I wonder how many Slashdotters have donated to the EFF. I did $65 last year and this year bought $80 worth of keychains and hats to hand out this holiday season. I wish geeks would understand the real value that the EFF has brought to the discourse when it comes to our digital freedoms in America. May all Deities bless the EFF.
Question. What is it that your app does that Android does not allow? Are you trying to compare the app store, the only channel in which to get applications on a device that users bought, to conferences and meetings? I fail to see any analogy there. I was under the impression that the app store is a store to sell apps and not a conference hall or meeting place for Apple employees. I thought this was about a technology magazine that reviews technology that competes with apple. What it looks like to me is that a company has a store and refuses to sell anything in it that mentions their competitor's products. They are completely within their right to do that. And I am completely within my right to educate friends and family and everyone I know about those practices. I guess Barnes and Noble can pull all their books on "The rise of Amazon" Maybe even Google can pull all links relating to Apple and Facebook.? Personally, I think it's childish. I think products should be able to compete in the marketplace based on the merits of such products. Not based on the ignorance of customers. Just my 2c.
They didn't create it. The licenesed the camera system from a military company. They were even told to wait for the new system as it's much better than the current cheap system that Microsoft licensed. So no they did not invent this. Just a few minutes of googling would have made this obvious to you. Also Here you can see that this idea is not even original. Dude figured out how to do this ages ago with a Wii-mote
Microsoft claims Linux infringes some 200+ patents. Many are obvious patents that should not have been granted to them in the fist place. They threatened to sue manufacturers for deploying devices that use Linux. here Ballmer whines about Linux users have an "undisclosed balance sheet" Meaning if you use linux you need to pay the Microsoft Tax. They are going around behind the scenes threatening comanies to pay them royalties and patent license fees to sell devices with Linux. The sued Buffalo, TomTom,HTC,Motorola,IO-Data and several Korean companies and many more companies. Many have caved some tried to fight but caved like TomTom. and now they are ruffling feathers in Taiwan. They are in the middle of a spear and scare campaing to scare the timid manufacturers and system builders away form using Open Source and Linux in particular.
You took that out of context. Here is the rest of the sentence. " with Acer and Asustek Computer being targets in an actual attempt to prevent the two vendors from adopting Android and Chrome OS for their netbook and tablet PCs, according to Taiwan-based makers." It says they are trying to prevent adoption of Android and Chrome OS. on NETBOOKS and Tablet PCs.
Now how do you get the ignorant masses from running out and purchasing/licensing DRM infected gear? There is no warning label on such goods that state "WARNING: If you modify this device you may go to prison" Maybe there should be a campaign to educate consumers in such a fashion. Who is going to sponsor it? Maybe EFF? How many people on Slashdot donate to the EFF? I do. Every time the make news I donate again. People can thank the EFF for it now being legal to jailbreak their Iphones. Just a quick google search shows some of the valuable work they have done and you can go here to see a list of that valuable work. I urge every Slashdotter to Join the EFF and help them fight the RIAA/MPAA/BSA juggernauts. Any little bit helps.
They were useful when the government had the same guns as the people. Now? not so much. F16s, and Hornets and Raptors change the game quite a bit. And you are not allowed to own one so good luck.
Oh you mean like Sony, Panasonic, Sharp, Visio, Samsung and every other company that produces a TV pays them to use their content? Hmmm So should Dell, HP, and others pay them to use their content too when you browse to their website? Interesting.
I was a supporter of the Fair Tax before I gave it some thought. First I noticed a pattern. The people who are most passionately for it are the very rich. (millionares and up) Neal Boortz and friends. So that actually made me think some more. The problem with the Fair Tax (consumption only tax) is this. If I make $100 and you make $10 and the tax on a purchase is $1 How much of my income goes towards the tax on that purchase as opposed to how much of your income goes towards the tax on that purchase? See? in this case, only 1% of my income would go towards the tax on that purchase while 10% of your income would go towards the tax on that purchase. So under the Fair Tax the more money you make the less goes towards the tax on a purchase. And this is the part that the purveyors of the Fair Tax does not want you to know. Once i figured this out I realized that they, Boortz and Friends, were squeezing my brain, pulling a fast one on me. So instead of a Flat consumption tax I would support a flat income tax. Therefore everyone is taxed at the same % rate. If its 30% then we all pay 30% of our income. if its 17% then we all pay 17% of our income.
I am a former Sony reseller and former Sony fanboy. Lived the Sony Style life etc. We have installed and recommended tens of millions of dollars worth of Sony equipment (pro and consumer) over the decades from the 80s-late90s. Sony at one time used to be an electronics company and therefor was more on the side of the electronics consumer rather than the content creators who want control over all electronics. They fought a battle with the MPAA/RIAA back in the 80s for the right of the consumer to record video with the VCR. They battled all the way to the supreme court and won. It all went south when Sony became a content company. When that happened, Sony's Draconian side reared its ugly head. They became major members of the US lobby groups RIAA/MPAA and their attitude towards the consumer changed from pro-consumer to anti-consumer. I got off the Sony bandwagon around this time and we eventually moved away from recommending their products. Then came the rootkit fiasco and the constant lobbying and lying to congress and the constant corruption. Their relentless pursuit to proprietize the electronics industry and control the media format industry has never changed. From the early days of the Betamax to the Minidisc arguably better formats at the time? to the memory stick and other failed ventures. Sony has now become one of the most Draconian companies on the planet and I cannot consider giving them one more penny or recommending Sony to anyone ever again.
