  1. Re:Solar sails myth on Solar Sail News and Upcoming JPL Missions · · Score: 1
I enjoyed reading your detailed explanation and response to the parent's concerns. Very informative. My question (not addressed to you necessarily) is how do solar sail vehicles make the return trip back? They would still need a conventional form of thrust for the opposite direction, correct? I guess I only view solar sails as one directional boosts, much like taking an airplane flight and catching a westerly on your mass drag from LA to Dallas.

I gathered some concept of a spinning wheel of solar sails FTA, much like a traditional windmill. I like that design approach best, providing renewable thrust in both directions (albeit better in one).

Same here. I wonder just how much time some moderators actually spend reflecting on a post before plopping down some points (plus or minus). The parent was at least mildly on topic; apples to oranges maybe, but surely not apples to "Cheney thought Harry had the avian flu" type posts.

I think most here (not you) are blasting this new format unfairly. The only way I know how to save web pages in .pdf in linux and FF is to "print to file", and later convert that .ps to .pdf.

    Drawbacks to this method (pdf)?

    1. Does not store web pages completely as rendered dynamically.
    2. Some frames are left out in .pdf.
*3. Fonts appear different and (sometimes wonky) in .pdf than the actual web page.

    Pros to uni format?

    1. Addresses flash and other embedded content currently.
    2. (hopefully, although not stated in article or their site), it will preserve all frames in the archive.
*3. Preserve fonts as rendered originally on client. That's not a real biggy, but some .pdf rendered fonts are quite unreadable (to me at least) unless you print them off on paper at 300 dpi (or so). My screen isn't even 100 dpi.

    Major cons to uni format?

Obviously, no linux (or mac) versions which the P in pdf addresses. I'm almost tempted to install wine and try this .exe out. I for one would use it (daily in fact).

Such was not the case only a few decades ago. What you witness today is the symbiosis between Market and Science. Their is no defense for it, nor practical excuse of it. I haven't followed mozilla in a while, but as best I understand it, Mozilla runs on top of what's called an APF (Application Programming Framework); who's main purpose is for cross platform compatibility. All browser application components like XML, CSS, and HTML all run on top of it.

Purpose? So a mozilla application developer does not have to port from one platform to the next. It's already done at that lower APF layer, which is compiled for each platform on which it runs. Price? memory and performance.
