while being ardently Mac, I can totally agree with your post.
I do think that basically everything Microsoft has ever done has sucked, I'd like to hear a single KICK ASS product they have made. I have a PS3, I prefer it over an Xbox 360, but I can understand they have sold more 360s than PS3's in America.
But, its not a whole revolution is it? People havnt started making products that look like Xbox, they dont start putting the letter 'X' in front of product names etc.
Microsoft launches deserve as much attention as Apples, of course! However, M$ must at least put some effort into their products, make them WORTHY of peoples time! The Zune for example, you brought that up, I'll let you know that you basically cant get the Zune anywhere in the world except for America (and canada recently?). As a New Zealander, I'll go my entire life without seeing one probably. I thought about buying one from eBay, just to have one. When MS doesnt even sell their music device outside of one country, something the young people of the world should be begging for, what does that tell you? Probably that its not very good, or that Microsoft doesnt give a damn about the ENTIRE rest of the world.
If you are American, and live in America, then I'm sure America seems important to you. But 300 odd million people out of 6 BILLION is peanuts. Its kinda like the amount of Apple users, sure Apple users are influential and game changing, like America, but they are a small piece of the pie, the rest of the world, and products, deserve coverage!
I cant believe what you just said, seriously my jaw dropped!:)
I'm a New Zealander who had a 3rd Generation 15GB iPod. I bought the remote at a later date, and loved it fine. I dont see why having the hold button at the top (or bottom) is right/wrong. I'm sorry it was opposite to how you wanted it ok? But really, thats like complaining to Toyota when you wanted the gauges in a different order than what they went with. (sorry to use a car analogy)
I need a new iPod, and basically the new iPod Classic is my only choice. I'm waiting until the big 3.0 iPhone OS release, hoping a newer model will come out with new features.
I dont like the new iPod classic OS, the way it does half a menu on the left, and then on the right random album art? Is that right? I dont like the idea of it anyway.
Anyway, you really cant complain about everything Apple does if you only had one of their products like 5 years ago. They're had a whole 3 newer models since then, we are up to Gen 6 with the Classic, and Apple is slow to make whole new generations, they are not like Dell.
I hope you use an iPod someday soon! Your problems you mentioned with your 3rd Generation, I had NONE of those and still love my 3rd Gen, I'll be buried with it:P
Hitler? Nah, I think Tesla's Death Ray (TM) could take care of any silly little V2 rockets or propeller planes. Hitler probably had a strong right arm though. Have you seen THIS Thats Einstein when he TOOK his medication, you dont want to see him off his meds man.
And you are relatively defensless compared to a crab, no thick armour, no "Pinch-ers", no sharp edges.....you're done for mate:)
As a Vegan I've had a great time reading this/. page. Its funny, and sad, to see people trying to tell themselves that animals DONT feel pain, when its so obvious they must.
To people who like to make out that Vegetarians/Vegans are weak, whiny little girls, I'd like to challenge the average american meat eater (all 100+KGS of them) to pick on Adolf Hitler, Nikolai Tesla and Albert Einstein. You're team has a fat guy who cant touch his toes, armed with a steak knife, we have a man who killed millions of people, the guy who discovered radio waves/magnetism/ the Tesla Coil, and the guy who kinda came up with Nuclear Weapons (thats pretty loose).
I'm a young New Zealand Vegan who has a friend who makes the NZ Vegan Podcast.
She thinks that "happy meat", animals that have been "looked after" because of animal welfare groups are the worse thing about for Veganism, and there have been studies showing people moving from Vegan to eating "happy meat" in large numbers, people who think that because the eggs come from cageless hens, that its ok to eat them now.
Sadly, these ideals are far from acceptable, the hens still have terrible pain, you can easily find footage of inside these operations, with "a hundred thousand chickens inside of a garage pecking each other to death". I've watched a movie called "Earthlings", I hope you decide to watch it too.
I hope you decide that fish have as much right to live as other animals, I've heard people who say "fish dont feel pain" as if fish are so damn stupid compared to cows, that its ok to eat them.
Im a 21 year old guy, I live in a fairly rural area best known for slaughter houses (we call them freezing works, the meat is frozen and sent overseas) and diary farms, but I found it easy to be Vegan. I was vegetarian for two years, and have been vegan for 2009. I wish I never ate any animal products!
