I think what open source really really needs is a version control system that forces code review and testing. For each project there should be coders, reviewers and testers. When the coder check in code it's not committed until the reviewer reviews it and the tester tests it.
It's just good sound practice but people don't do it because they don't have to. If their revision control system made it easy and mandatory then more of it might get done.
In your analogy the copyright owner would be suing the people who saw the movie. That's what SCO is doing. Suing the people in the movie theather for watching a stolen movie.
It's a sad commentary on the US legal system when the perception exists that courts will look more at a companies ideology then the evidence presented.
If you are right then the concept of justice no longer exists in this country. If courts decide a case on what somebody believes or their religion then we are all fucked.
OTOH even if you are wrong just the fact you hold that belief is a harsh indictment of the courts.
Long time ago there was an awsome program called ecco pro. This program was always highly rated by magazines and users and had a devoted following. Netmanage bought this program from the original company (arabasque) and shortly thereafter shelved it for mysterious reasons (many people suspected MS foul play).
That was a very long time ago and today there is still a vibrant community of ecco users who swear up and down that no other product even comes close. They beg Netmanage to sell the code to them or to open up the source code but Netmanage just ignores their requests. Oddly enough Netmanage does let people download the binary.
To me what netmanage is doing is just cruel. They are not making money off of it, they don't support it and yet they refuse to sell it or open it up. Why did they buy this program for so much money just to mothball it?
First of all they are human beings who are american citizens, why should they be denied free speech?
Secondly exactly what are the qualifications of Rush Limbaugh or Bill O'relly? Why should they be heard and not Sean Penn.
At least Sean Penn actually went to Iraq and met actual Iraquis.
We all met journalism majors in school, we know that they don't represent the best or the brightest of this society. What makes them so special that they get to be the only ones with the ability to broadcast their opinions.
Gee you are letting him off easy aren't you? Why not make him watch episode IV for eternity, better yet a special edition with narration and commentary by Jar Jar Binks.
Bill's performance was OK. He was acting like he always does. In other words he was pretty much playing himself (albeit a little more subdued).
Sean Penn gave a terrific performance in both 21 grams and mystic river this year. He could have won it for either one. He definately deserved the award.
Personaly I though Tim Robbins did an amazing job. His was the best performance I was this year without question.

Nice troll congratulations. You got modded up too, nice job.
"The FSF doesn't like the new license and begins telling people that it is incompatible with the GPL. Does that mean they are right? "
Yes. Even the X people agree, so the the openbsd people.
"Does the GPL mean whatever the FSF decides it means that week? "
Nice troll, I'll give you a 9 for this. You will actually fool people for thinking that this has something to do with changes to the GPL. Of course you knwo that's not the case but a briliant use of misdirection.
"Or, in a country governed by the rule of law, does it mean no more and no less that what it be proven to mean in court? I don't know about you, but I tend to believe the latter"
Another brilliant misdirection. You know full well this nothing to do with the law. Another 9.
"More importantly, what exactly is the FSF supThe law which so venerate so much gives the FSF the right to sue people who violate their license. I doubt it will come to that but the FSF has the right to sue and they have shown willingness in the past to sue.
"Do they have the money"
Yes they do. They also have the ability to raise funds if they need it.
"let alone the ability convince a court that the suit isn't frivilous?"
Easy. Show the license, show where the license has been breached, collect damages. If the license is deemed void amend the suit to one of copyright violations and collect even more money.
"More importantly, can they afford the ill will that would result?"
The people who already hate them (you, MS, SCO etc) will continue to hate them no matter what. The OSS community will hail as heroes for enforcing the GPL.
"I personally don't understand why XFree considers this change so important, but neither do I see it as a harmful one"
They can do whatever they want. If the FSF says it's incompatible with the GPL then the distros won't include it. Every action has consequences.
"Isn't that something that RMS has been whining about for years with his GNU/Linux nonsense? He "corrects" people for calling Linux Linux every chance he gets. In fact I read an article where the author claimed that RMS refused to give an interview unless the article used his preferred terminology."
Great touch. End your post with a personal attack on RMS. I think that got you the +5 more then anything else.
People should bookmark your post. One of the all time great trolls.
You are lying of course. There is no way a swing application is slow on a 2Gz desktop. It's a little slow to load but once loaded it runs just fine.
1.5 will also address the slow loading problem. By the time Munich is done recoding it should be in production and with linux desktops distributing it should be no problem.
Once again your tiny little feeble brain is confusing speech with code. Stallman and the FSF are very much likely to defend your speech no matter what you say. What they don't like is you stealing their code. Advocating freedom is different then advocating theft. No proponent of freedom says that you should be free to steal other peoples stuff.
They don't have the same definition of freedom that you do and you are really pissed because of that. So pissed off that you want to "disinfect" them. I suppose that means killing them or something because I don't know how else you would disinfect something.
Somehow you have gotten into your head that freedoms means you can do whatever the fuck you feel like whenever you feel like it. I hate to break this to you but that's not the way it works. Having absolute freedom means denying everybody else of their theirs. You are not free to rape women because you think they are pretty and you are not free to steal other peoples code. Just because you are not allowed to rape your next door naighbor that does not mean you are not free. No definition of freedom allows for something like that (except yours of course).
