I lied to immigration. It sucked. I advise aganist it.
I was sent to Jamaica by my previous employer two years ago. Due to the fact that my former company claimed that it took seven months to get a work visa, I was to tell them that my colleagues and I were there on vacation. I wasn't happy about this, but went along with it.
When it turned out that we had to overstay our trip by several days, we went to the local immigration office in downtown Montego Bay to get our stays extended, they stated to ask my team leader who was with me (I was the head honcho on this trip - scary thought there!) and myself about our trip, where we stayed, etc. Something made them hinky (to this day I'm not sure what) and we got passed along from officer to officer, higher and higher up the chain, and in increasingly darker and more isolated rooms. Finally we had the head of the local office interrogating uys on every aspect of our trip - what we had done, who we knew in country, what our daily schedule was, etc. He finally said "What if I were to tell you that we have undeniable proof that you have been working illegally at location *****". Faced with this, we admitted our guilt and promptly flipped into panic mode. (Jamaica is a very friendly place, but imagine that you are a foreigner anywhere and admitting to a alien government offical that you are lying to them and are in their country under false pretenses wheee!)
Very fortunate for us, the people we were working with were very wealthy islanders who did a lot for the local Mo'Bay economy. As so often happens, money greases the skids of both business and government. Once they learned who we were working for, a quick phone call to that party got us the extension we sought and a swift kick out the door. Any other slob without this (unbeknownest to us) safety net would have found themselves in trouble quick.
My advice is threefold:
1) Make sure you pad your imigration form for extra time - you can always go back sooner.
2) Don't work for shithead companies who don't care if you are left to hang out to dry or not.
3) If an immigration offical asks you a question, don't lie and run the risk of pissing them off - it IS their country:)
We're sorry but there has been an error with your request. Please try again later.