When you say its hard for you to change because of significant challenges, what are those?
My friends often bring it up when I dont eat meat, they dont ever really attack me, its more like they are saying "but, you need to eat meat to live right?", they start questioning it themselves, whether they know it or not. I dont make a big deal about it, because it sucks when people talk down to you right?
If you want to do something like being Vegan, then do it for yourself and the animals, and screw everybody else. Its not like you need to be seen in public killing animals and eating the raw flesh right? Nobody will really notice if you dont eat meat.
im sad to think you could possibly be right about people not thinking the life of a fish matters.
Right now the american association PETA is trying to "reposition fish as SEA KITTENS" so that people will love them. Its kinda bizarre really, they have some t shirts they sell with fish wearing kinda cat costumes, to have whiskers and cat heads....
Still, I think its fair to say that people are moving away from brutish behaviour, and I do expect future people to be Vegan eventually. If you watch a lot of Sci Fi, its kinda a given.
All animals must feel pain, I'm quite certain about that, and its stupid to think otherwise, surely its just putting up a mental block to help people keep eating animals.
If not for the animals, go Vegan for yourself, have you never heard of all the health benefits? Have you never seen the "Meat causes impotence" billboards?:P
I too think its very scary to read these comments. To hear people here talking about "of course X doesnt feel pain, dont be silly", its like hearing people deny gravity. I'm sure in the future all people will be Vegan, you often see it depicted in Sci-Fi etc. If you plot a graph from caveman to now, you would probably find we are moving away from such brutish behaviour.
I'm sure that "bugs" feel pain too. It would be silly to assume they dont.
have you ever used iTunes? it doesnt lock you into anything. Its no more "locked in" than your Sansa is "unwanted by iTunes, Americas preffered place to listen to music, buy legal downloads and listen to podcasts".
sorry, I havnt had any internet access for five days because a technician left a "jumper" out on an exchange:)
thank you for your reasonably nice reply, I hate having huge arguments online.
I do agree with parts of your post as I said, its just the way you like to act as if the iPod and iPhone are both horribly flawed in some obvious way that makes them just terrible.
I'm not saying they are both, lets stick with the iPhone, I'm not saying the iPhone has every feature, every tick as you said, compared to other phones, but its far from being bad, and its very hard to imagine it being twice as good, let alone a thousand times as good.
No matter how big the camera on it, in those silly megapixel terms, its never going to be as good as a stand alone camera, for the time being at least. If it had a 3MP camera, it would be bad compared to the 5MP cameras out dirt cheap now. If it had 5, well, for twenty bucks more than the 5MP camera you can get 8MP etc etc.
I have a good sony camera from years back, DSC-F717, its only 5MP but it kicks ass at taking pictures still, it has nightshot etc and feels good to use. The menus suck compared to what an Apple camera would be like, but its still great. I doubt any camera phone would be as nice to use taking pictures.
I do agree with you that the iPhone is nicely put together, but I really disagree with you when you mention it as being "just a bit better because everything else is so bad". I think it stands out on its own merits as being the best phone on the market, indeed, it seems every new phone thats came out in the last YEARS is playing catchup with slapping in touchscreens and wifi, some try to do multitouch, app stores never existed in the way they do now etc. All that is due to how great the iPhone is.
Apple should let other companies compete, but then again, a phone is different from a computer, as another poster mentioned, people expect a phone to always work, and its pretty much accepted that computers screw up, they crash, lock up etc. Lets say you're wife was going into labour and trying to ring you, for you to get home to take her to the hospital. But you use some shitty third party "phone.app" on your iPhone, it drops the call etc before you pick up. Its easy to imagine a lot of hacked together programs crashing, I still get regular crashes with my iPhone apps. Think about all the updates developers shovel out, why, I just finish downloading an app (I love how they are called apps instead of programs, programs sound like something from the mainframe/windows days) and I need an update! I'm on a tiny bandwidth cap, I dont mind downloading a 20MB application for my phone, but if I have to download it 3 times in a month to keep it up to date....Its really annoying. It seems every app I have gets an update every month, Im told to update 20 applications a month!
