OGMRip has been my favorite for a while. The only downside, as of now, is that you have to manually tell it if the video source is progressive/telecined/etc (the author is working on that feature). However, I might have to try handbrake again. When I last tried it, there was no good Linux GUI.
What the hell was going through these peoples' minds when they deemed a strip-search was necessary to determine if the student had ibuprofen? Did nobody involve think "hey, now, this isn't this somewhat excessive"? She said she didn't have the ibuprofen - since ibuprofen isn't really a threat to the safety of anybody (unless she deliberately overdoses), why are they searching her possessions solely based on the accusation of another student
They're treating this as a Fourth Amendment issue, which it is. However, strip-searching a student is wrong and should be considered illegal, regardless of the Fourth Amendment. Doing it because you think she has ibuprofen is just ludicrous.
I liked Serenity not because of the show, but because it fits well with the other two modules Unity and Harmony. If this were the first to be named, I'd definitely advocate honoring a scientists, but as sysadmin knows, having a consistent naming scheme is nice.
Net Applications, the site that ITPro is using as the source of its numbers, lists Safari's market share as 7.42% - a decrease from last month, when it was at 7.7%. Am I missing something, or is ITPro just doing a shoddy job at citing its source?
I consider myself to be liberal. I place a high value on personal freedoms and rights, one of which (as far as I'm concerned) is the right to own firearms.
Anyway, I expect the usual 800-post NRA/2nd Amendment gun nuts vs rational people thread.
Don't forget the people who think that every gun is evil. I don't have any need to own a handgun or rifle, but I support the right of people who do, provided they are responsible (as the father seemed to be, considering that the gun was stored in a lockbox).
Yes, the kid used a gun to kill his parents. However, he could also have just used a butcher knife from the kitchen.
I'm surprised I hadn't heard about Dijskstra's telescope analogy before. People (especially family) assume that computer science means "fixing computers" and "making websites for their dog". I've been looking for a good way to explain what CS really entails.
Possibly. The article doesn't mention where the heat exchange takes place, but one of the diagrams seems to suggest that it's behind the display. Maybe somebody who reads Japanese could translate.
Does this -really- bother you? If so, you are in the distinct minority.
A century ago, people could make the same argument for interracial marriage (note that I'm not trying to equate prostitution with interracial marriage). IMO, it boils down to an issue of civil liberties. What right does the government have to limit what two consenting adults do, just because money is involved? I'm pissed that the government is wasting time and money on this.
I'm sure some of the technology they developed for this is deserving of a patent (I wouldn't be surprised if they tried to patent some trivial/frivolous stuff, though). Patents aren't always bad, even for big corporations.
What part of Wisconsin? Madison is a genuinely nice place to live. However, I wouldn't be surprised if the rural areas live in "willful ignorance".
Indeed. 50-60 years ago, a "computer" was a person or group of people performing computations.

4chan?
Nice try, FBI. I'm not falling for that one again.

No anonymity on the Internet? China, North Korea, and other totalitarian states would love this.
Even touching gconf is pretty much unnecessary these days. The only reason I've had to was to put the trash icon on the desktop.
To quote Firefly, "[The bible] is, however, somewhat fuzzier on the subject of kneecaps."

Really? I killed my roommate after he accidentally wiped out a year's progress in my game of Nethack.
One of the reasons for the 2nd amendment was to act as a safeguard against a tyrannical government.

If Congress passes this, I am buying a roll of stickers saying "[citation needed]" and visiting local video game stores.

My apologies, is that a reference I missed?

You mean "pogrammers"

"Minefield" is just the development codename for the 3.1 series.
My Thinkpad has an LED that illuminates the keyboard. I've found it to be much nicer than the backlit keyboard.
