It's interesting that "legitimate" software thinks it can act like spyware and the community won't notice. I am with you, I will not install software that doesn't give me control over what is and where it is installed. Especially when there is no notice or ability to disable certain unwanted "features".
I've got a Utilities, Internet Utilities, Multimedia, Hardware, and a Games tree on my Start menu for a reason.
You don't have to pay sales tax in your state on goods purchased in another state.
This is not true in Kentucky, if I'm reading the statement correctly on my tax form. It states simply, declare the total amount of all Internet purchases made for the year 20xx.
If a resident of Kentucky, for example, purchases such a tent over the Internet, Maine-based L.L.Bean does not collect any sales tax, either for Maine or for Kentucky. Instead, the customer is required to report all out-of-state purchases on his state income tax form and submit the requisite 6 percent use tax.
Here's another link that shows a map of states that attempt to collect taxes on online purchases, including non-physical items, such as digital media.
Really, what is wrong with this statement if in 2105, the car is worth some amount more than its original value (adjusted for inflation) due to its pristine condition and historical value? Heck, you don't even have to go back 100 years to find cars where the value has increased because of its nostalgic or rarity value. Now, if it was a Ford Focus or some other run of the mill piece of crap Ford (or Chevy, GM, Toyota, Honda, take your pick), then I would agree with your statement.
True, but in CS:Source, you aren't playing for medals and loads of cash from endorsements. When you are (Professional Gaming League, etc.) they take strong and effective measures to prevent cheating.
Actually, they care very much about what other people think.... Oh, think about their disregard for the rules.
On my point, the reason they are cheating, lying about events, etc, is because they want to look good and better than everyone so much that they will lie and cheat to meet those ends. Russia did it, many countries do this. The difference is that when cheating is found to have occurred in a Western type nation, the nation will rightly strip the individual cheater of their earnings. This brings up another tin-foil hat type of worry... what if the western type nation secretly promoted the cheater, but then, when caught, doesn't back up the cheater...

And for the love of Pete (whomever he may be) be consistent. If your program archives your log, make sure to use a consistent naming convention, and one that makes sense, throughout all the log files.
Make sure you date/time stamps are consistent. If you are going to AM/PM designations, do this for all logs. 24-hour timestamp, all logs! Using an mm-dd-yyyy, mm-dd-yy, or yyyy-mm-dd style of date stamping, use one and don't vary.
Being a young whippersnapper in the field, I wasn't sure if I should have written up a bug report on the issue. But once I started log browsing the files I realized how bad of a shape they were in (some log files even use multiple date-time stamping formats from line to line). YES, this was worthy of a ticket in the bug-tracking system (actually, several of them for each component).
For most open source licenses, distribution of the binaries is trivial:
make sure this notice goes with the binaries
make sure this notice goes with the source files
make sure the sources follow the binaries
If you distribute my file, don't modify the source, remove files, remove this notice
Don't charge for distribution
Charge for cost of distribution only
If you modify the source, keep it open to everyone else
If you modify the source, don't distribute the modifications
etc...

I think you missed my point and what I did there. I used the same technique as the parent to change a few words here and there from a section of the topic and made it match the theme of my message. The theme being that, to an outsider looking in, isn't it curious that a developer with a steady income goes to another, startup/indie company with not as steady income. This is the same as an outsider/fan looking at a person like SLJ and wondering why he took a role in a movie like SnakesOAP.
Yes, I know the games industry sucks, especially in a big name company like EA where they're as likely to fire you right before release so the big guys get a bigger chunk of the prophets and you'll be lucky if your name ends up on the list of 100s at the end of the game. That's why I haven't jumped to that industry too quickly.
Interesting and respectable response. I, myself, will eventually fly solo and have done so in the past to put myself through school. However, I like not having to worry about the doldrums of business ownership at this time period of my life... so I work for someone else. I still hang on to my college business, but I take no new customers and limit my time doing the work for that side. It does generate a nice stash of income for play things.
I think the interest is along the same lines of:
Why Actors Go Indie Films
How could anybody abandon the multi-million dollar paychecks, access to the best directors and writers, large teams of skilled colleagues and the glory of working on one of next holiday season's blockbusters for a chance to labor in relative obscurity on tiny, niche titles?
An example would be Samuel L Jackson in Snakes On A Plane. (Because there are *** snakes on *** planes.)
This might sound completely insane but did anyone consider that Microsoft might try and cut costs by using Apache for the backend in Windows Server 2010?
I first read this to mean they would save costs by not having to purchase Microsoft software. hehe.
Darn shame (for them) about Download Helper, Media Pirate, Flash Video Resource Downloader, Fast Video Download, or Download Embedded, eh? (Take your pick.)
You actually make a good point. They probably charge more in [not the USA] countries because there may be a bigger propensity for piracy. I have no numbers, nor a desire to look, but this *might* be a possible reason.
Another possible reason is because import taxes are very high. The software may actually cost $299 to the German, but with the added customs, imports, and sales taxes, plus any mark-up from the seller, the out-of-pocket spent may be around $500 or more.
All of this is actually of benefit to those of us who like our FLOSS. There are some really good open source and/or free software coming out of Europe. Plus, I suspect, any serious study of encryption should be done outside of the US so that the stuff can actually be used anywhere/everywhere.
Oh, goodness... flamebait? Really? My point is that there are a lot of people, as some might say "sheeple", who flock to opening weekend movies like they just need to be part of the masses. This jacks up the popularity of a movie unnecessarily... which is the point of some of the posts here.
Granted, I probably should have been more verbose and stated: "Unless you really, really want to see the movie and you're not doing it because I have this dire need to be a part of the masses but because the movie interested you."
I usually wait to see what happens the second or third weekend. I guess you can tell that I don't buy the latest & greatest, I didn't hop the iPod, iPhone, iwhatever bandwagon, I've never watched Titanic all the way through, and I'll not likely see this latest Batman (I don't like getting into the mind of the psychotically and murderously deranged.)
That's funny, I would usually pick the movies that the critics scoffed at. They and I have most generally been at odds as to what a good movie is supposed to be. (That and I don't watch R-Rated movies, not many PG-13 anymore these days.)
And that, affordability, is exactly the problem. I would LOVE to use solar cells to power my house. I will use it as soon as I can afford it. I will be green just as soon as it is economically viable to do so.
It's interesting that "legitimate" software thinks it can act like spyware and the community won't notice. So, can we now say, in the vein of "Hollywood is out of ideas", that the games industry is out of ideas?
Okay, so if we weighted the numbers and totaled it up, here is what we get:

Something about an errant bomb, a Chinese embassy, and during the wag-the-dog 90's era, seems to put a chill in me. Thank you for reminding me :-/
Russia would just send the traffic through a Chinese server to hit the US. I mean, everyone else does, right?
