I am a step behind your concerns, but got a question for you. How much would you charge for a typical "clean off the spyware/worm crap" call? I am in a fairly affulent area and moved back after being away for five years. My sisters are starting to recommend me to their friends - while I am happy to help them now, my good nature may not last long if this keeps up. I don't want to rip them off, but at the same time it is a PITA for me and I should get something for it.

Touche - I live in the Philly burbs. My commute each day as an IT manager door to door is exactly 50.0 miles each way (which is also on topic for this article - the market was good enough for me to land this within two weeks of looking for work back in August, but not good enough that I could find it in that period of time in Philly itself. Since IT Manager jobs don't grow on trees, I took this one while I plot my next move). I usually do it in 50 to 55 minutes. I still find 3 to 4 hours a bit much to swallow but am more inclined to believe you, especially if you are travelling on one of the areas 35 mph roads for the length of your trip.

I got that exact card last week. I read several reviews on it and got one built by MSI for about $200 from newegg. With WHQL drivers, I run Doom3 on high wih no hiccups, Desert Combat final runs great on high, Far Cry demo looks good. I run 3dmark, Aquamark, etc once or twice for curiosity's sakes, but numbers don't mean as much to me as smooth gameplay on the titles I own. This card certianly does, and should hopefully keep me happy for the next couple of years.

Not me. I just called on Friday night to find out why my order hadn't shipped yet from placing it Thursday morning. Usually it leaves within hours of placing it. There was no menu - a friendly woman picked up instantly. Really instantly. She informed me that there appeared to be a slight delay in my order leaving a certain warehouse, but shr would do her best to have it expedited. I checked my mail when I got to work this morning and found that newegg had shipped it over the weekend. Since they state they don't work weekends, they apparently rolled up their sleeves to get rid of their backorders. Score another point for them - I have spent $1500.00 in the last two weeks with them and tell everyone I know about their selection, price and service. Just want they want - a loyal customer spreading the word for them.

and they won't let you. Here's a fun story.

I finally convinced my wife to drop AOL last year when we were in a bit of a money crunch. They would not accept our cancellation instructions and made it very difficult to leave. Rather than change my credit card number to get rid of them, I decided I would make it advantageous for them to drop me.

I created a screen name called CacaPooPoo (I forgot the exact name, but it wasn't far from this) and went a trolling. Trolled long and hard, far and wide. I went into religious chat rooms and spewed forth such vile language that Penisbird would be ashamed. Of course they threatened to report me - I sneered at them and went on my merry way into the next chat room. Merriment ensued.

A solid hour after starting this, I finally got booted off with a message on the screen to call them at 800-xxx-xxx to discuss my behavior. Intrigued, I called and spoke to an Indian woman in their abuse department. I mentioned that I was booted off and wasn't sure why. She explained to me that a screen name called BigCacaPooPoo was reported as spamming repeatedly in all caps "I WANT TO GREASE YOUR MOUTH UP WITH MY POO!" in Christian Chat 87. I let her know that I was indeed aware of this behavior and that I was trying to get the account cancelled. I said those exact words. She replied that they would consider this a warning and reactivate the account. I mentioned that even though I was trying to get it cancelled and was aware of the behavior (seeing as it was me that did it), did I understand her correctly that I was being reactivated? Yup, she said. Thanking her for her time and good efforts, I went back at it and trolled with renewed vigor. Along with this I found a message in my mailbox from a specific TOS person or whatever they call it, advising me that further offenses would not be tolerated. I replied to him with 4 pages of "F*** YOU" c/p'ed over and over and some ASCII art of goatsee.

Alas, my time was marked at that point. Ten minutes later I was booted off of AOL with a message stating that my account was cancelled. Success! I had accomplished my seemingly simple goal and have a bit of fun doing it. Juvenile? Of course. However, look deep inside yourselves and ask the kid in you if you wouldn't have done the same thing. You are offered too few chances in life to act like a bull in a china shop with the result that you wanted in the first place. Seize the chance! Troll now, have some fun and save yourself $14.95 in the bargain!

They have not been national collections by any means. They have been donations made by Irish Americans who do not understand the simple fact that solving violent problems with violence is not a viable or sustainable solution. That's like saying that all Muslims seek the destruction of the United States. I have been fortunate to know many kind and devout Muslims who believe in their faith, but also believe in the value to human life and do not see violence as an end to justify their goals. Do all Muslims want to kill Christians or Americans? Not by any means. I believe that northern Ireland should be part of the free state of Ireland, but have never given a dime to the IRA to forward this cause (BTW, my father is an Irish Citizen). Your narrowminded observation is like me saying that all Brits support the notions of Cromwell and the Irish should hate the people of GB for that. You can dislike (hate) a government for it's stance, but to condem the people under that leadership is foolish and shows your unwillingness to seperate people from the political climate that they happen to live in.

Back on topic, at my last job I worked with the FBI and Secret Service on bank fraud, kiddie porn, etc cases that were hosted on our web servers. Think what you may about them, but they really have their shit together on these types of events and are dead eager to get the offenders in question. The smart person, if they are trying to do anything highly illegal, would do well to go about their business without using the internet. Once you get the attention of the Feds, its usually lights out for the perp. One case I assisted with was a conspirancy ring involving the sale of illegal guns in the UK, using a US based hosting company (my old job). That case broke earlier this year with several arrests and the destruction of the ring. Scotland Yard was the lead on it with backup from the FBI, with cheerful cooperation from us. Our policy was not to go "fishing" for questionble content on our web servers, but once we were made of illegal activity we would preserve evidence and work with the authorities. I've seen pictures on some website that puts tubgirl to shame, usually involving kids. Made me happy when the Feds would follow up with us and would tell us that they got their man (or men)...
