  2. Teach College Courses on What Do People in the IT Field Do for Side Jobs? · · Score: 1

This has been a nearly ideal side job for me. It allows me to stay current on topics and has a finite schedule that I can plan around (one evening every other week). Plus it looks good on the resume! Even with just a bachelor's degree you can often teach for the local community college. That is what I started with.

  3. Re:Hmmm on North American Corporate Privacy Comparison · · Score: 1

Further, don't laws actually codify WHAT the "right thing to do" is, so that we all agree upon it? Also laws help clarify and reverse other things that used to be the "right thing".
For example copyright fair use used to be the "right thing". Now the DMCA is the "right thing".

Yet one of the factors they ask is when you feel most awake. Doesn't asking that almost give it away for them? I mean if I already know when I feel most active/awake, why am I taking their survey.

In the review the suggest turning off the keyboard light when away to maximize life. Which makes sense. But like I will actually do that. Its the KEYBOARD it should know when your away, say maybe a feature to turn off after no key pressed for five minutes or so.

  7. Bread Machine on Cooking with the Internet? · · Score: 1

The geek's answer to baking. Jump all the ingredients in, and let it churn for 3 hours. Also works very good for making dough for such things as Pizza. I've used this site for bread machine recipes.

  8. That's the problem with closed technologies on DRM Technology To Be Added To MP3 Format · · Score: 1, Interesting

That's the problem with closed technologies like MP3. Sure its open in the sense that you can implement applications that support it. But its destinay is controlled by Thomson and Fraunhofer, if they decide to sell out to the likes of DRM that's their choice. Its their protocol and their patents. This is why an truly open protocol, such as OGG will likely become the standard song swapping medium. Especially as players begin to support it. Besides, WHO says we have to use the new MP3 format anyway?

  9. Major Consideration in Choosing a Web Host on UUNet Is The Number 1 Spam Host · · Score: 5, Insightful

The spammyness of your web hosting ISP can be a major factor. When you sign up with a host company, either dedicated or shared, you are assigned an IP address from their "pool". If you get an IP from a former spammer life is not good!

I got an IP address that was blacked listed by SPEWS once. Much of my email would not work and the web host company would not change my IP. They suggested I contact SPEWS. I later learned that the host company was a spammer magnet and I was not alone. I switched companies and all is well.

  10. Re:WP in Law Offices on WordPerfect Back From the Wilderness · · Score: 0

A family member a lawyer, and back when I was in college I installed a Novell Lan with WordPerfect. Very common in most law firms at the time.

What finally pushed them to upgrade was the new secretaries that they were hireing did not know the product. For the older works DOS/Wordperfect was fine, and the lawyers did not use computers, so if it worked they were good with it.

About five years ago we upgraded to a peer-to-peer Windows network using MS-Office Small Business Edition. But practically speaking I think the old DOS/WP solution could have lasted much much longer if they could have continued support.

Besides, its not like the "script kiddie" even has to be smart enought to code the virus in the first place. Often just capture one in the wild and modify it a bit to pick on your favorite target. Or for the REALLY weak on programming skills, just use a virus writer like this.