These developers have all the tools to make these applications, its all legit, Apple helps out and even tests them before they go out. Now imagine if Apple didnt test apps, any 12 year old with a computer could bang out "kickass phone.app", some shoddy phone application. "ooh, I dont need the Apple developed phone program, lets save space and delete the Apple stuff!"
I really dont trust third party things, especially free things. If something goes wrong, who do you blame? Some things like Phones, you just need them to work. I do hope that I can get Firefox on my iPhone, even just to have the pretty icon:P
I like your post, but you think that the iPod and the iPhone are "not very good"? (my summary not yours)
Last night I watched a 6 minute clip of the original iPod release, the 5GB iPod, it was this huge thick brick compared to a modern iPod Touch. Waaaaay back in 2001:) But, watching this video, as I had my original unlocked iPhone charging from my PowerMac G5, my 5th generation iPod next to the iPhone, I *STILL* wanted to get the iPod in the video!
It looked so great, so fresh, it had celebrities using the device, Moby, that fat guy from Smashmouth, Seal.....incredible. If you compare any other 2001 mp3 player to that iPod, I mean theres just no way that you could say those devices were *better* than the iPod in any way! They were slower, bigger, smaller, def. uglier.....
Look at todays market, using the iPod, what is out thats genuinely better in every way than the iPod? Nothing? Anything thats better in one or two ways? Maybe somethings have the same storage size, and maybe even a buck or two cheaper, but would you take one over an iPod?
I think most phones still suck. I like how many Nokia etc phones now have very good cameras, can record video, but the interface etc is just shit. Theres no way I could throw my iPhone out for another phone.
You really think that the iPod and iPhone are nothing special?
have a great day
glad to know I'm not the only one outraged over that still, as a young New Zealander I always have remembered that bullshit, but reading that article about the killers who blew up a pacifist ship in our nuclear free country.....they went back to France because "yip yip yip, we'll keep them locked up here to learn their lesson", they served 10 percent of the time they should have.
Makes me really wish that Labour didnt cancel the F16s, so we could at least protect ourselves from our treacherous allies
I've noticed cool things on iTunes that I couldnt get because I use the NZ version of the store, things like "iTunes 2008" which is a really slickly made interface of the top selling music videos, songs, audiobooks etc etc etc of iTunes for that year, I can view it and its even goddam featured in iTunes I believe, I think it might show up on the main page sometimes,......but if I click on a song etc to take me to that page, pay and download "sorry, that song is not available in your region, switch to US store?" with yes or cancel as options. Im not sure what the deal is with that, but it might be that Im looking at the US store and need to have a US credit card etc to buy from there. Very stupid.
Another example is The Daily Show, I love watching that even when it is a lame episode with nothing good happening, it advertises "buy this episode you just watched for free on iTunes!!!!111!!!!" at the very end of the credits, but TDS is not on any other version of iTunes apart from the American store apparently! So I cant! I actually would be willing to pay a dollar or maybe two for cherry picked episodes, but I cant! Its not like there are dvd sets or something either, so if I wanted episodes, Im just meant to download dvr recrorded versions from bit torrent etc?
We dont get The Corbert Report, I have gotten some audio books of Corbert, and I would consider buying those two since its not on NZ TV, but its unavailable. Really, any kind of regional restriction should not be tolerated in the internet age, imagine if you could only talk to people in your country by email for example.
ok, well speed of light according to this
"Yes, all electromagnetic radiation -- from radio waves to x-rays -- travel at the speed of light. "
http://www.colorado.edu/physics/2000/waves_particles/lightspeed-1.html
for an american site, at least it uses correct units:) It also seems to be formatted for an iPhone?
are you interested now?
While being a fully paid up nerd, I've often thought it must suck to be someone who hates technology, a lot of religious cults dont listen to the radio for example, they wont use telephones even "its a pipeline to filth" whatever that means.
My grandmother works as a interviewer/poll person, she goes door to door asking people if they would do a market research poll. She found a group of ultra conservative religious people, sort of like mormons or something, where the women are not allowed to do basically anything, and theirs a "leader" who censors magazines, cutting out articles, pictures, headlines he doesn't think are suitable for his flock, crazy. How do these people feel about radio waves whizzing through their bodies at the speed of sound? Even if they don't use radios etc because "that Eminem chap swears", the actual transmission zaps through them regardless!
