But being that this is Slashdot I'm sure a mildly accurate, yet ludicrous, diagnoses can be reached without any actual input from the Japanese guys.

  2. Same old song and dance on New Study Fails To Show That Violent Video Games Diminish Prosocial Behavior · · Score: 2

Like anything else, a large majority of people can easily shift from fantasy to reality and maintain a reasonable and healthy social morale. If you take a sample size from a pool of kids who have been bullied and constantly picked-on you're going to find a propensity to act out whether it be video games, TV or learned behavior from their environment.

The constant "Does too!" and "Does Not!" debates from both sides of the gaming==evil_people debate are pointless because both arguments have some truth to them yet aren't directed at fixing the actual underlying problem. All this debate does is perpetuate the rising cost of games, or end up in stupid regulation which falls short of fixing anything.

  4. Self taught programmers on Who Will Teach U.S. Kids To Code? Rupert Murdoch · · Score: 2

All the amazing programmers I've ever known started out self taught. They all have a back-story about how they had "this old machine.." or they would "go into computer lab on study hall.." or "..spent hours typing in the code out of the magazine..".

I don't think you can effectively "Teach" programming as a large portion of it is right-brained, but making some sort of CS syllabus available is a great idea for kids that actually want it. With all the action to abolish public education, I am dubious about any suggestions founded by capitalist juggernauts.

I don't know how you expect to keep things in sequence and accommodate dropped packets without implementing a sequencing and transmission protocol. With that in mind, you've just recreated TCP.

What's more likely is Google will create a TCP protocol (you must accept the EULA) which forwards a copy of everyone's session to Google. When you make a request to, say weather.com, Google will then serve you cached results from previous cached sessions to make things faster by eliminating network hops to weather.com. Muhahahahaha...

perhaps another race has sent a probe at us? And if so, how would we spot it?

Most likely the probe would contain simple life forms which would try to blend in with society by assuming places of privileged power. The kind of power to pass legislation or create policies to give them better leverage over the populace as a whole.

It would not be difficult to spot, however it would be difficult to extricate them once they become resident as they would almost certainly ascertain some control over local and national media in order to sway public opinion in places where rhetoric and ignorance can easily give them political footholds in which to extend their residence.
