    and I caught this past Sunday. I wouldn't have noticed it if hadn't been that my user account loat privilages to "ls". I'm in the process of trying to sort out the problem and secure my machine. For the moment, I've stopped almost all service on the machine except the ones I need for internet connection sharing and only have the DSL modem on when I'm surfing and checking my email.

    Since I'm not a system administrator, anybody have some good pointers for me? Since I haven't read the article yet, does it give home users (particularly Linux users) some good info on securing your computer/home network?

    The most ironic thing about this, was that I was planning on taking my computer down in about a week to do most of the work I'm trying to get done now.

    Since the RIAA has stepped up its attack, how many lawmakers (or should I say lawmakers' kids) have become the targets of this attack? Because, I think that number is growing and the lawmakers just want to make sure they get their and families' asses covered before it' too late. What do y'all think?

    If I were the owner I would be very nervous right now..

    If I remember correctly, publicly traded companies are incorporated and as such the shareholders are not financially responsible for the company's debts. Now IANAL; so, take this with a grain of salt.

    Big deal! Nearly 65% is owned by the employees (~70% if you count the Trolltech Foundation which probably votes with the employees). Plus, the chances are the employees will eventually buy back even more of the stock.

    If I lend my serviced to Germany to help them fight France as a german agent, am I then a terrorist? No. I would be captured. I would then be help as a POW. (or killed and thrown in a ditch...)

    Since you would be considered a spy, if I remember the Geneva Convention correctly, you would probably be shot and thrown in a ditch. However, some cultures have very interesting ways of handling spies. Here in the US most spend a significant amount of time in prison. I wish we'ld go back to shooting spies.

    The German legislation requires, that government has to make a public
    call for offers, and then choose the cheapest offer.


    I don't think this is true. I remember hearing that in a lot of cases the German gov't. will choose the BEST bid not the cheapest. I know that the discussion was more about the Autobahn; so, may not be the best. Unfortunately, most US gov'ts will choose the cheapest bid regardless of the TCO (mainly in the form of maintance). Just think about how crappy most US roads and hiways are!

    I know that most of the cases that get media attention involve computer related IP infringemnet. I feel almost certain that there is noncomputer IP infringement that occurs as well (think corporate espionage, printing illegal copies of books). How many of these noncomputer related cases do you get involved in? Why or why not? If the case is why not, what makes the computer related IP infringement criminally illegal and the noncomputer related not so? Or is there another branch within the DoJ that handles the noncomputer related?

    I've had the problem with a couple of 3rd party CD-burning utils. It was a bitch trying to find the right dll's for that program. Anyhow, one I got my SCSI cd burner it really didn't matter.