Imagine if we DO find out these radio waves are bad for our bodies in the future, these people who lived in "third world conditions" end up having cancer/whatever from our signals. Is that fair? Do these people have to wear Farraday Cage Burka everywhere because you want to talk on your cellphone to your girlf....mum?
Lets just hope the Leader keeps censoring stories about Radio Frequencies for fear that these cults rise up in some sort of christian Jihad against our invisible death ray beams.
Its so obvious, if you Americans would get in line and pay for a litre instead of a whopping gallon you would soon see the benefit of more efficient vehicles! A litre is roughly a quarter the size of a Gallon, its 3.8 Litres to a gallon. Then its easy to work out how many litres of petrol etc it takes to go 100KM, thats how the rest of the world does this, and guess what, the rest of the world drives smaller, cheaper, more reliable and EFFICIENT cars! None of this "oh yeah, well mine gets this much for highway and this much city and then if I take the roof rack off...."
The rest of the world went metric in the 70's, around when your car industry screwed the pooch with Pintos and the like.
Do you like your stuff compared to the Apple equivilant? I love Apple hardware, I just couldnt give it up really, did you have any Apple products to begin with, or did you decide to never buy anything Apple?
I hear a lot of talk on/. about not using Apple stuff "its overpriced, iTunes=DRM, iPod killers...." but nobody ever throws down a blueprint of their geek setup thats as good as the Apple route! I happily use my secondand PowerMac G5, without screen it cost me just $550 NZD, thats $300 something american. I cant afford a brand new mac so I got perhaps the most beautiful desktop mac for just over $300 american bucks. The Apple Cinema Display ended up costing more than the computer, hah, but I got that secondhand too and saved a bundle! I use it with the unlocked iPhone I got , original, before it was on sale here in NZ, so I was the only one with an iPhone in my entire province probably:) Very cool feeling. My unlocked iPhone costs me less than 5 USD a month, mostly from 20c (nz) text messages. I use an AirPort Extreme that cost me a couple hundred secondhand, and a 5G iPod. I love my gear, and it was "dirt cheap", the main computer setup cost me less than 1000 American, its all made out of Alu-minny-yum, and looks fantastic. I really dont see any comparable non-Apple gear for the same price OR more that would make me switch.
Great that you mentioned the iMac, you still get people complaining that the iMac wasnt a revolution. I remember all the old "no floppy/legacy ports" complaints, and now none of those are needed. Its similar to the MacBook Air not having an optical drive, thats nuts right?....wrong. Today, for the first time in absolute months, close to a year, I used a CD. I cant believe how backwards optical discs are! Its so obvious that digital distribution is the way forward, and guess what Apple is actively moving to with iTunes....already you have music and video, audiobooks, and for the iPhone OS there are apps. How long before everything is from "The Cloud"?
Its a bit like DVDS, my friend downloaded over 200 movies and gave them to me from his external HDD, they copied over and live on my computer now. If I want to change movies, I can close one and open the next file in seconds, no messing around ejecting discs, finding the case etc etc. I look at the 100+ DVDs I paid good money for and cringe.
How long until we get used to netbooks/MacBook Air's with no optical drives, just a good "always on" internet connection through cell towers/wifi, in contact with The Cloud? And of course Apple make the best looking gear around, you cant download a hack to make a Dell look like a unibody Macbook for example, so why not get behind Apple, and use your own OS on the best hardware around?
I got an unlocked iPhone before they came out here, stung me $790 NZ but its on a prepaid plan, it costs me much less than 10 NZD a month, only for what I use, 20c per txt etc.
I use my iPhone for everything, i even switch on its wifi (its through a couple of menus) and use a TV guide application that cost me a couple of dollars, just to see whats on tv next:)
And yet, here we actually do have the iPod Touch ad about gaming on it, and god it makes me itch for a touch! I would get one in a second if they had a 64GB version. I could fit my music by itself on the 32, but its too close to a thousand dollars for me in my mind here. You can buy a Dell with a 20 inch screen for the price of the 32GB Touch here.
