One of those links was titled "what about IMAP." When I clicked on that, it said that the document was not available. Ya, I would really like IMAP a lot more than pop.

It's possible that they sent us some "bad" cards... I didn't think about that. Also, I wasn't the primary source of updates. Like you said, Windows Update isn't an enterprise-class solution. We had some software (I can't remember the name right now) that pushed out updates. There were some cases where it would miss updates or wouldn't work right, especially on older PCs, and I still had to manually update other applications (Acrobat Reader, Diskeeper, etc.) So I would check Windows Update when I did routine maintenance anyway.

I was working as as PC tech for a university at one point, and it was policy to install all critical Windows updates on the university-owned computers. On one computer, I accidentally checked the hardware updates as well as the critical updates. For some reason, Windows update decided that the video card (an Nvidia TNT2-based card) needed to be updated with the old, Microsoft-provided, French-language video drivers. This computer was using English Windows XP, and there were no language packs installed or anything. Anyway, Windows blue-screened when coming back up. I had to start it in safe-mode and remove the drivers to get it to work again. I remember thinking that if a "normal" user had installed that update, they would have been screwed into having to pay $100 for a "professional" to fix Windows. After that, I started paying attention to the hardware updates. And I noticed that on approximately 5/100 of their computers, Microsoft listed the French-language Nvidia driver as an appropriate hardware update.

I have a computer that I built almost exactly two years ago. When I built it, all of the parts used had been released within the previous 6 months. So everything on there is younger than 3 years, at the oldest. As of September, the chipset driver hadn't been updated since Vista was in beta and the sound driver offered "limited support." All of the games that I tried ran about 75% as fast as the did in XP. A couple didn't work at all.

Actually, the only thing I had a problem with in this whole situation was that the police hit him with a taser. There were plenty of police to drag him out if they wanted to. A taser isn't supposed to be used as a cattle prod.

I have to agree. Police seem to break out the taser whenever someone pisses them off, regardless of whether its use is warranted. Even watching COPS on TV, I have seen them taser suspects for not immediately following an order. A taser is not a cattle prod. It is a replacement for the club that police officers used to use. And it should only be used in cases where it would have previously been appropriate to use a club. It would not have been acceptable to smack this guy in the head with a club, so it shouldn't be acceptable to shock him with a taser either.

So in any situation that the police have the itch to use their taser, they should ask themselves, "Would it be acceptable to smack this guy in the head with a club?" And if the answer is no, then the police shouldn't use a taser either.
