I was kind of under the impression that this move was masterminded by Microsoft (via the multi-billion dollar deal they had with Sun) as an attempt to fragment the Open Source community. I could be very wrong, but it seems to make the most sense that way. The real question is whether Sun's license is compatible with the GPL.
This is from the company that said the Playstation 2 would have Toy Story quality graphics, and be able to render FF8 quality FMVs in real time (thus making FMVs no longer required). It was essentially that bullshit hype that killed the Dreamcast... so yeah, now they're at it again.
Maybe I'll be proven wrong, but I doubt their system will be able to do anywhere near what they say it can in practical application.
The problem is not that reading/seeing/playing a game involving some concept may cause you to think about doing it in reality. The problem is the "more easily influenced" people who actually would forget about the barrier between reality and fantasy and act on the urges.
If playing GTA can make you commit real-life crimes, then watching the History Channel can make you commit genocide, and either way you are a nutjob who should be locked away. That's just my opinion, anyway.
But we need to recognize the immersiveness that games today have vs. something that is shown on the history channel. On the history channel, you are neither in control of the "genocide", nor are you exposed to prolonged periods of extreme violence.
The reason I bring up GTA and not things like History channel specials, is that I've never been tempted to do anything bad after watching the history channel (no matter how violent the show's content may be). We're talking about fully functioning and normal adults who are sizing up cars after playing GTA, not little kids who would be influenced by anything. The simple fact is that other forms of entertainment aren't nearly as immersive as present day videogames, and I think we're best off if we recognize this.
Sure, someone who is profoundly influenced by GTA is probably a little nutty in the first place, but I don't like the idea that videogames are the thing that could push someone over the edge.
++ This is something I've talked about with many of my friends. After playing a lot of GTA, almost all of my friends feel the same way -- they start sizing up cars and getting tempted to hop in a running car. We're all level headed people and we would never actually do it, but I can't imagine what those who are more easily influenced would do.
This is one of the reason I call bullshit on anyone who says that videogames can't actually spawn violence, or that it's easy to entirely differentiate between videogames and real life. I'd like to hear more opinions on this.
I believe there are now exploits in the wild, or exploits poised to get out in the wild -- which is why the rating was increased.
Having a vulnerability is like having a broken lock on a window. An exploit of that vulnerability is a burgular who is going around your neighborhood using windows as the entry point. In my opinion, exploits are a more serious concern than the vulnerability itself and warrant the increased amount of news on the topic.
I did a google search for the Redmond coordinates. I live somewhat close to Redmond (under 200 miles), and I'm pretty familiar with Washington state coords, but I wanted to be semi exact. I suppose I could've looked up the Microsoft campus coordinates, but I figured being within a tenth or so was good enough. I'll check out WorldWind... sounds like a cool program. No Linux or OS X bins though eh?
I think it'd be better if the Air Force was on our side. Just call up someone high on the inside " We're gonna need an unmanned airstrike at 122.125 west 47.681 north. Yeah, it's Fallujah."
Darwin is licensed under the Apple Public Source License (APSL), which is a non-free license in Stallman's opinion.
The current revision of the Apple license is considered "free" by Stallman. The info is on this page. Both versions of the license are on the page. Version 2 of the license is listed under GPL-Incompatible, Free Software Licenses. Version 1.x of the APSL is listed under Non-Free Software Licenses.
Forgive a bit of humor in the midst of tragedy, but it seems that Apple has led the pack yet again, only to be copied by Microsoft.
Seriously though, I think donating a little bit of money is the least one of us can do. It really puts things in perspective when something like this happens.
It's bastards like you that sue for stupid ass reasons and cause there to be disclaimers and warnings on everything. I'm sick of seeing disclaimers and warnings on stuff.
I'm sorry, but I reviewed the fight from a couple different perspectives (downloaded multiple copies from limewire), and I think that the fans deserve most of the blame. Many of those punkass detroit fans deserve to be knocked out.
Artest saw the guy who threw the cup on him, and went directly after that guy. The players never tried to involve the fans, the fans involved themselves. I wish the guy who threw the cup had gotten socked harder.
Not to say that the Pacers don't deserve their penalties, but imho, the Pistons fans are the one that need to be set straight.
I guess you can't expect much better from a place like Detroit though.
You can downgrade the dashboard (the interface you see at boot), allowing you to install Linux or whatever. http://www.xbox-linux.org/Software_Method_HOWTO
The difficult part however, is acquiring the downgraded dashboard (which you can install via the Mechassault game). And no, you don't need a modchip to install Linux on your xbox. Don't plan on using Xbox live if are going to trick out your xbox though.
The 'streamer' is there so you can see where the rocket landed even if you're far away, not to slow down the descent. Usually the streamers are made with a metallic color so they reflect light. This has actually helped me find my model rocket a couple times after I blasted it off and it landed a quarter mile away.
To slow down the descent you still want a good ol fashioned parachute to come out.