You should read the speech professor Moglens speech at harward. Their idea of freedom is one of a self healing commons. An enduring and irrevocable freedom. In order to achieve this kind of a perpetual freedom they have invented the GPL and you know what it works.
The reason you are pissed off is ample evidence that it works. You want to make money off of their backs. You want to take their code and make it your own, you want to sell it and make money off of it and they won't let you. By preventing leeches like you from stealing from the commons without giving back they ensure long term existance of the same commons.
First of all I want to point out that data bound controls are pretty much evil. Without proper separation of model, view and controller it makes applications very hard to maintain.
Secondly the answer is java. Eclipse and netbeans are very good IDEs and there are great commercial ones as well. For delphi shops Jbuilder is a great choice because it looks and acts a lot like Delphi. With java you also get great middle tier and scalability. Much better then what you would get with VB or Delphi.
Finally check out this. They seem to be working on data bound widgets for J2EE.
If the CEO of Novell was smart he would jump all over this and make it happen if it cost him money. Combination of Suse and Novell directory services, zenworks, ximian etc would allow this migration to succeed wildly.
Novell now has all the tools to be a very successful vendor for enterprise systems. Munich could be a showplace of their technologies and one could certainly imagine an unending series of press releases and white papers on how great edirectory is working out or groupwise makes people more efficient.
If I was novell I would do this at zero profit or even take a loss. The returns would be huge.
"Microsoft has a definite edge in the usability category while Linux has the edge in the security category."
maybe on the desktop but definately not on the server end. Anybody who has gotten bogged down the hellish bowels of AD and WMI would tell you of the horrors that lie there.
It's just that most windows admins manage small networks where clicking on tabs is sufficient to keep things stubling along. When it comes time to move a file share or roll out a new hotfix they run from desktop to desktop and constantly fire off email messages about how you should not click on attachments. That's what passes for windows system administration for most people.
There are sharp admins out there who manage bigger networks. They do it by scripting just like unix admins do. The problem is that unix is much better suited for script based administration then windows is.
"If Apple would aggresively sell their OS for x86 hardware they would probably make a killing since they have found a very good balance between the two sides."
I really don't think Apple wants to enter the X86 market. They would be just another vendor like Dell and Compaq. Selling hardware at 1% profit is no fun.
This choice was not made because of money. If you remember the windows bid was actually lower then the linux bid.
Oddly enough Munich chose linux because of freedom!. Freedom to dictate their own upgrade schedule and freedom to exclude or include software of their choice. Of course there was also the freedom to switch vendors if they wanted to.
I guess cities and corporations value freedom as much as humans do.
"Similarly, Stallman disallows some reuse of his so-called "free" code because he disagrees with it."
He does no such thing. It's a license. If you don't agree with it then don't distribute it. That's your freedom.
"Further, Stallman's idea of freedom is not truly free because it denies freedoms to programmers who wish to actually make money from the fruits of their labors."
Again you are completely wrong. The GPL does not prevent an author from making money from the fruits of their labors. It prevents them from making money off of MY labors. You see the difference?
"To the rest of us, it's a hollow shell."
Only if you are too stupid or lazy to write your own code. If you are leech on society who likes to kick back and let other people work hard and then suck away their property for your self then I can see how this would not work for you. Too bad America has become so used to getting welfare from the govt because now they want welfare from everybody else too.
Stallman or anybody does not owe you code. Nobody owes you code. You need to get off your ass and work instead of whining about how you are not allowed to make money off of other people's code.
"I believe the Founding Fathers would agree with my view on the subject, because they universally held that free speech must extend even to those concepts that some find offensive or objectionable."
Absolutely. Nobody argues with that. But apparently your limited IQ is not able to grasp a simple concept. Code is not speech. It's not protected by the constitution.
Finally ask yourself this. Why do you demand the stallman give you his code. Don't you think MS or Oracle have more and better code then stallman. How come you are not throwing a hissy fit because MS won't give you code? Aren't they infringing your right to make money?
Isn't it easier to write you applications so that extensions could be loaded at runtime?
Take a look at how debian distributes php for example. When you install php you get a bare version. If you want oracle support you apt-get it as a separate binary and make an entry into php.ini to load it (actually apt makes the entry for you ).
You know you are right. It only talks about males. Of course bible is all full of strange stuff like that. Flying lizards, don't let the egyptians into church, sun moving backwards, stars falling down to earth. That last one really cracks me up.
But aren't the ten commandments in the old testament and a part of the jewish law? Is it only leviticus they are not bound by or the whole old testament. Also are they bound by all of the new testament or are there passages in there they are not bound by?
I am asking this besides there is lots of weird stuff about homosexuals in the new testament too. In fact there is a lot of just crazy surreal stuff in the new testament. In many ways weirder and more bizaare then the old testament.
He probably has a lot of porn on his hard drive. Some of those pictures were probably of women who looked like little girls. Believe it or not it's illegal to posess those pictures.

That's a ridiculus collection of non sequitors.
If a company gets sued they will hire lawyers. If they want to prevail they will hire lawyers with experience in the particular area of law.
A fortune 1000 company would certainly hire a competent law firm to defend it.
BTW it would be lawyers who present arguments not the company itself.
Why would you presume that? They would probably hire a law firm like any other company to defend them don't you think?
In your analogy the copyright owner would be suing the people who saw the movie. That's what SCO is doing. Suing the people in the movie theather for watching a stolen movie.
