Listen maybe I wasn't clear. I agree it was very nice of Mr. Gates to do this. Frankly I admire the guy (although I don't always agree with him).
That said all I'm saying is look at this gift in scale. Much has been made of the size of this donation, his is a little less than Mr. gates spent on his Porsche 959 that he can't drive on the street.
His gift although nice is no greater than other gifts given by other people no matter size. It's just hype, news and in the end a tax break.
I don't doubt the sincerity of the gift or that Mr. Gates truly want to help these kids but if you look at it from a business standpoint.
800 mill will not go far in this cause but will make a nice tax break for a man who makes that much cashing in stock in a weekend. It will take something like 12 billion to do this for 90% of kids in the poorest countries.
I think he is right on for trying appeal it should be an opt-in system. The problem is that the climate in government these days is more restrictive and involved than ever before and sadly this will go nowhere.
I know that both earthlink and verizon do. I was testing a James mail server on my earthlink account and I could only send outgoing mail to earthlink customers or myself. I found it really annoying that night, but overall I think it is a good idea. If you want to run a mail server get a pemium conection.
I read this an I don't see how the internet really played into this "Roy" commiting his crime.
This guy is in deep denial, in my opinion he is trying to snow his way out of doing his probation. He will tell you anything you want to hear. If it was not Instant messenger it would have been listening in on her phone calls or reading her diary.
I bet when she was in second grade and he was doing that same "spider game" he didn't have the internet to prod him on. "And then I discovered, in a statement his stepdaughter made to the police, that some of the troubling touches, through clothes, began when she was in second grade."
Sadly some right wing dingbat will ignore that and blame the internet for all his ills and try to save us all from his fate.
His response to those Slashdot is so funny.

The logic eludes me. "In response to those Slashdot readers who obviously didn't bother to read this article properly"
If they didn't read the article properly the first time why post a response at the top of that same article to people who did not read it "properly" in the first place?
As funny as it is I agree the first few posts to this really miss the point. He isn't saying it's all bad.
As technical people we all have folk in our lives that are foolish enough to give out there email on shady sites and download and install spyware. And ask us to fix it.
This week alone I have helped several people in my personal life and co-workers get rid of junk either they or the person before them had installed on their machine.
If these folk are taking their virus ridden, spyware laden computers from the network.... well great!
I hate to be that guy and say they should not use a computer but it's true. I would cut them some slack a year ago but to be complaining that the spyware you installed on your computer is the last straw and you are giving up your dsl? All I can say is...bye!
I knew I was playing too much Warcraft (custom map DOTA to be exact) when my 3 year old daughter came running down the isle at target holding a WC3 box yelling "Daddy, Daddy it's your game! Woot!"
Yes sadly I no longer use that exclamation. My wife tells this story way too much.
I may not agree with the argument but I can see it being argued.
Some spyware company sues over this piece of software hindering it's ability to provide advertising to it's customers by unfairly identifying it as spyware.
I can see it now: "Our customers want popups to have a better understanding of their options as they surf the net. They agreed to the terms and conditions of our software, by M$ removing our software and lableing it spyware they have defamed out company, our product, and cost us a boat load of cash. Er uh and OJ didn't do it!"
This is a complete abuse of power. Nobody believes these were terrorist acts nor do they believe this man is a terrorist so why bring him up on charges of terrorism?
More to the point who is this law suppose to stop the terrorists? Does anyone believe that the terrorists would think twice about pointing one of these things at a plane because they might go to prison for 25 years? Hell make it 100 years we are talking about people who are ok with strapping a bomb to themselves and running into a crowd then setting off the bomb. This law is strictly for the purpose of violating the rights of american citizens.
I wonder if I can get good pizza in Canada?
There are some fine gems in this piece but he needs to get to the point faster and look at things more objectivly(less pure MS bashing). I'm no Hemingway but this was very sloppy.
I agree with all of the folk who are backing paypal as a backup. When I set up someone with a payment solution I more often than not push for a pay with pay pal option. With this option you have the backup you are looking for and you also open the door to the customers that like to pay with paypal and since they don't charge a recurring fee you have a no real cost backup.
I also like authorize.net they are very reliable and good tech support.
I love that they put up a spy pop under when you hit search.

Please put a bunch of magnets on a fan and have it swing past my hard drive. Why don't you save time and effort and not install a hardrive in my machine. Or am I missing something?

1978: The first internet E-mail spam, sent by DEC
Einar Stefferud, a longtime net hand, reports that DEC announced a new DEC-20 machine in 1978 by sending an invite to all ARPANET addresses on the west coast, using the ARPANET directory, inviting people to receptions in California. They were chastised for breaking the ARPANET appropriate use policy, and a notice was sent out reminding others of the rule.

I know nothing will but it's nice to hope and something will work eventually.
A friend sent me an evite a month ago I checked my spam filter today and it has blocked over 500 emails to my email in the last 2 days. I wonder if I could file for sexual harrassment considering most of the email either want to improve my size, stamina, or show me dirty pictures. Any lawyers out there want to do a pro bono case?
