Well, the average data-accessing Indian would earn between $17 and $52 a day. That's about about 80% - 85% of the mobile population in cities with 3G. And even so, those clocking data downloads in GB's is a much smaller number.
All that said, I've been thinking.. Maybe it's a combination of the sheer numbers of users and competition between providers that allows Indian providers to keep the rates so low.. With 80,000 to 130,000 new registrations a day (for data connections), I suppose the numbers do kind of pile up.
Here in India, you pay $2.45 for a 1GB chunk. Larger chunks, cost even less. 5GB goes for just over $6!! Pay-as-you-go is all fine if one sticks to small data transfers, but in the long run, is certainly not worth it. Works out to many times the cost.
I understand that fewer players in the market tends to resist cost reduction, but seriously, $500 per GB is ridiculous, right? What am I missing here?
"the industry" is motherboard manufacturers, RAM manufacturers, etc.. Seriously speaking, there are very very few hobbyists would even think of building their own motherboards.
They merely buy stuff off the shelf and put it together. They're the consumers, not the industry.
There's nothing wrong in genetically altering stuff. Nature does it all the time. The difference though, is that we don't call our tweaking "Evolution" as we ought to.:|
So basically, the Canadians have lost all access to their 'highly classified information' while foreigners can access it leisurely? What about foreigners in Canada? And Canadians who're abroad? Or are we to assume that the databases somehow knows whether there's a foreigner sitting at the computer or a Canadian?
Offer it to those in Prison and then send those who don't want to go.:P
But being realistic, I would never recommend such a thing. They'll grow a planet-full of Axe-Murders and Earth haters. I don't think you want all that blood on your hands.:)
Talking about someone else and their responsibilities is a nasty thing. A human being might have varying priorities in life and raising kids might not be as high up on his list as space exploration or peeing his name in the snow for that matter. Do you think such a person would do a great job of being a dad and a father to three kids if you tied him down to Earth and said "No, you have 3 kids, take care of them!". He'd probably resent that idea enough to d something nasty to them.
Yes such things get us concerned. No, they should not. And No, it's a lousy idea if ever we decided to act pon our concerns for other peoples responsibilities.
And I tend to agree with you. Any one as selfish as that's gotta be a really lousy person. I'm not sure if I love you or hate you for your comment, but I sure as hell don't think it deserves a flame.:P
With repeated usage, some men could be trained to aim into the receptacle instead of splashing all around it.:) Talk about incentive!
In the future, The first time you use one of these loos, you will be prompted to enter your name and other random information. DNA material that is urinated will then be used to identify repeat users, this would help to maintain local and global high-score lists.
But if that's not a TiE fighter, I can't imagine what else it could be! The empire will be unloading storm troopers soon. Is no one else worried? Arrgh! Open your arms wide if you like, and go "Greetings! We're Earthlings.. Command us!" I for one am planning to escape.
On another note, can someone mirror this? They seem to be having trouble holding their servers up. It's high time server admin manuals contained a chapter on how to survive being slashdotted.
You make a very good case, and explain it very well. Thanks for the clarification. I figured they'd have to dig up volcanic rocks to figure out the nature of pole movement, but I did not account for the the mammoth extent of the task.
Just so I'm clear about this, does the south pole wander too, or is it relatively static?
Assuming that the wandering is caused by variations in the flow of sub-surface magma, is it possible to measure the same from the surface, or are we restricted to looking through lava tubes and eruption orifices?
I should have put it across with better clarity. My bad..:(
What I mean to say is that no one knows if the speed-up of the pole-wandering is a natural cycle or if it is a natural cycle (as opposed to it being a natural occurrence).
Shifting poles was not in my mind at the time, but thanks for the wiki-link. Very interesting stuff indeed!:)
A speed-up of the pole-wandering, if unexpected, suggests the lack of historic data describing similar speed increases. We know it's wandering rapidly today, but we don't know if it's normal.
Technically, even that's putting to much room into a headline.. something akin to "Satellite-based Laser helps to conduct Woodpecker surveys" would be more realistic I think.:-D The satellite does not do any surveying of its own.:)
Regardless of what so many seem to believe, I think it's a ridiculous lawsuit. If she wanted no one to see them, she should have hung her underclothes somewhere where no one would see them whilst not intruding upon her property.
It's not like the google street view van entered her property and took pictures. It was unintentional sure, but it was perfectly legal. She publically displayed underwear, even though they were situated upon private property. It's perfectly legal to take pictures of it and do whatever you feel with them.
Just the way your front door or your garden might be situated on private property, but the reason you keep it painted or the reason you mow the lawn is because you're displaying it publicly. She needs to take a deep breath, swallow, and then set out on an arduous long journey toward getting a life!
She has no case. I can't see what all the confusion here is about.:|
If they plan to sell them in 2012, I'm sure half the mobile phones on the market would outperform them atom cores by miles. No idea what MS was thinking.
But then again, I'm not supposed to worry. I don't work for them.:)
I suppose you've updated that in your blag? ;) http://xkcd.com/148/

A Déjà vu is usually a glitch in the Matrix. It happens when they change something....
Cool! We can now ingest cameras and then poop them into a disposal chute! From the mouth to the anus; camera superhighway!
Either it's "Newly discovered", or it's really something that never existed before and is therefore "New". I think it unlikely that this is "New!".

I'm sure MI5 could turn a polish spy into revealing something about his people. Scientists should think out-of-the-box for once!
The funny thing is.... No one knows if this speed-up is a natural cycle, or if there's really something out of whack with the core.
Either way, who cares? I'm still waiting for the space-travel thingy those ministers of finance refused to fund?

actually, it says "over", not more... I obviously did not rtfa very intently. :|
The article says "more than" I assume that by 3.5 they'd mean 4. :)
