The CSIRO project is about determining how many silicon atoms are equivalent in mass to the current standard kilogram. Once that number is established the actual kilogram in Paris is redundant. If it gets lost or destroyed we can reconstruct the kilogram by counting out 'n' silicon atoms. It also means anyone can construct their own kilogram by counting out 'n' silicon atoms, without having to go to Paris to do a comparison.
Until the big one hits, and we no longer have instruments capable of counting atoms of silicon. Once again, we go for a more technological solution, and a less durable one. At least the reference kilogram in Paris is a physical object. They used to measure quantities with bells in china, another durable item, with a fixed reference - its tone. Future civilisations are going to have to work all this out for themselves (again) I fear.
And how did she achieve this ? By selling off the state owned utilities, that WE had paid for through taxes for generations, with the resulting loss of public accountability. Now our water distribution network is owned by the international conglomerates, as is our power and others. Hardly any of our engineering companies are british owned, and even then, they are usually owned by finance houses (instead of professional engineers) so they are under the threat of downsizing/asset stripping/resale at the slightest downturn in share price. Greed is the name of the game, if you haven't got the latest consumer item, you're a nobody (in the minds of the proles). The majority of workers can't afford to buy houses because wages are low, and you can't get state accommodation because it's all been sold off. The health service is in meltdown, the money we have all payed in towards our pensions has all been used for other things, and we are driving wages down further by allowing massive immigration from eastern Europe. The worst part is, *she* started this, and when we all sighed with relief as labour were elected we were deluded. Labour has done nothing to halt the decline in social values but has continued to accelerate it, as well as dividing communities and flooding us with orwellian restrictions. Money is everything in this country, and you can blame thatcher for that - fair and square.
How often do you have to reinstall Windows?
I am not a big Windows fan but I go years between reinstalls without any problems.
I only do a reinstall when I get new System or a new Drive. Be a real MAN ! GeT Vi4gra nOw!
Without commenting on this particular case, I really wish people would keep their imaginations in check and accept the reality that a lot (at the very least) of these students in similar cases are doing exactly what the RIAA is accusing them of.
And so.... what ? The point is surely that unless the RIAA can prove in a court of law that this was irrefutably the intention, then there is no case to answer. You can break the law as much and as often as you like, but don't get caught. If enforcement becomes pro-active, then freedom is dead (see PATRIOT). Penalties exist for breaking laws, not for possibly breaking laws.
They're walking down the street. Everyone can see them.
Wrong !
"Everyone" is a very very large number of people. And I'm not being pedantic - If you are walking down the street, a limited number of people can see you, ie. those walking the same part of the same street. If your photo gets posted to the internet, then anybody can see you, not restricted to those in the immediate vicinity. There is a slight difference of scale there. Would you like to see your face plastered on every billboard in every town in every country in the world ? If not, why not ?
How about when people use it to track your movements ? Today Fred goes to the pub... Later seen going off with some strange woman (not his wife) Next time we see him, he is entering the VD clinic (has he told his wife yet ?) OOh, now he's attending criminal court (we know he's not a lawyer or a judge, coz we seen him collecting trash cans).
Ok, your average internet user isn't going to be doing this, but we are talking about COMPUTERS here. They are very good at repetitive tasks, and can be left to get on with it all by themselves. If you care about illegal govt. wiretaps, then you should care about this too.
What is it about people today *wanting* to live in an open prison ? Haven't they got the guts to stand up for themselves, and need mothering all the time ?
The new rocket, powered by liquid methane and liquid oxygen will carry passengers on a 90 minute round trip flight for somewhere in the neighborhood of 200,000 euros ($267,000).
Based on 2 people sharing, (fuel tax, transfers and airport fees not included).
Opera ?
Depends if you've got a smartphone or a pocket pc I guess.
The iPhone is not a phone, it's a PDA as far as I can tell, with a mac skin to it.
I already have a decent PDA/phone in the HTC P3600, which has GPS and TomTom and covers all the major 3G networks. I have added Google maps, WiFiFoFum for war driving (did I mention it has WiFi ?). I also have free apps for SSH access and better media playback. Ok it cost more than the projected cost of the iPhone, but we haven't seen the real capability of the iPhone yet have we ?
the first few flights of the shuttle, the tank was painted white. This created a nice, pretty, uniformly white vehicle. Then someone pointed out that the paint served no engineering purpose and was costing 500 pounds. The paint requirement was then deleted and 500 pounds more payload could be sent to orbit.
Question - How much foam came off when the exterior surface was painted ? If the coated surface helped reduce the occurrence of FoD then maybe those 500 pounds were well spent. And then maybe they could work on ways to reduce the weight, while keeping the coating.
I am willing to accept that perhaps it was all just a scam on his part to make people believe he had something he didnt, to try to pretend he had some power and taunt the world community in general. He still deserved to have his country leveled in either case.
His country ? HIS COUNTRY !?
The 2006 estimate was that 26,783,383 people live in that country - did they deserve to have THEIR country leveled too ?
