FTA:
"The Redmond behemoth asserts that one reason free software is of such high quality is that it violates more than 200 of Microsoft's patents."
Well this proves that Microsoft is lying as their software is certainly not high quality.
The problem is, most Linux desktop users use it to develop or manage it as a server. They won't pay for a game. They will not pay for anything at all, most of the time.
I, a Linux user, am more then willing to pay for the same commercial games that are available for Windows. Matter fact I have payed already when I purchased UT, UT2k4, Quake 4, and Doom 3 which I have installed exclusively to play on Linux. I have no idea where you got the idea that most Linux users are unwilling to pay for software let alone games. Did you poll every single Linux user? Or did you form your ignorant opinion out your ass? I'm sure there is a large number of Windows users that don't pay for their software hence the existence of warez groups offering commercial software for free. And what about the large number of people unwilling to pay for Windows or games which drives many software companies to develop draconian drm & copyright protection measures?
Why download AbiWord when 90% of the workstations out there already have Notepad and Wordpad installed?
Because AbiWord is a word processor and notepad and wordpad do not have many of the features that AbiWord has? You may want to alter your example a little. Comparing AbiWord to notepad and wordpad is an apples and oranges comparison.
When I zoomed in over Microsoft's HQ in Redmond, Washington, I heard the sound of chairs being broken. I'm sure if I zoom in over the White House, monkey sounds will fill my speakers.
It is obvious that you are very naive of history and what continues to go on in this world outside your window. I see that another poster has corrected you about Vietnam, but your statement about the Korean War being over is real idiotic:
And yes the war with NK is over. Making faces at each other over the DMZ is no real state of "war".
It appears to be more than smiling faces going on at the DMZ between North & South Korea since the armistice was signed. Next time research before commenting on topics that you are ignorant of.
You seem to be forgetting SACD and DVD-Audio, both heavily-laden with DRM. The market rejected them in favor of regular Audio CDs...
More like the market (the public in large) never was aware of SACD and DVD-Audio or saw no real value it buying those 2 formats over regular old compact discs; drm had little or nothing to do with the failure of those two previously mentioned formats.
You missed the part at the end in which he said he'd be happy to pay the RIAA members if they offered a product he considers worthwhile
Obviously they do as he is pirating what is out right now. So I guess if it is worthwhile to go through the trouble and time to pirate then it is worthwhile to pay for huh? Lame excuse please try again. If you going to pirate then do it--tired of the asinine justifications.
Adoption is much more haphazard on Linux Distros, so you may be at much more risk running an application such as SSH on Linux than on OpenBSD even when it is compiled from the same source code.
SSP is included with recent versions of GCC 4.1 and above. If your specific distro is using GCC 4.1 or newer, then they are compiling with SSP already.
Do you have any idea how difficult something like that would be to code?
Of course he doesn't. If he did he would code it himself or pay someone to do it instead of whining on slashdot where the GNOME developers (or any devs of large desktop environment project) may never see his complaints. The GP would do better to post his wish list on the Gnome mailing lists.
This cycle seems to repeat itself every couple of weeks for the past year or so. One week some magazine or website claims that Microsoft is embracing or willing to work with FOSS, then the next week Balmer is launching threats about Linux violating their "IP". Microsoft's past actions tell me that they will not change until they are on the verge of defeat (going out of business).
Yea, they chose to invade the Ivory Coast instead. http://www.wsws.org/articles/2004/nov2004/ivor-n09 .shtml/ France's decision not to invade Iraq was a financial one--they were doing business with Saddam including the Oil-for-Food scandal.
In your zeal to assign power to corporation or government you forgot us democrats,
No he did not. Maybe you need to develop some reading comprehension.
you remember, the ones who think power should be in the hands of the people.
Funny. Except most Democrats certainly do not behave in such a fashion. Democrats and Republicans both have made it their mission to strip power away from US citizens for decades. Hell, Democrats right now are trying to push an AWB II and usher in a nanny-state with their social experiments. You may think that Democrats want power in the hands of the people, but they sure do not act like they want it that way.
You must not live in the southwestern part of the US; or you are blind. Groups like MEChA and their ilk have been espousing such claims for years. Its obvious that by flooding the southwestern states with their poor, undesirable under class--who refuse to assimilate into US culture--Mexico is taking a long-term action in taking over the southwestern parts of the US.
We've already got OpenOffice.org (which I'm convinced would gain 3% more market share if they didn't have.org as part of the product name. Stupidest decision I've seen in a while.
As opposed to the time the average Windows user spends installing antivirus, antispyware, a personal firewall, dozens of patches, and three sets of activation. Then after all that, they finally can get down to crawling the web to download their apps, run in thru the antivirus or inserting CD/DVDs in and out to install all their software. I'll take the Free and free Linux/BSD any day of the week.
Oh please. Shows like Firefly failed because--gasp--no one outside of a few thousands geeks actually found the show interesting. When will you Firefly fanatics get it through your thick skulls that most of the American TV viewing did not give a damn about the show and there was no reason for Fox to continue running since it did so poorly in the ratings. It wouldn't have mattered if it was on during prime time and/or advertised to death. Heck the movie didn't even break even. Accept the fact that most people do not like what you obsess over and that Fox has the right to axe failing shows. Loser...
Will someone please mod the parent up and mod down the grand parent. His information is flat out wrong and it is obvious he has no understanding of how a corporation is ran.
The article notes that many of the DRM technologies were forced upon Vista by the entertainment industry, but that may not garner Microsoft or Hollywood any sympathy with consumers
Funny. It appears to me that Microsoft willingly bends over backwards to develop technologies (or patches them quickly) that will aid the major content providers in further restricting consumers' freedoms to do what the hell they want with products that they purchased with their own damn money.
And the XBox 360 hasn't hit 'any impressive milestone'... ? It has out-sold the PS2 in it's first 7 months, compared to the PS2's first 7 months. If that's not a sign that it's plenty successful, I don't know what is.

Demand isn't there? Just astroturfing not real demand you say? Looks like someone missed last weeks article, "Huge Linux Desktop Deals Get HP Thinking."
