To clarify, I joined the website. I know they aren't taking registrations yet, but I plan to join once it becomes possible. Sorry if I misled you. I do, however, fully support their cause and hopefully I can spread awareness about the Pirate Party.

  3. Wow on Macrovision Wants Old DRM to Work Forever · · Score: 3, Insightful

This is another reason why I joined the US Pirate Party. The laws need to be reformed and the DMCA needs to be replaced with a more sensible, consumer friendly version. I'm simply sick of being told what I can and what I can't do with my legally purchased media, as long and I don't like that trying to make it into a rent style system.

We need to form together to help change these laws. I believe joining the Pirate Party may be a start to this. Boycotting also works effectively, but only if enough people do it. Raising awareness of these issues is also a very good thing to do as many people simply aren't aware that it happening until it is too late. Even just trying to talk to your representatives may help things as most of th time they aren't even aware of these types of issues or if they don't listen, then vote for someone else next time. If we can get enough people to realize what is really occuring, then change can happen.

A rumor has been flying around that Xbox 360 will be available at Best Buy on the 18th. They should be getting the units a couple days before that and must hold them until the 18th. In addition, pictures have also been spotted on the Internet that show signs in Best Buys confirming the rumor.

Yes, more choices for TV would be nice and it would help lower the costs. My family has Charter in our house and the costs are very expensive (about $120 a month for high speed internet and hi-def cable). Hopefully, it would also encourage faster internet speeds, as we are still at only 3mbits.

  8. Re:Nice. on Firefox 1.5 Beta 2 Released · · Score: 1

Another way to make extensions work again, apart from modifying the install.rdf files or using the previously mentioned Nightly Tester Tools, is typing about:config into your address bar. Right click on any preference and go to New -> String. Name it "app.extensions.version" and set the value of the string to "1.4+".

This should force Firefox to accept most extensions. One could set it to 1.0+, but there may be incompatibilities. If Firefox refuses to load, add " -safe-mode" to the target box in the shortcut properties or in the run parameters.

To undo this, just make the value of apps.extension.version blank or right click it and click Reset.

  9. Misleading numbers on Mozilla Hits Back at Browser Security Claim · · Score: 5, Informative

Symantec's report is also slanted becasue it uses vendor confirmed vulnerabilities rather than both confirmed and unconfirmed ones. This leads to misleading headlines and hurts Mozilla's reputation. I am suprised that Mozilla didn't say anything about that.

Oh, well that's just a minor fucking nuclear bomb. Doesn't that make the count 28 to 32? For fuck's sake....the 19 vulnerabilities that Microsoft simply hasn't acknowledged just don't count? This new revelation should make it much cheaper to make secure software...after all, I'm sure it takes far fewer man-hours to do nothing then it does to fix something, and according to Symantec, it produces better results, too!

Thank you! It's utter crap to just say that because Microsoft didn't accept them that they don't count. Every company could say that they haven't confirmed it, so it must not be true. A vulnerability is a vulnerability regardless of whether the company has confirmed it themselves or not. Throwing out vulnerabilities then leads to headlines like these and gives the other company a bad reputation.

Disclaimer: I'm not in your situation, nor have I ever been, I'm still in high school. I do believe that these methods could work.

Try to show them visually. People can get confused if they are simply told about something. Also, maybe prepare a persentation and show why the new ways are better than the old, especially showing the benefits.

In fact, one of my teachers had no clue about Firefox. Trying to explain the extensions system among other things didn't seem to help. After showing him visually, he immediately looked into it.

The MPAA and the RIAA are always blaming piracy as the reason no one goes to buy their stuff.

For the RIAA, it is simply that people don't like all of the DRM stuff on their music and want to find other ways to get it.

As for the MPAA, maybe there is just not as many good movies out.
