True, true. I still remember the time I saw the gossip-column item about Paris Hilton "DJ'ing" at some club somewhere. I was hoping the story ended with a sinkhole or radioactive comet or Armin Van Buuren breaking a 12" over her head, but it tragically never happened.

  4. I think the first thing you need to decide... on Learning to DJ? · · Score: 4, Informative

...is what do you consider a DJ? Do you want to scratch for a nu-metal band like DJ Lethal? Do you want to back a hip-hop act? Do you want to produce your own beats and DJ for crowds like Tiesto? Do you want to be one of those guys who plugs his iPod into a sound system and says he's a DJ? Do you want to use vinyl, or take the digital way out?

Answer that question, and then you can start down the road.

    Ahem...

FUCK [successful_musician_X]! WHY SHOULD I PAY $20 FOR AN ALBUM WHEN SHE ALREADY HAS ALL THAT MONEY?!

It's just interesting how many people draw such a broad line in the ethical sand when it comes to the RIAA "ripping off artists," but how few of those people will choose to stand on the side of the line that includes *going without* all that blood-tainted music.

And why on earth would you support allofmp3.com? You might be "technically" legal, but ethically... well, I don't want this to turn into a personal attack. I'll just offer my opinion, which is that I'd much rather steal my music and be honest about it than give money to the Russian mob so that I can feel better about myself for "paying" for my music.

While the rest of the town/village/tribe is learning basic computer skills, someone from that group who took to the technology quickly could be taught to function as support. Help from within as opposed to without, and all that.
That having been said, I really have to question the accuracy of this article. How often do you see somone quoted as saying "geez" in the middle of a business story? The whole thing seems a bit suspect to me.

Blizzard told CmdrTaco to change a name he had been using for awhile because it violated the game rules.

    Except it didn't.
    From Taco's post...
First of all, the reason that my account is in violation is that my name contains a title prefix. It took dozens of inquiries to get that explained. 'Cmdr' is the problem. I'm told that since the game has an internal honor system with titles, my name is not allowed. Never mind the fact that 'Cmdr' is not one of their titles. Never mind that countless other titles abound in the game: Mr, Sir, Sensei.
The name change isn't the issue as much as the completely random and inconsistent enforcement of rules (that may or may not be rules) by nameless, faceless people who live behind a wall of form letters, canned answers, and "we don't have to explain ourselves to you, citizen!" attitudes.

No, no, no. You're looking at it all wrong. With all power and control removed from the studios, the people of the internet will finally be able to truly liberate the artistic vision that they've been suppressing for so long! I mean, if they took all those brilliant ideas and stories that they have to Hollywood then they'd just end up with some fat-cat executive throwing fistfulls of *money* at them to go rent equipment and hire crew to go whore themselves out and, y'know, film something! What kind of capitalist stooge sellouts do you think they are? Because the internet makes it so easy to "share art " without actually paying anybody anything, we've taken the power of production away from the people who have had the skills to earn a living at their craft for years and put it into the most powerfully creative force the world has ever known - internet message board posters.

Yes, actors are replaceable. Actors are paid modest amounts. Movie stars, however, are not. Movie stars are paid huge amounts. Actors and movie stars are two completely different things. When audiences consistently show up in huge numbers to see the same actor and cause huge profits, that actor has become a movie star and quite rightfully gets an enormous payday.

And what in the world does an actor's paycheck have to do with development time?

The only people on earth who thought that was a good idea were Napster's accountants. It's not even rent-to-own, it's just pay-to-listen. > No-one should expect to be able to live for the rest of their life on a few years worth of good work, with no additional value added. As a programmer, I certainly dont. If I write something that sells well, I can expect to get a couple of years out of it at the most.

So what you're saying is this. If you write a useful and clever program that sells well, and in 2008 there are still people lined up at your doorstep throwing wads of $50's at your head for that exact same program - even though you haven't written a single line of code since - you're going to say "No, no, folks - keep your money! I shouldn't expect to keep getting money for something that's two years old! Take those dollars and buy some Jessica Simpson albums, as the White Album is far too old to pay money for!"

Maybe it's just me and the fact that I'm (somewhat) an artist, but I have *no* problem with spending money on music, films, art, whatever inspires me and makes my life better - no matter how old they are. Would I feel better if the money I spent on "Citizen Kane" went to Welles' family instead of a media conglomerate? Of course I would. But that media conglomerate produces things that I value just as much as - if not more than - food, water, and shelter, and so I'm ready to kick in some coin fifty years after the film was made just to make sure that more movies keep coming down the pike. Art is what keeps me going, and at the end of the day the artists can't live on attention and fans. They need cold hard cash to pay the rent, and I'm damned sure going to help out. I don't care if Paul McCartney ever writes another note in his life, but if he calls me up and says "Hey man, can you spot me $10?" I'm going to say "I remember 'Hey Jude'... here's $20, and keep the change." The song may be decades old, but in 2006 it's still worth money to me.
