  1. Accountability on Spyware Fines OKed By House · · Score: 3, Funny

That is what it all boils down to. I have accepted that as a computer user, hell even a citizen of todays culture, there are people out there that are eager to abuse and take advantage of me.

My computer is just one of the many ways they can do so. Many users have not come to terms with this. Vigilance is now part of computing and the internet.

The one guy that voted against the others has the right idea. The internet is bigger then America. The recent attempts by the American Government to control this beast are not only offensive to me as a Canadian but also stupid as it is easy for the makers of this software to simply move their operation.

Though I would love a flashing screen that says "Kazaa is installing spyware on your system" I don't see it a a viable option. Users need to be aware and accountable of their actions.

Computers as well as many things have been over-simplified and as a result we are now seeing these problems.

I totally agree (unless this person was being serious). It seems like many polititons have either forgotten or decided to ignore the "sharing and caring" aspects of their childhood. I havn't done too much research but it seems that the people running the country are of a different mindset then the general population. The setting that it seems many of the leaders of the counrty were raised in does not seem to be one where property is shared. This brings me to the academic portion of my post. Take a look at the academic world. Resources are shared. Ideas are shared. Knowledge is shared. Most of this is done with as few boarders as possible. It makes things more efficient, faster, safer, and more productive for all. It seems that these arn't priorities for the current government. Welcome to 2004, where property is no longer strictly tangable!

Somebody that knows please let me know, as much as i would like to believe it, linux is not invulnerable to virii.

  6. Current XBOX on Xbox Next to Include PC/Console Hybrid Option? · · Score: 1

The current xbox is as close to a PC as i can ever imagine a Microsoft creation can be. Microsoft surely would not put a standard PC BIOS in the XBOX 2 and hacks would surely be needed to convince the thing to run properly in any other configuration. Microsoft is not about standards other then the unofficial ones it creates itself. From what I have seen the current XBOX is just a mod or even a saved game away from becoming a full PC. If marketed right it I could see it taking a good amount of the market but a few things would have to be fixed. These are no things most people here on /. think of. The biggest is the aesthetic of the XBOX. In the adds I saw it and thought it looked pretty good, sleek, stylish and such but once i saw it in real life i could hardly believe it. It was big, clunky and UGLY. That would surely need to be fixed. Look at the PS2 and tell me it doesn't look good AND fit into a living room. Also people would want this to be extremely user friendly, possibly more then a standard PC. In order to keep costs down I can't see the crippled windows running while in game mode, though a hibernation of sorts may solve this problem, but also impatience for the OS to load may be a problem. One more problem i could see is such standardization. What if somebody wants to store 100GB of movies on the new XBOX2, surely not every XBOX2 will be equipped with a 100GB HD, will there different models? If anybody could pull this off it is Microsoft but I still have my doubts. P.S. XBOX is popular on /. simply for its hackable potential leaving a cheap PC.

  8. Greed on Japanese Digital TV Viewers Complain About DRM Restrictions · · Score: 5, Insightful

It isn't the fact that corporations want to see a profit from their products that bothers me. Corporations are around to make money. That is what they are around to do. Producing music, television, movies, etc is just a byproduct. Don't kid yourselves. What bothers me is that are now starting to have expectations about how much they should be making (and that their profits should be constantly increasing) and have started to view all of their customers as criminals. As mentioned, advertisements are a crucial part of any "free" media. Internet and television are prime examples but the advertisers don't seem to know the bounds. Commercials have been taking more and more air time. Pop-ups were just the beginning and I have now seen some websites with an add directly on top of the page that prevents me from reading it. Because of the views and actions of these corporations and the inability for them to cooperate with a changing marketplace they will ensure their doom. Unfortunately most people don't notice the heavy hand that has come down on them, and when they do they are confused. Most people (outside /.) don't understand the implications of DRM or why they are coming about. Regardless of any DRM imposed the determined (some are righteous, some are criminals) will find a way around these. If only the errors could be seen, but greed can effect sight in many ways.

I called tech support and being that I still had the guest drivers the very friendly tech guy taught me about batch files, autoexec.bat, and helped me add in automatic starting for the zip drive. I don't know if this guy knows it but he sparked a 12 year olds interest in computers that day. Now I am going into my second year of Computer Engineering and am more then proficient with windows and linux. If you are reading this guy, thanks.

  10. Competition on Samsung Announces Largest-Ever OLED Display · · Score: 3, Insightful

I realize that existing LCD technology is expensive to produce but if im lucky the impending obsolescence of the LCD will drive prices down to where I can afford them. The OLED is amazing though. When you think of all of the possibilities, not just for displays. Think glowing wallpaper, hell it could even display images. Of course this is all dependent on an extreme price drop but the term "computer desk" could have quite a different meaning.

You briefly metioned OGG in the above and OGG itself isn't a codec, its a wrapper. OGG Vorbis is an audio codec that is quite good but a totally free video codec is still only in early development. That being said the OGG or OGM has some great features. A very interesting one is the ability to encode the differences in audio streams and therefore save sometimes considerable space. It is currently used most ofter with XVID but can be used with pretty much any video (or even audio) codec. http://www.doom9.org might be able to help you for with some of this stuff. As far as the What would i do with a clean slate, i would probably use OGG with vorbis as the audio and xvid as the video... there may actually be problems with xvid and the law but i don't really know about that. Good luck.

With it an aboriginal can vote for their band leader and which gives them and their culture recognition, and exempts them from paying taxes. It is not genocide. There have been initiatives to relieve this "apartheid" in Canada and they have never been well accepted by the exact population that we are accusingly discriminating against.