Try and get an unlocked iPhone, I mean sure you actually pay the cost of the phone, gasp, but its worth it not having to pay 200 dollars a month like one of the initial NZ plans! ha, 199 for the iPhone 3G and then 200 a month for 2 years! Vodafone NZ changed it pretty quickly, it was all over the media here:) My $790 original iPhone looked cheap:)
Leopard is the latest release of OSX, minor quibble aside, what do you think a good idea for an Apple ad would be?
I dont like attack ads either, here in NZ we just had our elections, the party in power ran all these attack ads about the new Leader of the opposition, who became the Prime Minister (NZs version of a president), things about "you cant trust him" and "he was a money trader over in america you know, look what happened there, the rich guys ripped off the little guy, and X has $50 million bucks").
Mac fanatics like myself would say that Apple "invented" the mouse, the GUI, USB, stunning design etc etc. You know the drill by now:)
And yet Apple is still basically invisible worldwide when it comes to marketshare. I live in NZ, New Zealand, and we dont get lovely Fifth Avenue Apple Stores here, overall we get a couple "Big Box" stores per city that MAY have an iMac and a Macbook tucked away somewhere.
So Apple is thought of as something like Lamborghini, you see it on tv, people in womens magazines use Macbook Pros, not normal everyday people. I understand that the "mac vs pc" ads run all the time in america right? I think theres been maybe 3 that have been on NZ TV, and only ever on one channel. We got some iPhone ad, and one for the Macbook Air, but theres never stuff on normal tv etc for Apple.
Surely the best way for Apple to sell more Macs is for them to point out whats different, whats obviously worth spending a few thousand dollars on over the current PC a potential switcher has? BTW, Macs are more expensive here in NZ, and probably in many places like the UK than they are in USA. A normal iMac can end up costing 3000 NZD with a 3 year warranty and Microsoft Office for Mac thrown in. People deserve to know that its worth that, and that they can feel special about being an Apple user after paying that much:)
Sorry if you are annoyed by the American ads. I hope you decide to look at a Mac by yourself sometime, look at the hardware/software somewhere quiet, so you can make your own mind up and hopefully take the plunge. Have a super day.
I'm looking like the ultimate Fanboi here, but Mac OSX has consistently gotten faster with each new version. I consider them all fairly different, more than just service packs etc. 10.0 was slow as hell, 10.1 came out and added features while speeding up performance, 10.2 was faster still etc etc.
Some people have mentioned the last version, 10.5, as being slower, and that it had initial bugs. I havnt noticed it myself.
I do think that basically everything Microsoft has ever done has sucked, I'd like to hear a single KICK ASS product they have made. I have a PS3, I prefer it over an Xbox 360, but I can understand they have sold more 360s than PS3's in America. But, its not a whole revolution is it? " http://www.colorado.edu/physics/2000/waves_particles/lightspeed-1.html for an american site, at least it uses correct units :) It also seems to be formatted for an iPhone?

The rest of the world went metric in the 70's, around when your car industry screwed the pooch with Pintos and the like.
I hear a lot of talk on /. about not using Apple stuff "its overpriced, iTunes=DRM, iPod killers...." but nobody ever throws down a blueprint of their geek setup thats as good as the Apple route! I use it with the unlocked iPhone I got , original, before it was on sale here in NZ, so I was the only one with an iPhone in my entire province probably :) Very cool feeling.
And of course Apple make the best looking gear around, you cant download a hack to make a Dell look like a unibody Macbook for example, so why not get behind Apple, and use your own OS on the best hardware around?
its not fair! its not fair!
I use my iPhone for everything, i even switch on its wifi (its through a couple of menus) and use a TV guide application that cost me a couple of dollars, just to see whats on tv next :)
Vodafone NZ changed it pretty quickly, it was all over the media here :) My $790 original iPhone looked cheap :)
You know the drill by now :)
People deserve to know that its worth that, and that they can feel special about being an Apple user after paying that much :)
Sorry if you are annoyed by the American ads. I hope you decide to look at a Mac by yourself sometime, look at the hardware/software somewhere quiet, so you can make your own mind up and hopefully take the plunge. Have a super day.
Some people have mentioned the last version, 10.5, as being slower, and that it had initial bugs. I havnt noticed it myself.
