I really liked Word Pro back in 1997. I used it several years. It had many useful features. But when I changed to Windows 2000 it crashed all the time. So I changed to Office - simple as that. The fact was that the crashes I had with Windows 98 were so frequent, that changing to Office was a small price.

Anyway, I'm on a Mac now, using NeoOffice for more than a year. I don't use Office anymore on the Mac. NeoOffice is slow - no question about that. But it's workable. If you put many pictures in a document, then it's really slow. If you do difficult layout stuff, same story.

NeoOffice looks a bit like Mozilla did several years ago. Then came Phoenix, the browser only version, now better known as Firefox. Mozilla was a slow browser. Firefox is clean and fast (well maybe not if you install a ton of extensions - but that's your own fault).

And I really would like IBM (more than Apple) to jump in and help them out. But on the other hand, isn't Sun supposed to do that?!?!

  6. Fix java first on Microsoft drops VBA in Mac Office 2007 · · Score: 2, Interesting

OpenOffice is working on an Aqua version that can run natively on OSX. I suppose that will run faster than NeoOffice.

    From their mission statement:

To develop OpenOffice.org on the Mac OS X platform.

At the moment this means producing continued releases of the X11 version of OpenOffice for the Mac, and the removal of X11 as a requirement thus making OpenOffice more Mac like. Once OpenOffice Aqua is released, the team will focus on making OpenOffice adhere to the Apple HCI guidelines.

For me, NeoOffice works, and I've been using it since more than a year. The big problem here is not NeoOffice, but Java Swing I believe, as NeoOffice is java-based. Java is slow on the Mac, and that should be fixed! Try to use Eclipse, then NeoOffice is lightning speed.

But you should recognize it as your brain and body telling you to get out now, you're killing it!

The body has its own ways of telling it wants to quit, even if the brain keeps on denying the signals. In WWI many soldiers went blind suddenly, without any reason. Many soldiers couldn't walk anymore. But when tested using clever tricks, it was clear they could see or walk. It was simply the body taking over the decision, giving them a reason to get out of that horrible situation.

Just recently I met a teenager who's legs felt like pudding. Sometimes she just fell on the ground, couldn't walk. She was showing all the signs of burnout or chronic stress. Her parents denied her problems - the cause of this - said she was faking, which made it impossible for her to handle the situation. This was her body taking over the decision.

Call it life. Some people just have a more difficult time handling life. And as pressure is increasing on people, more people crack and get sick. By the way, they say 90% of all sickness is stress-related, that cold or flue or whatever. It just comes out in different ways in different people.

Burnout is work related. By definition. I've had a discussion about it with several pro's in the field. When it has to do with work, they call it "burnout". When it's nothing to do with work, it's called chronic stress or something else. It's stupid, but that's the definition. I believe this makes it easier to blame the employer in a legal sense.

But I put a lot of effort in those questions. If I'm going to ask someone to look into my problems, I may as well give them all that I have. I report back if someone answers, and try to make it into some kind of solution that hopefully other people will find using a search engine.

The bonus is that in doing this, I make an overview of the problem, and suddenly see all kind of new ways to look at it. Quite often that is good enough to solve the problem myself.

So true! People only think of Africa and the Third World as if over there everyone is so poor they're starving to death, or they're fighting and killing eachother. This is the picture that's in the news. But this is only a small part of the truth. Many people in Africa have a good life, although maybe primitive in our eyes if they don't have proper roads and cable tv and microwaves and cell phones. But if they have a house, a proper meal, clean water and electricity, they have a good basis. Small businesses, students, schools, they all can profit from these laptops, whether they cost $100 or $150. So this laptop is not meant for homeless kids who sell it immediately for some food or glue, but it is a way of introducing kids and adults who have a basic standard of living with new technology that can really help them.