Prick !
What goes around, comes around, so you had better start making amends for Bush's global interference, otherwise someone might decide to level the U.S. !
I find it funny that if a surgical strike had taken out saddam and a few of his commanders, then the whole countrys infrastructure would still be intact, and the US wouldn't be mired in the deep shit they are now. And the actual people who fucking live there would be better off. (which was the whole cooked up premise, wasn't it ?)
But that was never the real intention was it ? The people of Iraq were the last reason for invading, it was all down to backroom agreements between the commander in chief and his military-industrial buddies.
At USDOT, one researcher sought a book that detailed regulations that it set for vehicles.
That book was in a library, a locked room with no open hours.
The telephone number on that library's door led to no-one with a key.
Finally, someone was found with a key to the library,
but the book, produced by USDOT no longer existed,
and the only hope of a copy now lie in the hands of a contractor.
???? And what power does that engine produce, pray tell ?
You are fucking joking ! (no I don't need a reply) Here in the UK cars are seldom above 2 litres, seldom above 4 cylinders, and are almost guaranteed to produce more power than your efforts - (ie. 120BHP/4 cyl/2 Lt)
. and they are running unleaded and meet EU emission standards.
Get off your high horse !
I agree, modern electronic engine management has helped, but bloody hell, get a sense of perspective !
But then we aren't running AC and a massive stereo system, and we don't commute 500 miles a day (at least the sensible people don't) Don't use electronics as an excuse to run fucking tanks ! I don't care if it's "better" than before, get up to speed !
The best steak I ever had was cooked on a disposable charcoal Bar-B-Q, sold in a tin tray with lighter fluid already applied. Wait 10 minutes, add steak, cook and enjoy. Of course the taste may have been improved by the sprinkling of black hash, but whatever.... The only problem was, I felt like I wanted another steak 10 minutes later:~(
So reading his facts I noticed a problem, the simple fact is that this wasn't "fire" this was a jet's fuel supply burning. It was an jet, not "diesel fuel"
Point 1 - Fire is Fire ! Point 2 - Jet fuel is Kerosene, which is highly refined oil, and has approximately the same heat of combustion as diesel. Do you know how jet/diesel engines work ? Air is compressed and then fuel is injected , which ignites due to the high temperature of the compressed air - IN BOTH TYPES OF ENGINE ! Point 3 - Just because you don't give a shit, doesn't mean nobody else does.
While I'm off the topic;-), all I really want is a webhost with shell access, lots of cheap webspace, enough bandwidth for my needs (a few TB's per month plus decent download speeds), and none of the GUI interface nonsense and all the fancy web applications that most web hosts provide these days. All I want is the type of account a university student or professor might have at their institution for example. Anyone know of any *Nix/BSD based webhosts offering this type of bare-bones service? Thanks.
Ha ha ha.
I have a dedicated server and I only get 1200GB per month bandwidth included, so if you want more than that, expect to be paying at least $200 per month rental.
Also, why do you want TB of bandwidth ? I host some linux isos and only get through 80 or 90 GB a month, thats including all my email traffic (25 domains) and various commercial websites. BTW, this is connected through a 100Mbps switch.
If it can be merged with a procedural animation system...
And therein lies the problem. The days where *your* character can be seen reacting to *your* input with that level of detail and accuracy to *your* intended appearance are a very long way off. Until then, it's just filler. You may as well watch Shrek.
RSS and Live bookmarks are the same thing. Accessibility ? so disabled users have to find and download and install their own optimisations ?
Pop up blocker - I thought everybody praised that when it came out
Phishing protection - See above - You been living under a rock ?
Integrated search ? Ooooh, bloat beyond belief !
Automated update - So let's leave the security holes in place on lusers computers shall we ?
Session restore - seems quite good to me, Oh that upstart opera has it too.
Spell checking - I seem to fill a lot of forms in these days, and the net still seems to be largely text based.
I don't know what a "Live title" is (edit I do now, big deal, its just RSS)
Search suggestions I nearly agree with, but hey, it's the only one out of an initially impressive list. Maybe you better stick with lynx, or better yet, wget !
Really though, when did the entertainment industry stop being about entertainment, and more about milking every cent out of it they can.
Since the first guy realised he could make money by entertaining people. It was never about entertainment. You can do that for yourself. The problem is people these days are suckers, and keep paying for shit. The "industry" has been charging more for less incrementally since the beginning. Now they have reached the breaking point they are screaming foul. Well, they shouldn't have gone down that road in the first place.
Or even :
May the Lord have the gift to give us,
to see ourselves as others see us.
Allegedly when his trousers fell down (NOT).

Or there is a crappy flash version here.
Slightly OT, but there is a good advert running in the UK at the moment - .... (10MB xvid)
Have a look
Have a read

They said they would not be involved in censorship, unlike YouTube, who have pulled videos they don't agree with, legal or not.
So they won't be policing the video content based on their own sense of morality.Until then, it's just filler. You may as well watch Shrek.