There was a thread from yesterday on the general forums by WoW's community manager with a less than verbose message regarding their recent problems and plans for resolution. Their board login system is linked to their system login system, which means when their is a systemwide issue it makes it difficult for customers to post on their message boards. Whether this is by design or accident is left to question, but it does seem suspicious since this has been brought up a number of times to Blizzard and they have not seperated the two login systems thus far. Many people (including myself) are torn between liking the game a whole whole lot and being subjected to progressively worse game stopping issues over the last month or so.
I actually read the FA (Ok, scanned it), and I didn't see anything that the FBI required that isn't commonly available now. Get a robust DB, have information decrypted at the user's computer, do not have any portion of this network on the Internet - instead use VPN/SSH connections physically secure the boxes, etc. Why they went to a third party in SD who blew through 130 MILLION of our tax dollars with nothing to show for it is beyond me.
I (along with many other people I am sure) notified GMail of this yesterday after reading this story. I got the following in my Inbox this morning:
Hello,
Thank you for your message. Today, Google was alerted to a security vulnerability affecting Gmail, and our engineers quickly resolved the issue. A very small number of Gmail users were affected, and all Gmail accounts are now protected from this vulnerability.
Google has the highest regard for the security of our users' information and we apologize for any concern this issue may have caused. Thank you for taking the time to contact us.
Sincerely,
The Gmail Team
Nice to know that they do read and respond appropriately to both problems and concerns raised to them.
Agreed - a pretty murky game. None of this "hold your hand" GP being flung at you - you were lucky to get 3 coppers to rub together. Also Morte, dear Morte - the world needs more sarcastic floating skulls...
Descent 4 would have ruled. I hope someone decides to carry it out. Heck, there are still pilots playing in the mines 7 years after D2 came out. I remember many a happy night eating taquitos by the comp when I lived in SD and playing Minvera or Gigadeath (still my all time favorite level - I was a ES whore rather than a dogfighter). In many ways it is still the most difficult FPS to master, due to the complete immersion of the Z axis in all three games. Nothing linear in Descent - it kept you moving and may the faster trigger win when you rounded a corner...ah memories. Now I wanna go looking for the install discs...:)
Isn't there an option to post as HTML? Isn't there also a reminder to check links or even preview before you submit your posts? Don't you HAVE to preview as AC before submitting a post? Sheesh...Merry Christmas to you too.
Agreed for the most part, but they are a necessary evil, even for/.'ers. A case in point is last night, when I installed a new PS in my box - during the course of this, I somehow nubbed a connection on my Jet 4, making the fan go as slow as it possibly can (less than 2K RPM according to MBM). This made the CPU heat spike up to 60 C under load. My wife, bless her heart, asked me if I could take the CPU heatsink out of an 1.2 GHz P4 box that I have and use that on the 3 GHz HT box. I explained to her that this would be throwing an ice cube onto a fire, and started to check the wiring from the fan switch to the heatsink. I can't see anything pulled, frayed, etc, but it wants to run at a snail's pace, so I am left with a few options here:
1) Forego WoW, Desert Combat, using iTunes to update my iPod, or any other task tht will make the CPU run at 100% or close to it (this is regrettably not an option)
2) Go to newegg and get a replacement one there, pay for expedited shipping, and hope that they ship it today, so I get it tomorrow. Christmas is always more of a diceroll to get something reliably out the door. Last time I used newegg a month ago, they had a problem with their warehouse shipping system and orders were backed up for 6 days. I love these guys, but now can't stake my kids' lives on them shipping the same day as placing the order, especially with 5 shipping days till ho ho ho time.
3. Go to CrapUSA and get one there.
Places like this are good in a pinch, assuming you know exactly what you want and don't need to ask a single question. Once you open your mouth, you are doomed. I found one there online that should get me by without actively cooking my processor (yeah I know they should shut themselves down if they get too hot, but does any rational person want to bet on that?), or cringing every time I enter Azeroth with the thought that I am causing hidden damage to my shiny new P4. So in short, I reserved one, and will pick it up on the way to our company holiday party tonight. Places like this do survive on the general public, but it is nice to have them in our midsts for a rainy day.
PS - happy holidays to all!
Usually, I'd try to find some witty ass comment about this, but I believe our AC parent is correct on this. Please good GP, go talk to someone about whatever is bothering you.
Um, how would we enjoy google then? I see the ads as pretty unobtriusive and have actively purchased items from them when I am looking for a product. For all that google gives us (thanks Gmail!) and their need to have a successful business for their shareholders and prospects for the future, they gotta get the renevue from somewhere. If it be ads that are a heck of a lot less obnoxious han most other ones (including ones see on/.) that keep google going, then I'm fine with it.
In Ironforge, near Tinker Town. They have a mechaniod museum there with some interesting exhibits. I stopped in there before making another linen run - man I've been playing too much WoW since it came out last week...
Um, I don't believe that that is correct, and I speak from having this exact scenario ocur two days ago. I have a wireless laptop for work and bring it with me onto the production floor for testing. I wanted to test connectivity to a certain switch port, so I plugged in a piece of cat 5 to the lappy. Ethernet got an IP just fine and I was working through that medium. Not saying its 100% wrong, but I never heard the parent before and it didn't happen to me. BTW - I double checked and I have SP2 on here.
Right (1/2 mile) outside of Philly, on what is known as the Main Line. A target rich environment for the entrepreunal sideline technician armed with a USB stick of clean up programs:)

Good point - sorry, the boss was coming so I was trying to finish up :) - I meant HTTP/WWW based

Be nice to see Belan come out of retirement as well for a good cause..
Seems to me Atari had a revival as well. Maybe this is not the last of Interplay. Sure hope not - I bought a lot of their games and liked em all.

When we are all enslaved to the storage cubes you may regret those words...
(I confess I did chuckle at the GP merely for the fact that I have not seen an overlord joke in a little bit on here.)
You could also give to the Violent Gamer Misfits' fund to help purchase additional basements...
/. is considered to be a media outlet (google news polls it for stories)...
Hmm - a good /.'ing is best done when a pretty link such as this is present. Taste the pain, Wandschneiders! *cackles with glee*
Welp, googling for them brought me to http://travel.lanfear.com/ rather quickly.
Marc and Samantha Wandschneider, you suburban looking, plain Jane looking couple, prepare for the slashdotting of your life! Muahahahahaha

I need to roll to see if you are getting drunk first...
I read that as "hockey sticks +1", and my first thought is that they were pretty low level players...

Mod parent up, and grandparent, there might be more than a few nuggets of truth in the parent's post...get yer asbestos undies ready.
<<< Granted most of the sites are not mainstream, and probably warez/mp3/p2p/porn... >>>
Jeese, I though warez/mp3/p2p/Pr0n WAS mainstream on the Internet these days...
