  1. Re:i remember that... on Best Buy Confirms 'Secret' Version of its Website · · Score: 1

There has to be a better, faster interface for finding in-store prices than an exact mock-up of the bestbuy.com website. Not to mention that an intranet site could have more useful info like items in stock, when more are expected in that store, what section/aisle of the store it's located in (or whatever).
There is. Well, there used to be. I worked at BB when they rolled out ReTek and Tivoli, which are now the back end for all store inventory and .com control. Before then though, there were the "green screens", or a bunch of old IBM terminals that got into the main database at corporate and found qty, location, price, etc. To fudge the numbers there, would've been an Enron fiasco since that's what the accountants worked off of.

People complain about large companies buisness practices, when we ourselves are always looking to cheat them in some form. (IE. incorrect pricing on website, peeling price stickers, etc)
  2. radio on Google Radio Ads Experiencing Early Troubles · · Score: 1

I run a few radio stations using the "google" automation system. Here's how it worked out... Scott Studios was purchased by dMarc broadcasting a few years back, which was an Up-and-coming conglomerate. They had quite the national ad base. Then google purchased dMarc, and thus the RevenueSuite system was born. Stations pay for the computers by playing ads from google on the air. After the computers are paid off (about 24 months later) the station can opt to keep in the RevenueSuite system and just get cash for unsold commercial inventory. It's rather cool actually, and may keep terrestrial radio alive, for a few more years anyways.

Furnace filters (cheap ones) are only a few bucks each, and change them at the end of each summer. The monitor i did a similar thing to with plexiglass, and a filter lid on top. Power is always on, and a power strip is the control. Very simple, costed about $30 to make and is durable. The PC came from compgeeks.com for about $130 (p3-600 crashpaq), same with the monitor. Optical cheap labtec mouse, equally cheap keyboard. It's not hard to do... Just use your imagination. (and mine's in a machine shop for autobody work, so you can imagine how dirty my stuff gets :) )

When i worked for a large ISP in MN, we were providing DSL from Qworst and Northpoint. The biggest battle back then was that you could NOT get a line without voice services for DSL. Who pushed that? QWEST. Now they're going to do it? Go figure. On the upside, if they wanted, they could use the entire copper spectrum for the DSL instead of everything below 25khz, thus opening up the floodgates, as it were. But i think that's the part they don't want you to know... (Think northpoint, who just rented copper from the CLEC/ILEC and ran a virtual T1 over the pair) The other big players were wholly against this as well, since it'd cut into the cashflow... Then again, this was in the era of one-way cable modems, and DSL was the best bang for the buck... Just a thought...
