The article is a somewhat general topic piece on worms in general.
Since General Wesley Clark has entered the general Democratic field for the next general election, it's been generally assumed that general technical issues like this one would be handled with somewhat general ease by applying the general security practices to used by the general public, in general.
Also Frank Herbert in Dune was one of several authors who posted a future where computers were banned because as they grew more intelligent they always tried to take over....
Do we really know that the computers tried to take over in the Dune universe? Maybe I'm misremembering, but I thought Herbert always left the problem of intelligent machines unstated, just alluding to fact that there had been problems. It could have been that humans lost all their will in a world where machines did everything, even the thinking or perhaps something else entirely happened.
I always liked that about Herbert. He knew what to leave out to give your imagination lots of room for wonder.
Ah, this leads to the Dilbert Principle, which is (perversely) even worse than the Peter Principle. Technically adept people don't get promoted because they're so good at doing the actual work.
And this is a serious problem. From it, we get engineers who are asked to put on their "manager's hat" for a moment to evaluate a technical decision. The most famous example being the Challenger disaster, but I'm sure it happens all the time.
Whenever someone says "put on your manager's hat", translate that as "look at this from the perspective of an incompetent".
It's really a moot point, because most viruses exploit vulnerabilities we don't know about yet.
Similarly, most successful infections exploit the fact that the infected organism hasn't seen the infecting agent yet.
But, organisms build faster responses and elaborate 'defense in depth' strategies to infections to handle new infections better than they have been handled in the past.
I'd heard rumors years ago that they were thinking of releasing them. Looks like I missed the release.
They made some crappy audio tapes that were remakes that lacked a lot, the story was compressed a lot and they didn't include a lot of the great music. I have those and they are quite bad.
Thanks for the information. Heh... You should get the Informative +1, instead of me.
I have Mod points too! But, now I can't mod because I posted! Ha!
If this includes the original Hitchhiker's Guide to The Galaxy Radio shows from the early 80's this would be GREAT!
Everybody I know who heard those broadcasts agrees that it was the best HHGTG of all. I don't believe they've ever been released exactly as originally broadcast. Transcripts are available of those shows, but these miss the subtle music and audio effects that made the show really wonderful. I know I was disappointed with some audio tapes I purchased years later.
I've never been interested in ripping off Douglas Adams, or his family, by downloading mp3s that purport to be copies of the original show.
If the Government develops software, it's public domain since the Government is not allowed to hold copyrights. Sometimes the Government holds software as a state secret, but still cannot hold the copyright.
This points out a problem with this. The GPL is based on Copyright Law, your right to copy the software is granted under the GPL only if you follow the provisions of the GPL. Since the Government can't hold copyrights, how could the Government fund copyrighted development?
Now that I type this, I realize the Government CAN fund copyrighted development. They do it all the time. Government contractors often copyright their works and license it to the Government. The Government could let contracts for software requiring that the software be licensed exclusively under the GPL.
What this guy is saying that there are no moments in time (or rather, there is no basic/smallest unit of time), which is why the two objects pass each other.
I fail to see how this is different, or if it is different in some subtle way, how this explanation is better than the common Calculus approach to these paradoxes.
If the code is not time-critical then why optimize for average case performance?
If the code is not time-critical why optimize at all?
The choice of hash tables may have been convenient for implementation, but not taking into account any performance issues. The fact that it's good for average cases is a unintended benefit.
I'm not clear to me whether this is a shock from the Ring current or from the Wall Socket. Note that the laptop has to be plugged into the wall for this to happen. It may be that the ringing closes a circuit that allows the main current to be connected to metal parts of the case.
We don't WANT the government to get involved with the internet, EVER!
HEAR HEAR!
We need to make sure that the Government, and especially the Military and its research branches stay completely away from anything having to do with the Internet.
I understand that the Defense Advanced Research Projects Administration has intensively studied the Internet for a long time. I wonder what they could be up to?
Well, the atmosphere, which mostly moves with the rotating earth, would dampen this tendency a great deal. But, yes, something would tend to move away from the earth as the earth rotates under it.
If they can't abide by the provisions of the GPL, then Germans have no License to use software that is licensed exclusively under the GPL. Too bad for them.
I've got this kind of situation at work. The department I work in is replacing the system I've written and am now maintaining, with a different system that's less suitable for the job and costs 4 (yes, FOUR) times my salary, per year.
Isn't bureaucracy great...
Sure, but you fail to see the BUSINESS reasons for this decision... With you as the prime developer, you might ask for (and receive!) DOUBLE of your current pay! This is untenable. You'd be making more than the boss's son-in-law's golfing buddy Salesman. That's just not going to work in the REAL WORLD.
For only twice that amount, they can get a whole shiny new system and gain valuable relationships with the Software Vendor's Salesforce! It's true that it's less functional that what you wrote and maintain, but really, who cares how hard the clerks have to work?
You need to get some perspective... I guess all those long hours and dedication to technical excellence really hasn't helped your golf game, has it? Pity...
Sigh... Another dissatisfied technical guy who thinks he matters in the big scheme of things.
On average, this story seems to imply he could expect about $28,404 more per year!
No, that's all done with .NET. The 0 degrees of separation that .NET brings you makes it a natural fit for matter teleporation applications.

Your understanding is wrong.
No one?? Really??
*Boggle*

Duh, yeah!
The guy was using sarcasm. SCO is asking for licenses for code that they released under the GPL, get it now?
What's really sad is that this was modded up as "Informative". As if /. readers don't know you can't ask for licensing fees under the GPL.
I'm really disappointed that Guido doesn't know the history of the FSF and the GPL.

In the GNU Manifesto, Richard Stallman long ago proposed the idea of a Software Tax to fund Free Software.

So would the people of India.
A crime? No. But, not allowing the people of the world to achieve what we've achieved here would be a crime, in my opinion.
Sorry, you aren't protected from competition.
Good news, people of the world, you will be allowed to compete now.
Once they are married... well, what's the point?
What great brainstorm you going to tell us next? Women tend to gain weight after they get married?

I assume the copyrights still hold in Germany.