Do we have to dissect every good thing that people do?
Let's dissect some other things:
your mom doesn't really love you for you, she loves you because of how you make her feel.
The fireman who saves you in the building is really only doing it because he wants his buddies to call him a hero.
Someone who gives a homeless person a dollar is only doing it because they don't want to get shot by the homeless man.
Your fiancee is only marrying you because she doesn't want to have to be self-sufficient.
and finally: Stallman does what he does to impress the ladies.;)
Can't we just let people do good things sometimes? There is always some element of selfishness in every good deed we do. Let it go. It's a win win situation. Bill gives a great contribution to a school, and he gets to pimp himself a little. so the fuck what.
If one news station calls an election, the others follow that call. Call them lemmings, but no news station wants to be the last to call an election. I was watching CNN at the time, and was watching the florida count numbers coming in, was aware that it was incredibly obvious that Gore could still carry the state (and not even that difficult), and then had my jaw drop when I heard them say something to the effect of... "wait, we're getting the news that Florida has been called for Bush..."
According to Kopel "At 10:00 p.m., which networks took the lead in retracting the premature Florida win for Gore? They were CNN and CBS, not Fox." Backed up by http://www.cbsnews.com/htdocs/c2k/pdf/REPFINAL.pdf
Please, then - offer your explanation of why the "Felon Purge List" had over 20,000 African Americans, but less than 50 hispanics (I assume you're talking about Database Technologies and the purge list).
I cannot. I'm not aware of the felon demographic in Florida. I'm open to ideas as to why the error existed, but I think it's sleezy on Moore's part to imply it was an intentional act on the part of Bush to win the election.
That is completely true.
Vacation implies no work. Dictionary.com says vacation is "A period of time devoted to pleasure, rest, or relaxation, especially one with pay granted to an employee."
Watch the administration official dance around the question as to whether Bush ever read it, it's quite amusing.
He can't honestly say whether or not Bush read it because he doesn't know for sure. Just like I couldn't say that you've seen F911. I assume that you have, but if I was asked, I'd have to say that I couldn't say one way or the other, just that I assume that you have.
Here's a couple examples:
Both your sources show that many planes were allowed to fly on the 13th. Granted, most of the flights were made so airliners could relocate their aircraft, but they were flights nonetheless.
Please, back up that they were.
I'll try to find info. (I might've been incorrect on that one.. assume so until I find backup evidence)
No, of course the Kopel page isn't full of absolute truths. But, if you're going to watch F911, I think it'd be smart to make an effort to read both the Kopel page and the Michael Moore war room before coming to a decision. I know too many people that take F911 as gospel, and its irritating. (but then again, people who take gospel like gospel are a bit mislead as well:P)
I disagree. Now, point to specifics, or this debate is going to go nowhere fast.
Some of Moore's implications are technically fair, but deceptive nonetheless (similar to when Bush would mince 9/11 and Saddam Hussein in a speech, so careless listeners would associate the two)
I'll be quick. The details are on Kopel's page.
* Implying that Fox somehow had the ability to change all the other Networks stance on who won Florida, when this was not the case at all.
*Implying that a member of the Bush admin hired a company to turn away African American voters at the polls.
*Implying that Gore won the election no matter what. If the recount method Gore request had been allowed to finish, Bush would've won.
*Implying that Bush vacationed 42 percent of the time in his first six months, with the implication that Bush can't do work away from the whitehouse (slashdotters should know the ease with which offlocation work can be done)
*Implying that Bush didn't read the briefing mentioning the potential terrorist threat.
*Implying that there were no flights allowed in the air when the saudis left the country.
*Implying that the Bin Ladens weren't at all questioned before leaving the air.
Everything there has already been debunked in the War Room. If you want to discuss specifics with me, don't just post a link, post a particular. If not, every time you point me to that site, I'll point you to the War Room.
No, the war room skirts around the issues. Read more closesly at Kopel's page, he includes counters of Michael's "War room" counter arguments. There is so much goddamn spin and sleight of hand in F911 that it's difficult for me to take seriously at all. It's not that he isn't mostly accurate factually, its that he implies so much bullshit that you begin to drown in it half way though.
Carefully read through kopels page, and then read Moore's counter arguments, before you come to a decision on just how good of fact check Moore's war room does.
I can't stand what EA did with Goldeneye: Rogue Agent. They're whoring the name of a great game for no reason other than to make money.
It's almost as bad as what happened with Napster (taking a famous name and rebranding it on something else for $$)
If you fail to resubscribe do you lose the right to use the software?

Yeah, they solved that problem a long time ago. It's called a vibrator.
I'm sorry, but Sony can kiss my ass.

When mods stop giving gratuitous mod points for redundant statements, let us know.

Yes.
It's bastards like you that sue for stupid ass reasons and cause there to be disclaimers and warnings on everything. I'm sick of seeing disclaimers and warnings on stuff.
That won't happen. It would allow saavy users to make high quality pirated copies of brand new movies, which would be the MPAA's worst nightmare.
