  3. Things that work for me... on Preventing RSI? · · Score: 2, Interesting

Wrist rests may work for some, but I find that they place pressure on the wrists and forearms right where I don't want it. My recommendations:

    1) Posture is important. Have a look on Google for guidance on arranging your workspace on ergonomic guidelines. Also, consider seeing a chiropractor - a competent chiropractor will be able to track down areas of weakness and suggest exercises to strengthen muscle groups which are causing problems. Which leads to:

    2) I find that regular light workouts with a set of dumbells help - make sure your arms can support themselves!

    3) If I find my forearms are getting a little sore, contrast bathing is helpful. Bathe your arms for a minute at a time in cold water, then hot water, then cold again, alternating back and forth and always finishing on cold. Do that once a night for a week or so.

Usual caveats - I'm a geek, not a doctor, dammit; your mileage may vary; if you're really having problems, see a doctor rather than asking Slashdot...

It's a pet theory of mine that evolution works in three stages, and we're just embarking on the third stage:

    1) Environment changes species. The species responds to its environment until it reaches a certain point, which leads us to:

    2) Species changes environment. Tool-handling gives us the ability to shape our environment to our own benefit. This reduces the need to adapt to the environment, so natural evolution slows down, until:

    3) Species changes itself. Genetic engineering/screening/manipulation gives us the ability to modify ourselves... and, for good or bad, the pace of change will increase again.

  11. XFCE and Slackware on A Look at GNOME 2.14 · · Score: 1

Slackware comes with XFCE as an option for your desktop. Zenwalk, which is based on Slackware, uses XFCE as the default (only?) desktop.

I've been using XFCE on Slackware for about a year and find that it's very functional - not quite so spartan as using just a window manager like Fluxbox or Blackbox, but still light enough to run on a 250MHz laptop.

Recently I've been tinkering with KDE and Mandriva on a PC I'm setting up for my computer-phobic dad, and KDE is quite user-friendly, but I prefer my desktop to get out of the way and let me get on with things, which XFCE does nicely.

Some of the boards have hardware acceleration for video work, and Via have released a version of Xine modified to take advantage of said hardware. If you're planning to use Linux have a look for the Via Enhanced Xine Player project on Sourceforge, with the caveat that I haven't tried compiling it myself and can't vouch for how well it works.

Via's Mini-ITX motherboards are best described as adequate. I built myself an M10000-based mini-desktop a while back and while it is useable for web browsing, word processing etc, it certainly doesn't blow me away.

A desktop pc with a decent performance, but low power requirements, really appeals to me - the idea of cranking up a 3+GHz PC with half a gig or more of RAM just to write a letter or pick up email seems terribly wasteful.

For the past three years or so, I've been keeping a diary of all my dreams that I can remember on waking. Mostly, they're pretty garbled, but sometimes there is some resonance with a real world problem.

Not explicitly, of course; it tends to be on a metaphorical level. Dreaming of spiders usually means I'm distressed or under pressure, for example, since spiders give me the wiggins; any dream involving people who are masked or whose faces are otherwise occluded means I feel threatened.

So... is dreaming part of the decision-making process?

On the other hand, if IBM, Red Hat et al are encouraged to commit manpower to the project by a loosening if licence restrictions, wouldn't that help in cleaning up the codebase?

That's couple of pretty big ifs, of course. Many open source projects, for good or bad, tend to focus on the addition of new features rather than just making the old ones work properly and cleanly, every time; so chances are, more manpower might well be used deployed on tasks other than cleaning and streamlining, despite OOo sorely needing a bit of both.
