apple smartphone is locked down and proprietary. Maybe looks aren't everything. Just because the iphone is thin, it doesn't have less surface area. I suspect the whole iphone craze (for that is what it is) is due to the damn accelerometer, which is a part costing pennies. And the iphone has few hardware buttons, why ? How is that improving accessibility. You need two hands to operate it. My pda with hardware buttons works with my eyes shut. The buttons have marks to distinguish them and don't take power to exist. Apple has gone for form over function, that is why it is locked. They decide what you can do with it, and that's final. Christ you even have to activate the damn thing before you can use it. With my pda, all I did was charge it up and put in my sim card - done. I've had GPS, google maps, gmail, push email, a replaceable battery, voice activation of calls AND apps, stereo bluetooth, bluetooth networking, WiFi , 3G connection AND the ability to program it for free for 2 years now. It amuses me when people see it and ask me if it's one of those new iphone thingies. No, I reply - it's better ! I have access to the entire WM networking stack and tethering is between me and my provider, the phone does what I say, not what apple thinks is good for their business. The more I see of apple, the more they remind me of Jack in Fight Club. You must not talk about it and they are just as delusional.
Copyright is not a criminal matter, the record labels do not have their own police force or police powers. They bring a private prosecution to defend private "property". It is not the governments job to actively seek out and defend against infringements on private property. Think about trespass. Yes it is illegal to trespass on anothers property, but you don't expect the police to actively seek out trespassers. That is the job of the landowner, to watch out for their own property, and call for help if and when the need arises. Christ you don't want the police having even more responsibilities do you ? Look at the situation with emergency phone calls now. There are hundreds if not thousands of twats who expect the police to act as a free taxi service, a free search engine and all sorts of stupid things. Imagine the situation where you could phone the police and complain about copyright infringement. Most people don't understand copyright anyway and giving them an easy to use one stop shop for reporting "infringements" would be ludicrous. I think the clue is in the name - Department of Justice. It's where you go to realise justice. They don't come to you unless you are a criminal. With rights come responsibilities. In the case of copyrights, those responsibilities are being ignored. Copyright is a limited term right to be the sole entity that can copy a work. But that limited term is being extended instead of curtailed. That is what the DoJ should focus on, not doing the dirty work for the irresponsible rights holders.
While what you say is true, it is still a spelling issue. One letter can make the difference between saying what you mean and spouting garbage. It is not enough to know what you mean to say, you must communicate that meaning correctly. The mistake made in the summary indicates someone who knew the sound of the word, but not the spelling. Lose/loose do not sound the same (lose - fuse, loose - moose) and indicate a different level of incompetence, even though they only differ by one letter.
If 50% of your users are doing the wrong thing, you are the idiot for designing your software so badly half the population can't use it.
Depends what you expect from the users. Once, I was asked to have some fun by hacking another guys front page. This was all private so no breaking into machines. Anyway, my mate just wanted to freak people out, when they went to this other guys site. So I used a little javascript that made the browser window jerk back and forth a few times and then seem to shiver, followed by opening a new window full screen (IE4 or 5) with a typical MS blue background with a similar message to this article. About 30 seconds after it went live the phone started ringing:-> My point is that you could have figured it out by ctrl+alt+del or even ctrl+W, but instead the computers got rebooted. It's social engineering of a particular type. You can use a situation to your advantage by observation of routines. Like birds dropping nuts at traffic lights, then waiting for the red light before picking them up. I'm sure microsoft knows how powerful mindless repetition allows all sorts of things to be agreed to "because the pc said so".
How much did DVD players cost during their first years ? Why should BR be able to leap straight to sub $100 pricing when DVD didn't ? We want it all, right now, but fuck you if it costs money.
The difference is you are supposed to fighting a war, not just willfully and permanently disabling people. Everybody has to live in peace time too. Bullets are *meant* to kill people not give them a nasty rash. Blinding someone is just nasty.
It's very simple. Schools are there to educate children. Not adults. How can you expect children to have adult rights when they don't behave like adults ? You make it seem like there was some kind of major existential argument for a few months, then the principal overreacted. He could have sued, but then she would have been back at school talking to her friends, causing more trouble and the situation would have got worse until after the case was heard. This way, she was out of sight, every other kid got to hear about it and learn a lesson from her. If she apologises he'll let her back in. Better than being sued over it in my opinion. Unless you think what she did was right of course. In which case you've got issues. There is no need for a constitutional debate about freedom of speech, when the issue is a case of common discipline in a school. This whole story is just an excuse for Bennett Haselton to have a wank on slashdot. FFS, OJ Simpson and Al Capone even got a mention. Next up - Man sues claiming his right to free speech was denied because he was refused entry to a restaurant while wearing a thong "because he didn't meet the dress code".
I don't agree there. If the US Govt can't get their own Authority key added to the browser (like Thawte, verisign etc) then they're not trying. It's pretty hard to circumvent a built in device by getting a cheapo freessl cert. They could even make it so that when you access such a govt. site, a big popup tells you that you ARE at a govt. site. It's cheaper to include a new Authority in the browser than change the whole DNS system worldwide.
Since the Linux kernel is licensed under the GPL and they seem to provide a binary-only kernel for their customers (no source code that i saw) it seems we have here yet another clear cut GPL violation case.
Since they haven't distributed anything yet, that is libel. Not to mention they don't have to distribute source to everybody, just with the devices. And you don't know what's on the backup DVD.
"it doesn't matter what other people think" No it doesn't. What matters is what YOU think. And if you think it's a good idea to let potential employers or other "powers that be" see you in such circumstances then you go right ahead. Doesn't say much for your critical skills though. If these people were thinking properly, they would have known wouldn't they ? I mean, if you go to court, do you wear your favorite leather gimp outfit or a suit ? Depends how badly you want to get fined.
Yeah, right. Unfortunately your whole life is before you and the people who can help are right there alongside you in college. And you are ALL learning how society really works. If it's a choice between a degree with attitude, and no degree but experience and good people skills guess who wins.
It's amazing that people are so jealous of the true meaning of a word when it hits them in their pocket. When ever I try to defend the original meaning of a word, I get called a grammar nazi.

It doesn't have a floppy drive either. Or a buggy whip. No hint of steam, more's the pity.

Try "free, as in not being in prison". ie, nothing to do with money which is the "free as in beer" option.
How is this news AGAIN ? It is still in the /. RSS feed and one of the first posts THEN was the summary presented here.

Well to me it says "don't take the piss", but I wouldn't expect myself to get unlimited anything and then try to find the limit deliberately.