The real reason many of the big sites block other countries is because of advertising dollars. Its the easiest way to control what ads get shown where. If their clients did not pay them to show their ads in Eastern Europe then they view it as advertising for free and so they block those countries that they are not getting paid advertising dollars for. Its all about the money. Just follow the money.
Yes see here And they are the largest manufacturer in their segment in the world. They got rid of ALL Microsoft products from their organization. And they mention huge savings also. Check it out.
Dell Streak. You can root it easily. no stupid hardware locks. No need to tether to Itunes. Not locked to windows or mac. can use either or linux to sync. I don't know what the fuss is about. There Driod-X and HTC are not the only Andriod phones out there. BTW how do you setup and Iphone as an access point after jailbreaking it? I have one here that I Jalbroke. iPhone4 but cannot seem to find any way to make it act as an access point like I can easily with Android 2.2.
I was talking about the *hardware*. The process of rooting it is dead easy. I haven't bothered to because I can access 3rd party apps, switch carrier, install apps that compete with the vendor (duplicate functionality according to Apple) etc. And i believe (not sure) that u can even install 3rd party O/S without having to root the current one it comes with. Basically to date Dell devices are the most unrestricted Android phones I have seen. That may change in the future but for now I haven't seen any other Android phones that is so free. I think Dell is on the right track here. And I am not a Dell fan. But this phone is totally sick.
**Update. apparently HTC has responded and they actually call this phenomenon a ROOT KIT. "We are not aware of any rootkit installed on the HTC G2" According to them So we'll have to hear from Tmobile about this "rootkit".
er' My Samsung TV detects my MythTV box on the network. It shows up as one of the inputs. All my recordings and music shows up in the media menu on the TV. I was blown away because I had no Idea that it would detect my MythTV box on the network and just show up in the TV menu like that. Let alone work with MythTV over the network without having to lift a finger.
Dell does not restrict anything. I just got a Dell streak and am amazed. No hardware restrictions what so ever. So it just depends on the hardware vendor you chose. Apple, Motorola, and now HTC restrict the hardware. Nokia, Dell, Samsung, among many others are still unrestricted hardware.
in many cases when you root your phone and then it gets updated your phone still remains rooted. Jailbreaking is not the same thing.
Also Jailbreaking allows you to install apps from outside the jail of the Apple app store. so are not stuck to one vendor for all your apps. And it allows
installing competing apps that the Vendor/Jailkeeper does not allow. From the Android market one can install alternatives to the music player, browser, etc You do not have to root an android phone to do this.
My Dell Streak has an option "unknown sources" under Application Settings and the comments for that option state "Install non-Market applications." and my phone is not rooted.
Neither did it come with AT&T crapware installed on it. I suppose getting the phone directly from Dell helped in this regard. Also no need to root the Streak if I want to switch from AT&T to T-Mobile. All I have to do is call Dell and have them activate the phone on any other carrier that the phone will work with after swapping the sim card. Another reason to Jailbreak is so that one can sync with software other than Itunes easier. No need to root my phone to do this either.
I just got a current generation Dell streak. Love it. It came directly from dell without any AT&T crapware installed and is dead easy to root. Custom firmware
can be installed also.
My point exactly. When politicians seek power to take away our freedom, people like you would willfully vote that right away. Just like you freely voted your right away to purchase apps from other appstores on your phone from any *vendor* other than Apple. Willful submission.
I could see people like you running out to buy a car because the Manufacturer is controlling the experience. Or supporting more government intrusions in our lives because you approve of how they they are "controlling your life experience" Its incredible how people are willing to throw their freedom down the tubes just for a little convenience.
You need to be directing you anger at the fucking Republicans. They are the ones who want to SHUTDOWN the fucking government. They are the ones who REFUSE to cooperate. The Democrats CANNOT do it without the Republicans and they are opposing it. Give me a fucking break already OK.
Are you kidding me? Heritage dot org. Give us a break. You might have well have quoted directly from Fox News Channel. They get a lot of their talking points from Heritage foundation anyways so I guess why not go strait to the source of a lot of right-wing propoganda. The same Heritage foundation that claimed the Bush Tax Cuts for the filthy rich would help the economy. How's that working out for you? eh? Here's a clue. The Economy crashed under your guy. Yep George Bush and right up until it chrashed the mantra form the Heritage Foundation was "The economy was fundamentally strong" Even your other guy John McCain picked up on that and hence his campain tanked right as the economy crashed. So please don't point to any "so called facts" from the Heritage Foundation. I have been burned by them before. Fool me once shame on me. Fool me twice ... . .
Get a clue Heritage Foundation is to the Republicans what George Soros is to the Dems. No rational person is going to take any of them seriously.

Friend of mine got a Samsung Moment from Wallmart $49 thru sprint. Yeah its subsidized but $49 is a seriously tempting starter price.
